brianS

if it wasnt as described then i would make him sing for his money.

if you only need a shell why not just buy a dirt cheap standard one and start from scratch rather than taking on an unfinished project

djrem

Had a house call from the bodyshop man.

Basically heres the to-do list:

-Fiberglass and smooth in roof seals.
-delock and smooth
-Remove indicators and smooth over
-debadge and extend bonnet to front bumper
-smooth in all arches and sideskirts
-prep n prime car for paint
-respray all out side and inside except engine bay.
-fit front springs and lower torsion bar once interior has been refitted.

£1600 for the lot

thought that was good considering the labour involved,

the prep work on my car is pretty imense though.
i mean hes re smoothing the entire kit
arch liners.
all the welding in the locks, and bonnet.
All glass removed and refitted after painting
etc.

Also the guy im using is very well recommended.

Ive learnt from the past that if you pay for it on the cheap, you get it on the cheap.

Anyway, quick update
got some photoshops done.

Asked around about exhaust for when the motor comes out of the body shop
(original thread: http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1250248#post1250248)

so had these two that i liked:

carbon sideways can:
http://www.saxperience.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=5256&stc=1&d=118225742 2

Twin exit:
http://www.saxperience.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=5257&stc=1&d=118225753 2

Really liking the carbon can sideways.
So got a photoshop of the car in its new colour:

well i want to make a car that stands out but for all the right reasons.
hopefully but toneing it all down with a darker paint job it wont be an eye sore making you want to know whats on the inside.

Mirriors ordered.
M3 with indicators

Genuine GTi 106 Spoiler on its way in the post to me.

----- UPDATE -----

Trying to keep with the whole "show car with out all the chav shit" look.
Im going to be ordering on next months wages a pc computer which im going to customise to run RoadRunner front end.

This will be controlled via a 7" touchscreen recessed into the front panel blocking off the heaters.

The PC will out put both VGA (to the touchscreen) and composite (to the other 4 screens in the car)

The only problem i have at the moment is do i go for a little pc system and put it in the glove box. or build one from pc parts and slap it in the boot?

HID Angel Projector black headlights will also be fitted once the motors back from the body shop.

Will keep you all updated :)

If you ever need an extra pair of hands DJ then pm and Id gladly lend a hand :y:

Mirrors arent to bad seen worse!

Exhaust look spot on as long as you keep them around the 3' mark then I think the twin Cilo 182 look exhaust will work, 4' will be far too big.

I think the choice of can will really make or break the look of the back mate, Jap cans or more of a Classic back box style is gona be a hard one to call.

Think a 3' outwardly rolled box each side of the opening will really work, Jap cans maybe too flashy imo.

If your planing to have the exhaust done proffesional there is a place just out side Basildon/Billericay 4extreme performance who are very good, noticed Saxmanaic had 4extreme performance stickers on his car so Im sure you now they can do a nice job.

Think Id sourch the boxes myself tho still to try and keep costs down :y:

djrem
27th June 2007, 11:14
the exhaust im looking at fitting will be this style Al:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p305/Predator_VTR/conehead-3.jpg

The mirriors will be colour coded in aswell.

You any experience changing Driveshafts or removing/fitting rear beams buddy?

hating those mirrors tbh.

you did say you wouldnt show that 'remus' sign didnt you?

it wont be a REMus exhaust.

That was more of a concept photoshop.

Well i need the mirriors for the MOT as the car has been fully smoothed off.

The only other mirriors with indicators on the 106/saxo base plate were shitty DTM ones
http://i5.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/a6/7e/2520_1.JPG

or these chrome shitters:
http://i2.ebayimg.com/02/i/000/a6/7e/697f_1.JPG

or could have gone for the £14.99 stick on crap:
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g229/demontuning/flashing01.gif

Im toying with the idea of smoking the m3 indicators though so they are more stealth:

progress looks cool,
with Robb though,
mirrors are awful.

djrem
28th June 2007, 09:09
they arrived today, so will be getting them ready to throw in the car to be done with the respray

Smoking the lights could be a bit more difficult than i thought, may laquer them with a slight smidge of paint then get the rest of the unit resprayed.

Car PC software is all up and running now.

Just got to sit down and make all the front end graphics for it.

Heres a demo of some of the pre-made ones for it:

I need some with indicators because of having the car completely smoothed off.
Plus i dont think its as custom to simply make a different peugeot mirror fit a lower spec model in the range.

106 gti mirrors i think mate...not into m3 mirrors at alll

Erm 106 gti mirriors?
Im not into up badging cars or making higher spec replicas.
Too many people are just making 1.1 GTi's or Flat arched saxos with VT Kits.
What i want is a car that has had work to make it look unique not into a car i couldnt afford when i first purchased it.

If they want a GTi or a VTR then get one instead of slowly building one.

Im all for different and want to make a car thats not loud and in your face but is unique.

Im an innovator not an imitator.

Got up hungover and needing water.
managed to blag an engine hoist from work
(why we have one i dont know)

Decided to rip the 1.1 lump out ready for the paintshop so when the GTi beastie goes in, it'll have a lovely matching paintwork surrounding it.

so anyway, heres the porn:

Just basically undid everything then hoited the car up and over the engine.

Upon pulling the little hair dryer engine out,
We found that the previous own had only bolted in some of the wishbones.
Also that the passenger CV Gaiter was duct tape and a cable tie. Nice :S

Couldnt find any lexus lights to finish it off but you get the idea:

Great progress tho

The shell of the 106/saxo is as cost saving as possible.

Theres even holes in the back where the split seats from a GTi would bolt to left there because its cheaper to run loads of generic shells of than model specific ones.

Therefore yes, the 16 valve 1.6 will fit in any lower spec model of the same age :)

Everything is smoothed
Car is now fully primed

Gun Metal all the way :)

Well im on holiday for two weeks of the next 6 so getting it finished and on the road looks like early to mid september.

Having to dip into my saving in order to get the mechanical stuff finished at a realistic time now.
Should be worth it.
Once its mechanically sound, i can MOT it and get it on the road.

Im not the worlds finest mechanic so im having to rely heavily on advice and help from mechanical friends. I've put so much time into this car now, that i dont want it bodge but done to the highest standard possible.

So the main mods holding me back at are:
VTS CONVERSION
GTI FRONT STRUTS
COILOVER SUSPENSION & TORSION UPRATED
VTS/GTI REAR BEAM

Just reading your thread and seen your touchscreen, was just wondering where you got the screen and pc/software from looks wicked. Has it got GPS? Progress is excellent mate, well done!
Matt

The touchscreen is by a company called lilliput.
easy to find them on eBay :)

mines 8". any larger and you wont fit it into your dash if you go custom.

It does come it a stand if you dont fancy hacking your dash to bits.

RoadRunner is very good open source and free front end software.
Combined with other software you can load the bits of windows you want and then jump straight into your front end software.
30- 40 seconds boot up instead of minutes with normal windows.

The frontend is fully skinable meaning you can put anything you want in it and make it look like anything too.

GPS, Bluetooth, FM, DVD, DAB are all possible. All you need are either them built into your carputers box or buy the USB pendrive equivilants to interface with the hardware.

Hope that answers your question :)

Carputer can easily be a laptop with a special realy switch to turn it on when you turn the key in the ignition
Roadrunner is available from here:
http://www.kompassist.co.uk/

Good resource for CarPCs in general:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/software-software-development/

RoadRunner specific forum:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/road-runner/

You have to bare in mind that a carputer isnt a cd player you take out the box, fit and it works. It is fully customisable. Which also means its fully breakable.

Many people build them but you can get ready made ones already built:
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=carputer

Also a carputer runs not very demanding software so getting some mega fast pc is just a waste of money.

Get something that is robust and can take a knock.

Also invest in decent wireless networking at home.

Mines programed so when i pull up at home. the pc stays on and downloads all my latest music from my home network ready for the next time i jump in the car

£100-200 for the actuall pc.

mattchewone
2nd August 2007, 15:47
wow thats pretty impressive i have to say mate! The carputers arent as cheap as i thought, Thought they maybe a bit cheaper. May have to see if my dad can put me one together in one of the cases. What OS you running? Can you buy specific OS for it? Or does the RoadRunner take over as soon as it boots up?

*EDIT* Does yours have a DVD drive, how would you use it if its mounted behind the dash?

djrem
2nd August 2007, 16:30
Its not mounted behind the dash.

mine will be based in the boot and cables for the screen and touch interface to the dash.

Im in two minds about putting DVD drive in as it would be PC Spec an probably skip in a moving environement.

Instead i was going to mount a larger hard drive and use software called DVD Shrink to copy DVDs from 9GB discs down to 4.5GBs and placed on hard discs.

these dvd files would then be transfered via wireless to the cars internal hard drive in a matter of minutes upon coming into the wireless zone of my house.

Mine will use WindowsXP and then customised using winlogin which tells windows what to load.

It would load RoadRunner instead of Explorer (your startbar) and if road runner fails, the pc runs the next program on the list - explorer.

So if you get it wrong, your pc will boot into windows you recognise :)

You can mount the pc behind the dash. Lilliput make a single DIN sized case that fits into a CD Player slot but its pricey and probably made of tosh.

What machine have you got matey? You got any more pics of you system or anything? I havent got wireless so would need someway of getting music and DVDs etc on to the machine. What else can it be used for apart from DVD music GPS TV? Can you use internet?

djrem
2nd August 2007, 17:16
its a computer.

it can do what ever your personal computer does. There really is no limits.

Coupled with bluetooth, you can establish a connection to your phone and use the internet doing msn, browsing, even sax-p.

Ive been building mine from the software side of things so i have a system i like.

At the moment its on an old laptop.
Im still looking for hardware that takes my fancy. This is the heart and brain of my install so i dont want to get it wrong.

I would recommend buying a dedicated car pc though over converting a laptop because of the power issues you may have.

The carputer needs to turn on and be playing asap from the key hitting the ignition.

www.mp3car.com is a good site to start looking for this stuff :)

EDIT: Good Base to start:

Im currently looking at head lights to put on the car.
Now ive seen these set from essex racing which have a proper halo ring and not a gay ring of plastic with a single led at the bottom.

But need to get the front wing re-aligned first so they fit ok ;)

Im on holiday from tuesday. so work on the car will continue from the 17th :)

djrem
11th August 2007, 11:43
Nice job of binning the old motor, while you are at it you may as well remove the dash and fit the full loom inside the car and into the engine bay ready for the new engine. It will be a lot easier to transplant the full loom than hack the old one apart. Just looking at the wheels, are they not kahn rsr`s, i have one in 17 inch and they look similar at the angle you have the pic. Get a side on view and someone will definately tell you.

SATURDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER UPDATE

Ive been on holiday so progress has been slow.

Sun was out so got some more pics of the body shop worl:

http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/81/114/503085200/n503085200_1198074_2859.jpg

RS Fabrications are going to make up a custom radiator to resemble an intercooler design to sit in that massive gap at the front behind the fron bumper.

Mesh is so 1998 ;)

ICE and custom dash progress

This is the final design for the custom dash:

http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/81/114/503085200/n503085200_1198077_3521.jpg

It wont be fiberglass.
Seen so many fiberglassed in.
Instead it is going to be sealed from behind and then be screwed in with the same desgin as your door cards currently use [counter sunk holes with black screws]
I think that will give the mst OEM look possible.

http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/81/114/503085200/n503085200_1198084_5156.jpg

The buttons at the bottom will be relocated to above the screen where the CD player once was.

"No CD Player? Please dont tell me you're putting it in the glovebox?!"

Nope. Theres no CD Player.
For those that havent read all through the pages, the car will be running off of a RoadRunner Frontend Car PC.

This will control as many controls as possible that dont have to be hard wired for an MOT.

Once we took the screen out, the housing was offered into place.

http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v112/81/114/503085200/n503085200_1198081_4448.jpg

I don't think so, the colour scheme of the car is silver and black, as thats the colour of the seats. It doesn't look to bad with white wheels but i think black will just suit the finished car better:

I have just bought a 106 XSi and it came with this suspension on it but i don`t need it as i have coilovers to go on. I believe it is a

bilstein sprintline kit, compromising uprated dampers, eibach -55m/-60mm springs, i also am including two brand new drop links,

and the hub/struts all assembled and ready to bolt on to your 106 S1 rallye, 106 XSi etc. The car handled well when i drove it back

and that was with the old droplinks, remember this kit is being supplied with brand new ones - never used!!!

With this kit the ride will NOT be harsh, itl be smooth yet firm. Any more questions feel free to ask, plus check

out my other auctions! GOOD LUCK! Postage is available but i would have thought it to be expensive

The Making of Mr Rems 106

PART 1. Murphy's Law - If it'll can go wrong, it will

With a smashed up 106 straggling the road and my self in the back of an ambulance slurring away with whatever gas it is they give you, my mind was ticking what i was going to do now my car was in shreads across the asphalt.

After an operation to locate my elbow back in place and fixing 6 screws to hold my snapped lower arm together, i returned home after 3 days in hospital.

Upon getting home, i had some post.
It was from Reg-Transfers. My number plate had officially changed over to my now written off car. M12 REM had begun its life with me at the end of my car.

It only felt fitting that we start with a new 106 and begin to build an unstoppable show beast.

After a drunken evening on eBay. i had

From the original listing, the car looked like this:

http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v63/81/114/503085200/n503085200_116436_834.jpg

Before i had even picked it up, the modifying itch had begun.
Heres my room a week before picking the car up:
http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v63/81/114/503085200/n503085200_196649_4989.jpg

The car arrived and i wasnt impressed. I'll be frank. The car was the definition of Bodge. While i made my mind up on what to do i begun fitting the extras i had in my possession. First the Front TVs:

http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v67/81/114/503085200/n503085200_237245_9619.jpg

Then the interior:
http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v67/81/114/503085200/n503085200_237248_448.jpg

http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v67/81/114/503085200/n503085200_237247_179.jpg

TVs were fitted into some custom rear seat headrests:
http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_242588_5125.jpg

And because i had them aswell as the car already having the fixings, i plugged in some LED undercar gear.

http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_242593_6360.jpg

This was the last evening the car was deemed on the road.
As of the next day, i had time off work and an idea brewing in my head.

Should i keep it, should i sell it.
I was planning to go look at this:
http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/8/web/236000-236999/236622_1.jpg

But then the test results from the 106s MOT came in.

18 Failures. Looks like i wouldnt be making any money from selling the car as a garden lawn ornament.

So i was stuck with a car with an interior worth more than the whole thing and no way of getting it anywhere as it was deemed a health hazard.

Part 2 : From WhiteWashed Paint to Gunning Smoothy

With the car now in the garage taking up room, my money from my last 106 invested in a two tone piece of MOT failing scrap, i had to weigh up what to do.

It needed a respray,
The body kit re-fitting
New bonnet, new doors,
New brake front and real,
New driveshafts,
Arches rolling,
New gearbox, New alternator, new rear beam, new everything really.

£1800 of car was now reduced to £60 worth of scrap.

Oh fuck it i thought. Ive got a roof over my head and ive got a job that supports me, lets do it.

So the transformation began.

First was to strip the car to a shell, get rid of anything the previous owner could have, and probably had have bodged.

Starting at the front, everything was removed bit by bit over the course of the easter weekend:

http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_270710_2062.jpg

Ripping off her clothes to show the little hairdryer of an engine running it.
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_270711_2309.jpg

By now the car had become somewhat of a joke where i live and at work. Some people loved it. Usually they were kid on their bikes cycling past on their way to mug an old woman shouting: "Nice car Bruv". All this family i didn't know i had.
Anyway the rest of the world that was sane and knew the vehicle was with me when i said it was getting a complete over haul.

1.1 8v engines with cannons for exhausts and a mushroom ripshit induction kit aren't individual, they're just a copy&paste from 1997's max power cover cars.

With some help from my understanding friends that agreed, joined with me and the makeover become. Something else to add to the list then. a 1.6 Engine conversion and some proper mechanical setup for the car.

As we stripped the car we noticed a colour change.
Purple and white on the outside.
basic Blue on the inside:
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_270712_2565.jpg

Looks like whoever bodge the respray did it on the super cheap. The door seals werent even removed

http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_270714_3100.jpg

Even on a mobile phone camera you can see how crap pants the boot flush was done:
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v73/81/114/503085200/n503085200_270715_3348.jpg

In order to save cash on the bodyshop (they had a lot of work to do!) we decided to remove the engine. At the time we were thinking of putting it back in for a bit.

http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v78/81/114/503085200/n503085200_779126_763.jpg

The car was becoming a multi-colour pest with yellow primer, grey primer, pink filler and the original blue beaming out from the engine bay, it was anyones guess what we were going to do with it.

In the process of this weekend, i found out that french cars mean engineered to pass Health and Safety Laws. Well, just. Really its a blessing. Means the Pug engine's only held in with 3 bolts.

http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v78/81/114/503085200/n503085200_779127_1006.jpg

Undoinging it onto a skate borad underneath, we lifted the car up and over to remove the little tyke form the bay.
http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v78/81/114/503085200/n503085200_779128_1255.jpg

Tie on and yank:
http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v78/81/114/503085200/n503085200_779129_1498.jpg

And thats all it is. The engine rolls around on the floor. Next day its on eBay and sells for £10.80
http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v78/81/114/503085200/n503085200_779130_1743.jpg

So the car spanned multiple colours and the bodyshop just said "leave it, we'll sort it out"

http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v78/81/114/503085200/n503085200_779132_2225.jpg

So off to the body shop it was:
http://photos-d.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_841107_3164.jpg

After it was sat there and i made my request list for modifications, the work begun. The thing that really annoyed me most about the car when i got it was its lack of real paint. That and the minimal effort put into the respray.

First thing was the interior and door struts:
http://photos-c.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v104/81/114/503085200/n503085200_942690_2749.jpg

Modifications to the car included a bonnet extention and smoothing of locks, indicators and roof gutters.

http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v104/81/114/503085200/n503085200_942692_3558.jpg

Some might mistake the car for riding on hydraulics. Im not a drug dealer, the car will be using real suspension i can assure you.
http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v104/81/114/503085200/n503085200_942693_3923.jpg

The car was away for two weeks from start to finish of the paint job.

She returned in full glory:
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_974158_9543.jpg

http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_974159_9891.jpg

Roof gutters gone:
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_974161_521.jpg

And the boot was finished properly:
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_974163_1087.jpg

During the time at the body shop, it was found that the car had originally been involved in a big front end shunt resulting the the front headlight never going to fit properly :(
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_974163_1087.jpg

But while we oozed over the car in its new clothes, we knew that there was one thing missing from here:
http://photos-200.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v107/81/114/503085200/n503085200_974168_2637.jpg
