hi,
I currently have standard 155/70 13'' on my saxo, what does this stand for? And what size tyre would i need to go with 17'' wheels, without flaring my arches?

your tyre, 155 x 70 x 13''
Basically means your tyre is 155 mm in width, so it's 15.5cm, the tyre wall which is 70mm (7cm) is the area of the wall you see in height from your wheel trim up wards.
and last but very not least 13" the diameter of the wheels your car is currently sitting on.
Don't put 17" wheels on a 1.1i - it will slow your car down considerably. Try 15" wheels and lower.
Anything else just ask.

Hi Wovo,
155/70R13 can be broken down as follows...
155 is the width (where the tread is) in mm.
70 is the aspect ratio (or tyre profile). The aspect ratio is expressed as a percentage (%) of the tyre width (so 70% of 155mm is 109mm).
R means radial construction.
13 is the rim/wheel diameter in inches.
Having bigger wheels on your car means your engine needs to work harder to maintain the same acceleration.
Higher profile tyres tend to give a smoother ride, but the tyre wall can flex under high load, which causes loss of grip, instability, and overheating. Conversely, very low profile tyres typically provide a hard ride, but with much less tyre flex.
