Ok Ive just got back home from a week in Spain with the missis (very nice it was too) so I pop'd into see the folks yesterday to show the old man the copy of Land Rover Monthly I had taken with me to read (as I was dead keen on picking up a cheap 4x4 for the summer) only to be informed that Twat Gordon Brown had stuck the tax for 4x4's uper to a whopping £300 a year for this year then for 2008 it will increase to a simply stupid amount of £400 a year! :panic:
I mean, thats just plain silly! I DO understand he has to get mothers out of the trend of running one very small child 5mins up the road in a 3.0ltr X5 but this tax increase will serve nothing to drive these people out of the 4x4's as this will now make them even more exclusive and for the rich only!
I hear from people Ive spoken in work with this morning that farmers and other working class people Who REALLY need a 4x4 will have to fork out this stupid tax just to get about.
This man should not be allowed to replace Tony Blair as Christ knows what other stupid laws he will pass :panic:
One other thing, does anyone know if this tax will effect Scooby's and 4x4 Pandas?

how much is the new VTS tax?

The tax only applies to new vehicles (registered after 23/03/2006) - pick up a pre-2001 Landy and you're tax will be £185.

Just my opinion here but if you can afford to run a big car you can afford to
TAX a big car.
Whole point is, if you dont like it then buy something cheaper to run... 1.9TDi
estates for example.

There's been a few threads about this - but here's some more info:

its fooking stupid.
i think they should ONLY increase the tax for the daft bimbos taking their kids to school in a 4x4, and the car doesnt even know what the fuck mud is!!
why the fuck do they need a 4x4... why not get a voyager.. or a galaxy?!
its because of these daft slags that people who DO use their 4x4s as a 4x4 now have to pay shit loads!

i understand taxing ppl with big cars if they are in towns and cities and if they dont one and they are jus wasting money.
but we have got two alaskan malamutes and horses its our living we need a 4x4 i dont see why we should be penalised because there are too many ppl buying 4x4's cause they have got too much money!!!

Tax bands are based on how much co2 is pumped out. When you say 4x4 you mean 4 wheel drive right? Well get a panda 4x4! Tax band D!
Its been proved that its quite capable off road, when fifth gear put it up against a new range rover.

Not exactly. Only vehicles registered after 2001 are banded according to emissions. Prior to that, there are two bands based on engine size. So, if you want a huge 4x4 pre-2001, it'll cost the same to tax as a VTS...

Bingo, if you want to find out how much your next tax disc will cost you have a look in here: New Car Tax Rates (http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73287)
If you previously paid £190 for your VTS insurance your noy paying £205 or more
If you paid £175 for it your now paying £180
Pre 2001 VTRs are now on £180
Post 2001 VTRs are now £140 iirc

so vtrs are now cheaper on tax? after 2001.
and i think its a good idea, 4x4 drivers are twats, though to avoid the big tax there shud be some license or something to show u actually farm with it, then people who actually use it dont get taxed the same.

Well said, that should help with resale values on older vehicles.

Ok take a look here . . .
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524
This shows the new tax bands and clearly states the more heavy CO2 producing cars registered after 23rd March 2006 will be stongly hit by the £300 road tax.
But it looks like I could still pick up a oil burning 3.0ltr Nissan Patrol for peannuts (as people with 4x4 are already starting to sell up with out looking into it) and tax it for £180 the same as my VTS and still kill the planet and a muddy field near you, wicked :y:

If you can really justify needing a 4x4, for example: in the rural countryside or if you are a farmer then you shouldnt be punished for that by having to pay more tax. However if you cannot justfy needing you and you have one just for the sake of it then i agree you should pay more tax. They emit more pollution and are heavier so damage the roads more than smaller cars so should be made to pay for that.
