hey all,
im sorry for another one of these types of threads.. totally irrelevant to saxos, and totally relevant to shooting, etc
how long can you leave a rabbit for after shooting? before it is unsafe to be eaten? i.e hung up, so off the floor so rats and mice cant get at it.
cheers

Leo
29th March 2007, 16:01
no what i mean by weird is yesterday you was saying how your mom feeds ya and you had to resort to going the sarnie shop as you cant cook. now your blowing rabbits heads off and eating them like rambo
Steve
29th March 2007, 16:03
sure you can leave them for a few days, dont have to skin it or out first, as hares are best eating after they have been hanging a few days :y:
Viper
29th March 2007, 16:03
aye.. im not cooking the rabbit.. my uncle is :)
edit, cheers steve :) it will have been hanging for 2 days. and its a rabbit, not a hare :) the hare legged it, rabbit didnt. lol
jay
29th March 2007, 16:05
if you slit its throat and drain the blood it'll be alright for a week, if you leave the blood in it'll start decomposing. :)
Steve
29th March 2007, 16:07
12 bore :A: so would be lead shot
the beauty of a 12, i still love my 410 pump action lol :homme:
Viper
29th March 2007, 16:08
not slit it yet. my uncle's doing all the eurgh bit for me. lol
wouldnt have thought it would decompose if rats etc cant get to it..
oh, and my uncle told me to hang it head down.. whys that?
edit: 410? you girl.. how old are you. lol
Steve

sure its because the head is heavier, and you hang it so all the blood runs, i dont understand fully but in the past everything in my garage has been head down!
Steve
29th March 2007, 16:10
410 i have a 12 but 410 sometimes more sporting as harder to hit, less power less shot! and gets heavy pegging a 12 semi auto around for miles and miles after a while.

so when u cut its throat it will drain the blood quicker as its all at the head

yeah, i tend to see more hares than rabbits. lol, i was surprised when i saw this one :) was a good shot aswell :) fair distance way.. had to get another shot on it though, cos it was wriggling like a biatch, and there's no way i could break its neck :S
edit: if u find the 12 heavy.. then dont use a semi auto! the action in them is REALY heavy. at shoots, people dont like semi autos, as they cant tell if they're loaded ornot. get yourself an over and under :y:
oh, and what make/model is your gun?

kenny
29th March 2007, 17:51
your suppose to slit their throats and leave them hanging by their feet for a day to remove all the blood. skin them and then you can eat them
bullit
29th March 2007, 17:55
skin it and make a hand puppet out of it while watching it cook.

lol this is weird i didnt expect anyone to shoot here! ive been shooting since i can remeber, and in fact i went rabbit shooting round my mates last wkend cos his mum wanted rid of them! shot 12 in total, and also u r supposed to gut them very soon after shooting them, when u r still out in the field! all of the ones i shot r now ready to be cooked for the dogs!lol i was using a .22 bolt action rifle by the way.
Viper
29th March 2007, 18:18

Leo
29th March 2007, 18:20

Chris_O
29th March 2007, 18:27
no u would never usualy remove the bullet it would be so hard! generly u wont even find it
Chris_O
29th March 2007, 18:27
well if its a shotgun u may occasionaly find a bit of shot but not that bad
Steve
29th March 2007, 18:29
off a rifle they normally go in and straight out, shotgun may find the odd pellet, when you skin it you can see the entry hole!
Viper
29th March 2007, 18:32
i can already see the entry holes :P and ive just thought.. i hope none of the shot perforated the gut........
and.. removal wise.. exactly as said above. i once ordered duck in the lake district, and found a lead shot. lol, glad to see it was fresh duck :y:

after it had been shot, went to collect it and found out it was quite rare to find them like that, with above certain number of prongs or whatever ( dont ask me too much bout that not an expert lol) and it ended up being in the shooting times and winning this award!
