View Full Version : quick question about gear box/clutch

right, since i have had my car, when in 5th gear, cruising along about 45mph, if you take your foot off accelerator to go for brake, it will crunch and pop out of gear. I took it to garage when it was under warranty and they reckoned it was my driving! Now at the time, it didnt do it much and i thought, maybe. But its worse now, and i know for sure its not my driving. Its everytime you get to around 45mph and only in 5th. Also the gearbox seems quite clunky compared to other cars i have driven. Is this the sign of the gearbox going, or clutch? or both?!

does sound like there is somthing wrong may be just your gear linkage or worn selector forks

If you get your linkages greased that might cure it mate?

It might.
But it could be a number of things tbh mate?
Clutch might be on the way out if it doesnt say in gear.
Trial and error!

seems odd its only doing it in 1 gear
might be the 5th gear in the box or selectors
what does the clutch feal like

it doesnt seem too bad, it feels like its more the gearbox, as its really clunky when putting it in gear. The biting point is in the middle if you know what i mean.

biting point should be around 2 inches from floor
its not slipping or anything like that
is there oil in the gearbox
yerdusk
20th March 2007, 17:49
no it hasnt slipped before. How can i check the gearbox oil? lol!
hesslevtr
20th March 2007, 17:52
you could drain it and top it up then its fresh oil anyway
if you cant be arsed on the end of the gearbox theres a 19mm bolt undo that if it leaks out theres plenty in
if nothing comes out top it up and see hoe much you get in before it comes out again

lol ok nice one! well i will go and have a go tmrw. If not then i might just spend the weekend replacing clutch and box. Is it ok to buy a second hand box?
hesslevtr
20th March 2007, 18:03
yeah but you may run the risk of buying a fooked 1 so make sure it comes with some guarentee
check the shaft in the box has no play in it or its a bearing gone inside
yerdusk

ok, will i need to lift engine out to remove my box to have a check? Or can it be done with just supporting the engine?
