Hi All,

I'm in the progress of deciding which to buy a Porter Cable 7424 or a Makita 9227CB Sander / Polisher 240V, out of which is better? whats the difference as i can get the 9227CB cheaper than the Porter Cable. Does it do the same job?

Cheers
Adam

the porter cable is an orbital polisher and mimmicks hand movement so risk of paint damage is very minimal and is the choice of most enthusiasts.

the makita is a rotary and can easily burn through paint if not careful and is used amongst a lot of pro's who take their job seriousley.

IMO i would go for the PC as the results are still extremely impressive, the makits will take some skill to get used to.

both do same job makita will be quicker

if you havent used 1 before or been shown how to use 1 id stay away
you can do more damage then good when using 1

id start with pc as you cant really do any damage

get a PC. you will not regret it and if you are still learning the ropes you will not be able to knacker your paint work up beyond repair with a PC, with a rotary like the makita, you can do some serious damage if you don't really know what you are doing.

Unless you have a car to "Practice" on I would start out with the PC7424.
If your real stuck on getting a rotary then keep the speed low like NO higher then 1-2(on speed dial) and use a finishing pad and NEVER a wool pad.
The wool pad is used for compounding.
Oh one more tip, stay away from edges like door opening, wheel wells etc. The paint tends to be a tad thin there and is easier to burn through.
On the other hand you can safely use the PC7424 with NO worries.

I would also go for the pc 7424, then if you still feel the need for a rotary, go for one at a later date.

If i were you id get the PC,

The makita is more of a harsh polisher, used more for cutting than polishing. In my experiance using a polisher with a rotary action tends to leave a lot of marks which you then need to hand polish out.

Ohh and if you do buy the makita ddont get a cheap import off of ebay because Makita UK will not repair the tool under warranty when/if it goes wrong.
