starter motor noises, and wont turn the engine, starter not engaging??

Just fitted my 4th gearbox...lol put it all back together - went to start it and it sounds like the starter is spinning, possibly grinding a little... Its not starting/turning over the engine, is it not engaging?

Its not the battery - Thats fully charged..
Its not clicking like it would if the batt was flat

Its just and on spinning/grindy noise..

I have checked earths etc on the gearbox and they appear fine, Ive take the starter out and put it back in 3 times so far..and still no joy :panic:

i had this and the starter was busted, had to go buy a new one :n:

Gash, guessing its the solenoid on top which is built in not chucking the cog across to engage onto the fly wheel :(

So new starter...bugger :(

i hit mine with a hammer, hit it on a wall, through it accross the garage and it still didnt release. If u have some, drip some new brake fluid on the shaft. this may free it up

all the conections to starter ok

take starter off. then rig urself a test up get a live and earth from ur battery attach them to the correct points on starter then put a live to the other terminal and see if the gear's coming. make sure u secure the started in something first they come out with some force

Thanks everyone - I got a second hand starter from a mate which isnt very old, took the old one off and put the new one on, but i did exactly the same thing, but turned the key again and it worked although then the battery went flat..
So charged it and tried it again today, sometimes it engages and turns the engine over other times it doesnt and just makes the grinding/air gun noise..

I think the starter is working and the solenoid is chucking the cog across but its just not getting into the teeth on the flywheel??

Any ideas...as its just getting gay :(:(

think there is only one earth isnt there? As in the one on the gearbox?

1 to chassis

after that id be maybe thinking problem with flywheel

Im thinking flywheel too, but it was fine before i changed the gearbox...

Will check the earths again..
starter will be fine as just done it, i dont know where the chassis earth is though, i know where the gbox one is..
IS there any way i can turn the flywheel?

put it in gear with the ignition off and rock it, might be easier with the plugs out and it should turn over

follow the earths from battery will goto the earths

by turning the engine over will move the flywheel
