View Full Version : Noisy Rocker-Cover-Oil-Baffle-Plate?

Moved to Canterbury, which is nice in a quaint sort of way...
VTR developed a vibration/noise/howl/buzz at certain revs (~3100), been happening for a while and got worse. Tracked it down (I think) to the baffle between the rocker cover and the valves. Took the cover off to have a look (and replace the knacked rubber seal there) and there's wear marks along the edges of the plate.... Stitched it all back together and tightened the top pair of bolts back, still doing it!
Got skanked a new Cat already as the garage said it was that making the noise! Any pointers?! Is this likely the real problem or me mis-diagnosing?

Aye,
Sorry about the vague description "plate that oil spills onto" would cover it!
It's in the garage this Friday.
Pretty sure that's the problem, I could see marks where it has been rubbing on the rocker cover. Think maybe it's warped or the posts that hold it down aren't long enough. I tried flipping it over when I took it out and it sure aint going on the other way.
Will keep yous informed.

yeah the plate only goes on one way mate :y:
it goes on in this order
plate - spacers - rocker cover - nuts :y:

Garage had a look and after some head-scratching took the belt off the Alternator, stupid noise went away! So I'm looking at a new Alternator and Belt... Whats the pain for replaceing that ? Think it should be relatively easy to do DIY, any pointers?

alternators are expensive think around £150
easy to replace yourself though

Been looking.
It's a Lucas unit I think, part number A257, 80A rating.
Found one at Partco in Canterbury for £130 (with exchange of old one).
It's only a 2 bolt fix and the tensioner looks easy enough.
Thanks
