check the oil level, i thought it was the gearbox shaft at first, topped the box up wit more oil and the noise went....
could be the shaft bearing, depending on how much wear/miles the gearbox has had

Isnt that the same as a 'thrust' bearing or is that something different?
I had the same proble when I first got my S, so instead of just replacing the bearing it made more sense to replace the clutch while it was all apart.

When you say "whines"... what do you mean exactly? on my car... i have a slight rattle sound in neutral as if two peices of metal or plastic are touching... when i put the clutch down it stops...? do i have an issue or just a loose screw? (yes loose screw, not a screw loose :p)

It cant be gearbox if its going on and off when i push the clutch and release...
how long do they normally last before braking? will it damage the car by leaving it a little longeR?

its the release bearing
theres no set time on when it goes or not
depends on what make the clutch is how hard you drive it
also id get it looked at before the beraing shatters as it will damage your box meaning more cost

Mine has made a sort of grinding noise for a long time now, dip the clutch and it goes away. I was told it was something to do with the shaft in the gearbox.
Still havnt got round to having it fixed though. Mine was caused by low gearbox oil. When im stationary though i keep the clutch down, perhaps why its lasted so long :)

i just got my vts .... was fine when the bloke took us out in it.. naturally.. gave it a thrashin n the noise happenin... i was always under impression a noise like this was release bearing... got a mate who is citreon mechanic am gonna get him to have a look.. will post if i get a reply from him !!
said i would never buy a red car or a french car ...
.... i bought a red VTS .lol ! it better not riddle me with problems !
my saxo did that i thaught it was the thust bearing so replaced it and a new clutch and it was the same turned out 2 b the gearbox shaft bearings and was told its cheaper 2 get a new box than 2 recon the old one.

i was told it was the release bearing on mine too, ended up needing the gearbox stripped down, turned out i needed the whole diff changing. can also lead to lots of snapped drive shafts eventually, i left mine and ended up going through 5 shafts before i had the gearbox stripped down, ended up costing me nearly £900 to get it sorted.

Sounds like your release bearing pal.
You could just replace the bearing but I don't recommend it as usually means your cltuch is soon to go and will cost you twice as much to repalce both separately.
Get it down to a garage and let them have a good look. If this is the case, get the clutch changed pal.
Isn't going to be cheap unless you've got some friendly mechanics. Usually about £200 mark.
Get it done sooner rather than later though if you can :y:
