was driving along and suddenly a buring smell from the engine bay started , the battery light came on and the steering as now gone really hard (like the power steering has gone), it seems to come back on and then go off again.
Does this mean i need a new PAS pump, ive looked and they seem quite pricey (is there anywhere i can get a cheap one from)

alrite fella,
i have had problems with my power steering pump before and have had it replaced....
such a common fault with the saxo, exactly what happened to mine, made the battert light flicker and the cluster lights pulsate
i think its definately your pump burnt out
also to prevent any further damage, remove the relay from the power steering
its grey and rated 45amps
get a replacement pump from the breakers, best bet
if you need anymore help, feel free to PM me

Had this problem myself, in the end took it to a garage, and they said my alternator was knackered, and that the ignition switch on the back of the ignition barrell was breaking down, i.e the the circuit was knackered. Got it back today and it seems alrite, touch wood. I experienced the same burning smell problem too, and as it happens it wasn't the power steering pump going as i first thought. Hope this helps
