just got lowerd and it 5mm lower on one side than the other on the rear you carnt tell on the pic but when i measure both sides from the floor to bottom of bumper passenger side is 5mm higher than the driver side does this matter or is it just the dampers setteling or has the torsion bar been lowerd wrong plz shed some light on this for me as its the first time lowering.

sounds like its been lowered the wrong way as its only rough when lowered by splines

he said something about taking the torsion bar out to lower it coz he was going to put the wheel back on once the arm is free and push the wheel up into the arch to see if it would catch if so he would cut the arches. so is this the wrong way by removing the torsion bar??

Done it by splines i reckon

yes think this is what he done. he said something about the torsion bar being siezed he had to leave it overnight soaked in wd40

no lowering it by removeing the torsin bars is the correct method but it sounds like he either lied and did it the splines way or he may have doen it the correct way but may have miss measured the points or he may have raised the arm slightly higer then realised. did he measure the standard setup before he removed the torsion bars? and measure it after?

also this sound like a stupid question but are u on completely falt ground? as it might be 5mm out coz ur not on a true surface

yes my driveway has just been tarmaked so its prity much flat i shall measure it again on a diffrent surface tomorrow. the ride is fine like its not shaking or anything

i doubt there will be one as no one in there right mind that knows what they are doing will lower it using that method, it involves knocking the whole rear arm off and then turning it at jsut one end a few splines and then forcing the arm back on on the other end. its a cowboy way of doign the job and will not give an accurate level each side. also doign it that way also normally causes the bearings to fail not long after as it normally damages the seals

i dont think he would lie if so why??? also he had the car 3 days because the torsion bar was seized, im not sure if he measured b4 and after i shall ask him nex time i am down.

why would anyone lie? because they dont want u to know they done a bodge job. i am not saying he has lied or done a bodge job i am just saying it may be a possibility. like i say he may have done it the correct way but may have miss measured the points or he may have raised the arm slightly higer then realised as just one slight movement on the jack arm while doign it can make it go completely out

lets just hope that he has not done it this way then i think i better ring him tomorow and find out which way he done it. cost me 250 pound so if he has done it the wrong way i shall be demanding money back...

so lets say he done it the correct way but nocked the jack so now i am 5mm lower at one side is it nessary to fix it asap or will it be ok?

Put car on axle stands. Take both wheels off then measure the points on both sides. Will be easier that way and more accurate

take it back, or one of your shocks could be fucked? read it a while back......

chrismurra

i am going to measure it again to see i doubt the shock is fucked as it is bran new. so lets say if it is 5mm lower due to not measured propely do i need to fix it ASAP or will it be fine, as the ride is ok it drives and handels well

there not the same measurements each side when the car is jacked up as the passenger side torsion bar is positioned higer up so u wont have the same measurements each side which is why u measure each side indipendantly and then take the desired amount off each e.g if u meaure the right to be 25.8mm and left 25.1mm then u take e.g if lowering 40mm u take 45mm (the extra 5mm is for the arm slack taken from the jack) off the measurements so u wouls raise the arms to: right 21.3mm and the left 20.6mm. also when u lower a car u adjsut the torsion bars and then put the wheels on before u put any of the other bits back on so u can check its level and adjustaccordingly if not.

if its a small 5mm then u will probably be ok, u prob cant even notice it by the eye with out a tape measure but if its a big 5mm then u might wana sort it, but sayign that if it corners ok and it dont feel like its unstable then u might just wana leave it but the correct way would to have a completely level car.

chears mate you are right i can not notice by eye, only reason i measured it because it is rubbing on one side with passengers in and not on the other so i measured eather side from the floor to bottom of the bumper and one side is higher than the other i am going to measure it again at work on a diffrent surface i shal let you know the exsact measurment later on tonight.

easiest way to measure it is from the centre of the hub to the top of the arch when on axel stands.

Just out of interest, if a car is lowered by splines, would the person take the torsion bar out or does it just get turned? Reason I'm asking is because the guy that I'm maybe going to get to do mine said they bring the torsion bar out and then lower it the same amount as the front... he was a bit vague about how it's done though.

Its a shame that the difference isnt slightly lower on the passenger side instead of the other way round. Because then when you're actually in the car it would probably be level as the drivers side is dropped down more by your weight.

they jsut take the torsion bar out of one end with the rear arm still attched to the other then twist the arm and force it back on, the correct way involves removeing the torsion bar from both locating holes/splines so the torsion bar comes off indipendantly on its own

just measured up propely and its only 3mm lower so i guess i should be ok what do you think

i wouldnt worry about 3mm tbh mate

cant see that havin any dramatic effect

chrismurra
22nd March 2007, 12:43
it could be my sub weighing it down coz ma sub is on the driver side lol

woodsy
22nd March 2007, 12:45
na doubt a sub would do that ...hard enough to push it down with your hands lol

stevenet15
22nd March 2007, 12:46
yeah 3mm will be fine mate, like u say its probably ur sub when i had 2 rockfordfosgate 15" hxw subs with 2" magnets on it it made my rear sit loads lower as is weighed shit loads, felt like i was driving with 3 people in the car when i was driving on my own coz of the weight
