22nd March 2007, 21:54
thats a shit one, tell her to go fuck herself, these people are just on power trips. what happens if the customer just wants to do their shopping and doesnt want to have a chat? ask them that when your in for the hearing. also point out that maybe someone will class that as harrassment as you kept on pestering them to talk. i dont mean to sound funny but really go to town with this one as its plain stupid.

Were you given customer service training when you started or at any point since you've been there?
Matt_e
22nd March 2007, 22:01
how are you supposed to start a conversation with a total stranger, who you only see for like 2mins?
Mitchell
22nd March 2007, 22:01
id tell her to fudge off and choke her with a carrier bag
what a cow

yes, but she only had a couple of items hardly enough time to start a conversation with her
Certi

Yeah I know what you mean, but as Hessle said, it's all part of the retail business these days. Seems a bit harsh to put you straight to a disciplinary though.

Go to Tescos ;)
Nah seriously, at my work we have like a mystery shopper who comes in and sees what we do asks us questions etc.
Its always a different guy/girl.
Because I didn't say anything more than goodbye after she left I got a warning..
Even refilled her water bottle as I thought she was quite HAWT.
Didn't really wna make too much eye contact because she might think im perving on her as she was in a bikini...
Btw I'm a lifeguard lol.

22nd March 2007, 22:16
considering they tell you to engage with customers in your induction before they even let you on the tills, i think its quite fair that you are pulled up on it, you must know how much they like thier MCM and MAC stats.
the discaplinary will just be a chat with your line manager, and a bit of retraining. dont worry about it

think though, she could have just been joe public, wasnt impressed and then wouldnt go back, thats 1 customer lost. or if it was the MC then thats a strike off on the score which will affect everyones bonus.
it may seem harsh but you are in a people communicating environment, just smiling and asking if they need their bags packed doesnt cut it in this day and age unfortunatley.
(i know how they think as im a night manager there thats all)

22nd March 2007, 22:25
I'd say that was pretty harsh. I don't see what else you can do. You were polite so i dont see the problem!
Danr

Bet you wouldn't have got a disciplinary if you had though. Thats what its about in them places. Go the extra mile and you'll be rewarded.
I did and i never had to worry about anything.

i think because it was some one high up their making a big deal about it, if it was a customer they probley would have just had a word with me

just go along to it, sit down, understand that you obviously fell below the expectations of that person and what sainsbury's expect convince them it was a one off, go through a bit more training and just take on board what they say.

Hannah
22nd March 2007, 23:12
I had to do that once, served a lady and apparantly I threw a potato at her! I didn't obviusly but I got bollocked for it.
Sainsburys has always been sh*t, once we had a items per minute and if you scanned less than 12 per min you'd have to be re-trained etc. Its so stupid

Reminds of my brief stint in Game. The shite we had to say was just out of this world. Classic case of american owners trying to apply their training to England, it always ends badly! ;)

That sounds dead harsh mate, Im lucky if I get a hello, goodbye ect at my supermarket!

23rd March 2007, 09:20
I would have thought that if it's in the person's job description
"greet shopper, offer to pack bags, make inane conversation for 30 seconds" or some such, and she didn't do it then harsh as it may seem, it is a failing by that person to abide by agreed standards. (you did agree to those standards by taking the job).
Sorry, but if those are the expected norms, and you didn't meet them, then you're a little like Heather McCartney - you haven't got a leg to stand on.

Sainsburys is shit end of!
I once phoned in sick so i could co to a children in need thing which was being televised.
I got back to work and no one said anything a couple of days later they call me to the mangers office trying to make me confess to faking my illness i denied it right to the end then they told me i was seen on the tv... I laughed and said show me this evidance, they didnt know what to say and it was my word against theirs and I got away with it!
Alot of people done the same but when they were told they were seen on tv they admitted it and got written warnings!

you got pulled up for calling in sick when you were not, and you moan about it?
ok
i didnt go to work last night due to smashing my foot with a pallet truck, i wont get pulled up for that as they knew about it. or it could be joys of being in management there.
As said before, go, take it on the chin, get the talk about retraining etc take heed of what they say and that will be it.

thats what happened to one of my mates who works at sainsburys, except he didnt even say hello or bye cause he had a hang over :P but its only sainsburys who cares if they arent the politest people in the world. its not like you get paid loads to be polite!
brianS

no but you get paid to be in a customer service role which involves interaction to a certain level with customers.

They do this all the time, the must have a target to meet for disciplinary hearings.
We had Dino Adriano come to our store (former executive) and he moaned about everything and the queue for disciplinary hearings outside the managers office was huge.
All you'll get is a verbal warning, maybe written at very worst.
But hey, a written warning at Sainsbury's isn't going to jeopardise your career is it?!?!?!

And I bet your colleagues who had to do your work whilst you were absent were really glad about it weren't they? don't come "the but it's for charideee" line, you let your colleagues down for your own selfishness. What was wrong with sticking a fiver in the collecting tin?
