took rear beam apart today.
t-bars were in WAYYYYYY too tight for me to get them out by myself in my garage so took it to manic motors to let chris paul and his dad work their magic on it. then brought it home like this:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0150.jpg
would of fitted new bearings but as 106parts.com didnt only sent me half the kit i have to wait to do that. so fitted my polyrace rear beam bushs.

Do aftermarket polyrace rear beam bushs make a difference at all?
williamsvts
26th March 2007, 20:02
yeah the bushs make a difference. prevent any rear end steer and make the car more precise.
he charged£25 for it as it took them an hour to get the t-bars out!!!!! thats how tight they were in so if i was trying myself i would still be there now :P
also got some new bolts and washers off him for an extra 5a for the t-bars.

a few choice tools gets them out:- blow torch, screw driver and hammer :D
after stripping my 'new' beam i saw 1 of the stub pins was worn, over the last few days i have been trying to kid myself it will be ok to just stick the new bearings on. but today i realised im going to have to replace it, otherwise it will just wear the new bearings in no time and end up costing me more. going to order new pin tomorrow. here are the pics of the worn pin, pretty fucked you'll see.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0170.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0171.jpg
going to take the beam into work tomorrow to press this out. only way i can think of doing it is by drilling a hole through it, putting a olt through, then putting a bar down it and onto the bolt to press it through. made a little sketch.

got the noobed stub pin out today. took 60 ton to get it out!!!!!!!
heres the fucker here
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0174.jpg
as you can see it was well worn, even though i couldnt feel any play in the arm. so if you ever do buy a 2nd hand beam dont think its mint!!!
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0175.jpg
think i'll give the beam a lick of paint aswell
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0173.jpg
didnt realise i have this shim trapped when pressing the pin out. so need to either buy 1 from somewhere or find a nobbed beam to take 1 off.

Hey man. I'm wondering if that problem you found with your beam is related to the problem I have. I get a loud clonk from the near side when hitting bumps. I've done all the usual things to fix this, but it's made NO difference whatsoever. There's no play eaither, all seems tip top. The car is still low mileage, only just over 35k and that's all motorway miles, so I'm guessing worn bearings would be extremely unlikely. Any ideas?

have you jacked your car up and pulled the wheel back and forth? if not could be you beam mounting bushs. you could take your trailing arms off to check the pins though, that beam above didnt have any play but as you can see the bearings and pin was fucked.

just dropped a screw driver on the exhaust cam rocker so im guna have to paint that again :(
leaky cam ladders? top or bottom? top, just take the rocekr cover off and styick some sealer on. bottom, you need to take cam ladder of and them put sealer on.

getting a canny bit done this morning.
treid my old coil pack cover on with my cam covers to see how they look. look canny good to me :D
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0188.jpg
got the struts off ready to stifen dampers up and put the new springs on:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0187.jpg
and took wishbones off for new bushs and ball joints. going to do these and springs after dinner:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0190.jpg
canny hidden away the wishbone mount bolts :P
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0189.jpg
got new stub pin for rear beam now aswell so needed to mark it up to get it in straight. put teh beam on axle stands and let it swing round till the side thats in was touching the ground. then put the stub on the arm and into the beam (small end though).
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0185.jpg
then i had to mark up and the beam, pin and arm where it had to line up. this should help get it on straight when pressing the pin in.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0186.jpg
should get some more pics this afternoon and should have the front suspension back on.

was going to finish front suspension this afternoon but ball joints arent going to be here till 4pm. so decided to get the beam sorted.
just getting back from pressing the new stub pin in. i thought it would of went in easier than it came out. but again, it took 60 ton to get it in!!!!
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0191.jpg
heres the new pin
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0192.jpg
and compare that to the old 1, which had no play. so if you get a 2nd hand beam dont expect it to be fine if you cant feel any play!!
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0193.jpg
going to go pick the ball joints up soon and press them in, get the wishbones BUSHed up and refit the suspension :D could be a late night.
canny? its a comman word in 'real mans land' :P

Hey Williams.
I've been looking into the problem I've got with the knocking from the rear. Here's a picture I took earlier.
http://i16.tinypic.com/2dke9ty.jpg
Don't worry about the end plate bolt, I took that out while I was looking into things.
What I found was, if I grabbed the end plate, I could move it up and down about 2mm each way. You can see the orange colour where there has been some movement. If I move it fast and hard enough, it makes that same CLANK noise I'm experiencing when driving. Do you have thoughts? Many thanks!!!
sim69er
2nd April 2007, 20:32
very good keep the pics coming i need to get my torsion bar rebuilt befor being lowered how much has the torsion bar cost you in parts?
williamsvts
2nd April 2007, 20:41
rebuilding the rear beam aint cheap mate. bearing kits is £60. but when the bearings go they normally wear into the stub pins and fuck them, as you can see above. these are £75 each. then you need a real good press to ge the old pins in and out. it took 60 ton of pressure to do that.
toad - you could try some new ARB seals. but if they have gone then its more than likely you bearings are about to go as water will have getting in. get them sorted asap. check this page tomorrow when i will of posted the pics of fitting the bearins and the ARB seal, so you'll know what to do.
Toad
2nd April 2007, 20:44
OK, I'll wait for the update eager like! Funny though, if there has been A LOT of rain, and I'm out in it, I don't hear any CLANKS...
Oh yeah, it's been doing the same CLANKING for about 6 months now. I guess it's fooked...
EDIT: The car has only done about 35k, and most of that has been motorway miles... That's why I was hoping it would be something more straight forward.
williams, toad could have the same prob as mine after i got it lowered. tell him what you told me ;)

loose arb, that sounds more like glass bottle knocking than a clunk. does it happen when you go over uneven road or turn?
Toad
3rd April 2007, 08:41
It sounds just like the noise that's generated when you hit the yellow tube with a spanner. Almost like a couple of milk bottles knocking against each other. It happens sometimes when turning, but also happens when I go over bad bumps and uneven road.

Hey man. Please don't forget that info about the ARB! :)
Liking the updates, love the 1.1 badges lol
toad,
take the cover off the passenegr side (same cover as in your pics, but the other side) get a 13mm bolt and a few washers, place the washers onto the bolt, then the bolt into the arb, tighten the bolt, this will act as a jack and pull the arb towards you a bit more, that should stop the clinking, i have to do mine too lol, makes sure you have a few threads of the bolts into the arb, you dont want to strip the threads ;)
thats what williams was telling me to do when i was at his the other week ;)
hope that helps :)
hows it going mark, you making good progress?

OK will do. The picture I posted is the passanger side BTW, as you know I'm sure, the other side doesn't have the hole in the end plate.
So by pulling the ARB towards me, I'm actually going to be pulling it more snug into the end plate?

4th April 2007, 11:15
yeah thats right, needs to be a bolt with an M8 thread, cant remember pitch. but as boz said, most 13mm bolts will be 13mm. you can use a few washers or a socket and a washer.

So Williams, will you be getting a remap or going the kms route?
Yates
4th April 2007, 16:59
its already remapped to run on cams
williamsvts
4th April 2007, 19:33
as matt said. its already been mapped for those cams so i just needed the timing set. which i have done tonight :) will probably see some small gains by having the timing set on the rollers as i done it gauges using catcams figures.
williamsvts
4th April 2007, 19:42
so, after i got in from work this evening it was time to sort the cam timing. to do this i needed to get the pulleys on. if i had 3 clocks i would of done it with the belt on but as i only had 1 i had to do it with the belt off. and be carefull not to move anything when fitting the belt, otherwise it would of knocked the timing out. here it is ready to be set, belt cover and pulleys on:L
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0207.jpg
theni put the DTI probe down onto piston 1 (nearest gearbox), and set this till it was exactly at TDC. then i needed to set the cam timing. i set the inlet to 1.55mm lift (as stated by catcams), but set the exhaust cam to 1.85mm, catcams states 2.05mm for this but QEP have found it to vary from car to car between 1.55mm and 2.05mm. as i dont have a rolling road i went for a happy medium of 1.85mm.
next few pics are just of the covers going back on:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0208.jpg
cant find bolts for outer belt cover at the minute so that will just have to wait :P
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0209.jpg
and here it is ready to be started :P
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0210.jpg
started straight away and ran fine. slightly lumpy but that was expected. couldnt take it for a drive as it hasnt got any petrol in and i wanna wait for the beam to be fitted. hoping to ge that done on friday then give the car a few good runs over the weekend to make sure everything is ok to give it a good thrashing at york :)
got a little pic of the car, cars at both sides of it so couldnt really get a good angle, plus the light was starting to die
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b159/williamsvts/rebuild/DSCN0212.jpg

as some of you may know i think the 'new' 2nd hand beam i have has a bend trailing arm on, as the drivers wheel is lying in at the bottom, as though the car it was off has hit a curb sideways. so this afternoon i put some new bearings into my olf traling arm, ready to fit tomorrow.
