VVT (variable valve timing)

Test drove a clio 182 the other day as i was interested to see how it would compare to my vts, it didnt seem any faster but it was cold i had a salesman in and my girlfriend so not a true indication but when i put my footdown it seemed like a turbo kicked in, i asked the salesman wot it was and he said it was the vvt, i left it at thet but have just been wondering how it actually works if any body will kindly explain.

changes the valve timing to increase overlap, allows more air and fuel into the engine which increases torque

My mum and dad have a suzuki swift thats got vvt. I'd say it was bloody nippy for a 1.5!

Yes I have the swift 1.5 GLX VVTS it is nippy for a little car.

I think they are great cars! I'd have my mum and dads if i could. I saw one at FCS last year with lambo doors!! Very nice

LoL It's a nice little car but not for mods lol... I changed the standard 15" alloys to 17" multispokes but thats it. I was happy to buy it (long time ago Nov 2005 :( its old now lol) because it didnt have boy racer appeal and the insurance is cheap too. They look nice though and theres loadsa room inside which is good. The keyless entry is cool too and the air con and all the other extras are fab for the price!!

I have VVTi on my Roadster.. its okay i dunne really notice it tbh.. its 140 bhp 1.8.. vvti is supposed to kick in at 4.5k revs.. dont know if its the same on clios.. i mean i notice a bit of a boost.. but nothing amazing..

Either the salesman or your missus must weigh a lot!
(just joking mate! ;) )

It's a lot faster on paper. At least 1 second quicker to 60mph and about 5 seconds quicker to 100mph through the gears.

i definately agree with that! the VTEC is a quality piece of engineering imo!

all it does is just up more intake of air so ecu has to match that bunging in more fuel then u get more power and so on, vvt is very good so at low granny driving its good at ecomnoic mpg and just driving normaly, but when u drive it hard it turns into the engines full potenial and power when u want and need it. in most engines its advancing and retarding the cams

Vtecs use another cam design so when you drive it hard i.e. take it past 5.5 the oil pressure moves over the cam so that the larger cam lob is now active lus making the valves open alot further and for longer getting more air in and fuel mixture and then more power, its good like a small turbo but u can use it if u want to drive hard or just not use it when u dirve granny stlye. But when ever u drive a vtec u always just want to drive it hard purely cause of the noise when the vtec kicks in :)
