the gas in a plasma TV settles after a few years, and therefore losed picture clarity

Definately LCD mate.

Plasma TVs only have so many running hours, plus LCD is a better quality picture as my parents have a 32" Bravia Sony one.

I have one of these - a projector, and it throws out a massive, stunning quality picture - the one pictured is about 5 foot by 3 foot, but it will go up to 9 foot by 4 1/2 foot.

Quality is stunning, this was Planet Earth.

LCD mate its loads better than plasma :) go to a shop and compare them mate, i find when you get close up to a plasma its goes blurry the LCD is a load better up close and far away :y:

if its quality picture then believe it or not a CRT monitor screen is the best resolution. Drawback being size.

If its a simple LCD/TFT or PLASMA vote then LCD/TFT all the way :)

lmao where did you hear that!?
i repair both for a job and i have never heard as much rubbish as that! lol

if you leave a bright image on the screen it will "burn" into the screen, but u can most of the time get rid of it.

id say plasma mate, not as bright but better picture imo.

ive herd that after a certain size, lcd are just 2 joined together??
not too sure how true it is, but it came from a tv repair guy.

lcg look funny from the side, my plasma is cool. you can sit too the side and still see the screen crystal clear ;)

jay_c
25th March 2007, 10:28
plasma all the way, they have a higher contrast ratio which is your lightest colour to your darkewst...therefore the higher the ratio the broader the range of colours. also they have a hard glass and plastic compound as the screen so are less likely to be damaged, as you know LCD is soft screen and can lead to dead pixels if you poke it!! and on larger sizes plasma has been around a lot longer than LCD so has had longer to optimise the viewing experience, ie. better picture. LCD will have a ghosting effect especially if you watch fast moving images like sport football etc. because the plasma has a faster response time it will not blur on sport etc. hope that helps :y: cough rep cough lmao :P

TheMadSaxo

I've heard plasma is better than LCD the bigger the screen gets.

MarkyG
25th March 2007, 15:33
id go for LCd, plasma for gaming etc can cause burn in on the screen itself, so when you turn it off you can still see a picture, LCD discharges instantly almost, so it is as blank as a blank canvas so to say.

But each to their own. My parents have a 42" plasma and theyres is excelletn, but i prefer LCD

MarkyG
25th March 2007, 15:35
but it all depends on components in the TV itself, shit components = shit tv output. Spending more on a tv doesnt necessarily make it much better than a cheaper version of the same sort

jay_c
25th March 2007, 15:37
panasonic plasma or pioneer are the best on the market. and you wont get screen burn because they have a refresh rate which refreshes the image every few miliseconds...am not sure how fast but it means the image is constantly refreshed thus no image is left to burn on the screen!!!

MarkyG
25th March 2007, 15:39
nufc_lad good choice in game, gears of war always goes down well on A 360

MarkyG
25th March 2007, 15:41
jay_c i may have to invest in a pioneer one then. higher refresh rates sound good to me, dont want a tv for 5 mins then notice burn-in! as im sure many of you wouldnt either

jay_c
25th March 2007, 15:42
yeh lol when your spending all your hard earned cash it makes sense you want it to last! lol. pionneer are slightly more expensive than panasonic but they are both the most respected and well known plasma tvs. definately the best. used 2 work in audio and tv john lewis and we sold soo many panasonics hardly ever got any back too!

How do I choose between Plasma and LCD?
Size matters when it comes to making a choice. LCD is at its optimum performance up to and including 32",
whilst plasma offers optimum performance at 37" and above.

Which is more energy efficient, Plasma or LCD?
The energy consumption of both is actually about the same in normal operating conditions.
An LCD screen consumption is constant whereas with Plasma it fluctuates according to the brightness of a scene,
eg when a scene is predominantly dark , a Plasma will use less energy. All in all the energy efficiency evens out for Plasma and LCD.

A popular Plasma myths dispelled
Does Flat Panel TV need re-gasing? No. Plasma gases are inert and sealed within tiny cells that are sandwiched between glass plates.
There is never any need to re-charge or refill the Plasma.

Which technology has the longer life span Plasma or LCD?
The life span for both is dependent on viewing habits, but if both are watched for the same duration,
one would expect the life span to be approximately the same, 60 000 hours, roughly twice the life span of older CRT technology.

i cant believe people are saying lcd are better quality!

plasma ftw :D

60000 hours is nearly 7 years of constant use... many of us woulda got bored with it by then, and gone for some bigger better tv :P

yeh most liekly to be honest...the ratio of sales to how many we get back isnt much! i think thats what i mean anyway lol. the point is our department used to take phenominal amounts of money in one day selling mostly TVs and panasonic outsold any others by far!

We'v had a 32" plasma in the living room for aaaages and its never failed us.

If an image gets burnt on the screen (Sky+ and my sister have mastered this since she pauses the tv and then forgets about it for hours) theres a function in the menu to clean the screen and it just projects a bright white image accross the screen and in minutes its back to looking perfect :y:

We just ordered a 48" HD LCD for the living room last week so when it arrives ill let you know what the quality is like for large LCDs

Personally though im in a queue to go along mike cracknells route. Once my room is finished being re done ill have an HD projector ;)

We've been looking at either an LG or a Samsung.

i warn you on some of the samsungs the sound is shocking!! you could turn it up while tesing it in a fairly quiet environemt and if you moved the correct distance away to watch it you wouldnt hear it! my adivce look at panasonic or sony but sony are over-priced. Panasonic good value for money plus reliability. and get it from john lewis with the free 5 year guarantee cant go wrong!! :y:

I'm buying a Sony Home Cinema System this week, so I'll run the sound through there anyway.

My mate has got a 42" Samsung and has pretty much the same size livingroom as me (possibly a bit bigger) and the sound on his is OK. :ponder:

If you are looking for a screen up to 23 inch it has to be LCD. Anything bigger than that , plasma is the way forward!

I don't care what anyone says about lcd being better, you sit and watch a film in a dark room on a 40 inch lcd and I can guarantee it will burn your retina quicker than a plasma gives up the ghost!

LCD manufacturers are renowned for using scare tactics against plasmas when it comes to selling their products and as such will tell you that they will only last 5 years and burn images into the screen.

Yes, they will only last 5 years - if you leave it on 24/7!
Yes they will burn an image onto the screen - if you leave something on pause for an hour!

At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and Plasma is generally still more expensive, but that's because it is generally better

Admittedly if you compare a £3k lcd to a budget plasma the lcd should win hands down, but compare a similar size, similar price lcd and plasma and the plasma will be better!

I used to work in a high end AV retailer and after comapring ALL available screens on the market I bought a 50 inch Pioneer Plasma. If they really were as shit and unreliable do you think I would have given £XXXX of my hard earned money to buy it??? No!

Plasma every day for me!

you have got that the wrong way round mate. lcd deteriorates the closer you get to the screen. plasma keeps its clarity.

totally agree mate. much better for watching things with fast movement such as the footie as they have a much better reaction time, the colours appear more natrual also.

screen burn is very rare nowadays so dont worry about that too much!

the pioneers are the bollocks! if i had the money i would def get one of them!

I received this email today: -

Hi Christopher,

Congratulations! You are the winner of the Miami Vice competition featured on the Mirror Online last November.
You have won a Samsung LCD TV and a copy of Miami Vice on DVD. The copy of the DVD should be on it’s way to you, if not arrived already. The TV will arrive separately from Amazon. Can you confirm that the below address is correct and I will order the TV to be sent to you asap!

How cool is that?? I'm pretty sure it was a 42" as well..... although it was back in November that I entered the competition and my memory is not so good now that I'm getting old. LOL :)

Well the LCD arrived and i have to say its bloody terrible. Havnt tried it with anthining HD yet but DVDs are like watching videos on youtube and TV channels arent much better. Massively dissapointed, never n a million years did i think you would be able to see such poor quality, i thought the plasma vs LCD was more of an opinion argument but our Toshiba 48" LCD is damn poor!

Its going back!

Glad people are seeing sense! LCD quality is an illusion. When you see one demonstrated in a shop they ususally use a really bright picture that gives you the impression it's a good quality picture!

It almost the same as buying a hifi. Some people thing if it's loud it's good. Not the case! It's more a quality thing at lower volumes.

AdamW
28th March 2007, 10:06

Don't get me wrong there are some brilliant small screen LCD's out there and some fairly poo plasmas. Samsung, smaller Sony and Toshiba LCD's for example, but anything over a 32 inch LCD is let down by poor light technology.

Oh well, it didn't cost me anything.
