My cars fooked. Timing Belt snapped on tues night after a short drive. Now after taking it to a garage and removing the head, I found out that all 16valves bounced.:n:
Can anyone give me any advice on wats the best plan of action to get my wheel back on the road?
I know its goin to cost me a piss load of money to get fixed but am i better lookin for a second hand engine or head to save me a bit of cash??
Any ideas any1

depends if you have any damage to the head ... is the block and pistons ok
valves are really easy to replace ... get the head preasure tested for cracks and go from there
few people on here from glasgow ... sure they would help ya out

would be cheapercto buy a complete used head rather then get urs tested and valves replaced, i seen them sell for £80 on ebay with valves and cams so u could jsut bolt it on and away u go as long as the bottom end is ok. i had a vts head for sale a few weeks ago but decided to keep it coz people were saying £80 for a complete vts head was 2 much

no sorry mate i decided to keep it for spares for my own car. it might be worth u buying a vts engiene then as £600 is alot adn if u only want the engine u can get vts engines for £350 without the gearbox, loom ecu etc...

Allright folks....need some advice. after all the problems with my car i now have the bill. £700!!! Thats for 16 new valves, 4 new valve guides, New timing belt back cover, new timing belt, 1 timing belt idler gear and head gasket set(which was mine) plus labour charges. Now the gypsie cunt cant give me any reciepts for any of the new parts for my SH but he's only goin to give me a reciept for the whole job. The stupid prick went and did the work without even telling me a price. I dont think this is fair. How do i no he hasnt just got a 2nd hand head from a scrappies and cleaned it up and threw it on my car. Should I have to pay him if he cant provide me with any of the reciepts for the parts? Please Help!!!
Cheers

no you don't have to pay him if he didn't give you a quote beforehand and did the work without you authorising it, or if he won't give you receipts for the parts. mention trading standards.

This is always a contentious issue. A few questions for you:
1) Did you receive a written quote or an estimate before allowing the work to be undertaken?
2) Have you asked if OEM or equivalent parts have been used?
I would ask for documentary evidence that new parts were used, and cost. If the garage is not obliging then, basically, you have 2 courses of action:
a) You can ask for the work to be undone: i.e the garage to put the car back into the condition it was prior to them commencing work - they can refuse. If improvements have been made, the garage is entitled to exercise a lien over the car. This is a legal right to hold disputed goods until payment is made, in which case:
b) You can 'pay under protest' (i would advise that you do so with a credit card - the credit card company are then jointly liable). On the back of the credit card slip AND receipts mark: 'PAID UNDER PROTEST' - date and sign. The garage may be a member of a trade association with a conciliation, mediation or arbitration service which can help sort our your complaint. You may have to pay for using an arbitration service, but conciliation is usually free. Discuss the service offered with the trade association before committing yourself. You could also, as a last resort, take action in the County Court.
Before exercising either a) or b) it is best to speak to the garage owner. If you do decide to take further action make sure you do so by durable medium (i.e. letter or email).
Good luck...

Not actually true - the garage doesn't have to give a quote before hand to expect payment. It could easily be argued that by leaving the car, that authorisation is given.

To be honest mate £700 is a good price for all that work. I paid over £300 two years ago just for a head gasket change on my VTS. Ask to see the old bits if you are worried he has just slapped a second hand head on. Is it all running nicely now?

Fluctuating revs are a common fault, try a forum search. Mine does it sometimes. I think the idle control valve is the most common diagnosis, maybe try cleaning it. Haven't tried anything on mine yet.
