I am due to be selling up in the summer, at the moment I am wanting a Saxo VTS but not sure if its the right car I should be buying. At the moment I am doing 36,000 miles a year but hoping to cut this down to about 20,000 miles per year i.e. instead of driving the 70 miles to work getting the train etc. I previously had a Saxo and yes it had a few problems but you expect that. Would I be stupid buying a Saxo VTS with roughly 40k on the clock and in two years doubling the mileage?

Also, I want to buy it standard and have the car tuned up myself so I know everything has been done right. What would my mpg be with i.e. BMC CDA Air Filter, Milltek Exhaust System, De-cat, Piper Cams etc? Would the car be less reliable?

The car would be reliable still if the work was done correctly but you probably only going to be returning 20-25 miles pergalon around town my vtr had the same done to it as what you are going to do with the vts and i used to only get around 65-70 miles to a tenner

I really really fancy a Saxo VTS but not sure if I should be sensible and get a Bora TDi.

I'd be getting a diesel car if I was doing that kinda mileage.

A Bora TDI would chew up a VTS aswell i'd of thought, those TDI engines are unbreakable. so fast and smooth with it too....i would def be going for the BORA/GOLF/PASSAT...you have to think of comfort aswell driving all that way mate

definatly go for a diesel if your going to be driving that many miles, much better mpg compared to a vts but u could always buy a vts as a weekend toy.

Thing is you can get VTS's with around 40k on the clock for £3000ish. A Bora TDI with about 100bhp and 70k on the clock with cost £5000. The top of the range models i.e. Highline/Sport with 40k on the clock cost around £7500+.

Why not get a diesel lupo for runaround then get a VTS later for weekends? The lupos get something close to 70mpg dont they?

Couldn't afford to buy both, so I need to really decide on one car. I need something which is going to last me 2/3 years and is going to be reliable and will run to a fair amount of miles. VTS won't run to crazy miles so I would just need to cut my miles but if I was to get a diesel I would just continue to do my mileage.

Any other diesel suggestions?

What about getting a motorbike?

Have a VTS as your evening car.

I did think about getting a Honda CBR 125 or Aprillia RS last year but in all seriousness I am bad enough in a car. I would kill myself so ain't going to take the risk.
