I have a 99vts and my alternator is squeeking and grinding and is not good. Can I fit a vtr alternator to a vts, some people have said yes and others have said no. Also does it matter what mk it is? Cheers for the help.
Mike Cracknell got a new pc today so thanks for the offer but I'm up and running again!!!

I gave my details to halfords and a car garage near me and they said it was £160 and I do not want to pay that as I cannot afford it. There are 2nd hand ones on ebay but are for a vtr which is the only prob.

When I ordered the one before last, the price of a Mk1 VTS alternator was £100 and the Mk2 one was £170 *eeek* Yes... I paid the £170 and a year(ish) down the line, it needed replacing but that god that was done under warranty.
But as Paul said... the only way to have an exact replacement is to take the number on your current one and give that to a car parts garage. They can't do it with the make, model and year as I found out.
The second hand ones are refurbished ones. You would think they wouldn't last as long as a new one but it's pure luck. I had a new one that went wrong. I now have another new one. Will wait for that one to go now.
