Hi peeps ;)

im in need of a bit of advice to do with work.
i have been offered a position with a rival company that are in the same industry that im in now, they are going to start a division up in their company that i specialise in. they have approached me and i must admit im rather interested.
i also got an email yesterday off my old boss that left last month, turns out he is working their now and is getting a few 'good men' together to help start this division.
now, this makes sways me to go as my gaffa was sound and looked after me work wise ;) .
im thinking if i leave and help to start this and it takes off, i will have been one of the peeps that started it off and made it work (wont be hard to do) and i will possibly get promoted faster ;)

only draw back is that i may not get as much over seas work until we get a good reputation going, so may be stuck back in the uk for a while ( i love my overseas work lol).

but then, the company im with are really starting to take the mick.

what do you guys recon??

im thinking of getting all the info for the new job and see what the crack is.

i will have to finish my job over here for my current company as i dont want to burn any bridges, if i leave on a good note i cann always return ;)

or i could use this to try and get more money from my company ;) lol. its a canny rare specialist job i do and there are not alot of people that can do it.

Help me out peeps, what would you do?

cheers

this other company were just taken over by a big american company that rival my current company, so they are/will be willing to get all the best gear etc to make it work.

would love to go and start something from scratch that will defo be successful, would be a great achievement to say, i was one of the peeps that started this years ago lol

Im not one to leave for bigger companies/more money. Loyalty iswhat matters to me most. But if you liked your old boss alot, i would say go with him, especially if the company is taking the piss now. Also the sense of achievement in helping to get the division started.

Plus the CV kudos is awesome.

May i ask what it is you actually do? =/

im not that fussed about the money, as the scope for promotion will be better within this new job, would end up being a supervisor and project engineer.
if they offer the same money, i would probs leave, would rather go for more money tho ;)

i was thinking about the CV kudos too.

i work in the oil and gas industry bud, im part of a crack team of on-site machinist and bolting technicians. basically go to places when things go tits up and the pipelines leak etc, we go in, machine all the high pressure connections and sort everything out so the pipeline joints dont leak ;) companies pay mega bucks for us to do it as safety and the environment come first ;)
or when a new build comes up and they want it to be ready by a certain date with a flawless leak record, we go in and do the lot ;) also get a lot of shutdown/upgrade world on rigs etc.

i have already been a supervisor on a load of jobs and have been all over the place doing surveys for customers so i could use that to my advantage with this new place lol poach some of the customers hehe

tbh mate it sounds like its something you really want to do, and at the end of the day, will you still be happy? if the answer is yes, then go for it! but if i was your current boss, and you told me you were leaving for a rival company, i wouldn't expect him to be too chuffed about it! but like you said you could use this as an opportunity to get more money, but remember one thing "no-one is in-replaceable!"

Im not one to leave for bigger companies/more money. Loyalty is what matters to me most.

tbh though mate, if your going to stay loyal to the same company all your life, your not going to get very far in life are you. i could have stayed earning pittance at my old job as a Fitness instructor, but after nearly 3 years i decided it was time for me to start earning some real money so moved on, but i still visit the gym regularly and they don't charge me for using it, so clearly there are no bad feelings there!

No i agree with you, you cant stay in a crap job earning rubbish because your loyal to your firm. But if i was approached today by a bigger firm who said ya know join us we will pay you more then i wouldnt really be bothered, ill go out and earn more when im ready sorta thing.

Yeah you cant stay earning poor wages all your life but do it when you wanna go do it, unless of course a once in a lifetime oppertunity comes along, that may be different.

Was just saying if hes happy in the job then stay loyal, but as he said they aren't treating him right at the mo so i would deffo leave.

im not saying im in-replaceable :)
my current/new gaffa is sound, but he has promised me a load of things, i have done any amount of so called favours and have not had anything in return, ie just came back from a month away, a day later i was going somewhere else for a month and lost my time off i had earned. i was told, do this and i will make it worth your while. i got nothing in return.
he has just started to take the mick again, probs because ive had 6 weeks off in the house ;)

i would say that my old boss was more loyal to me, he kept his word.

i think i know what i will do, you only live once right ;)
i will see what the other company will offer, i will finish this job in korea and let my current boss know the score. that way i can always come back if need be :)

its nothing to do with the money, its defo not crap ;)
i just want to get a better sence of achievment more often.

i love this job, as its never the same job twice, you get to travel and get a great sence of satisfaction when you finish the job and you get praised for pulling people out of the shite.

but im just tempted with this starting up a new division with a company, when its succesful i would be able to say, i helped start that ;) your name would be noted with all the right places ;) thats how my old gaffa started off, he helped start 2 places up and has left to go to this company. he was on 80k+, company car, + % of sales and a bonus ;) just thinking that could be me in a few years time lol :)

You sound like you've made your mind up bud lol, if it were me I would take it mate as you say they have asked for you to join them and could part of a great achievement. You never seem to be out of work so even if it did go tits up I'm sure you wouldnt be hard pressed to find work.

my head is pounding today, i have been hungover all day, then thinking about this also, i have been sitting in our office all day and there is a 50ft mobile drill, drilling holes for the foundations of a crane right next to the office, its loud as fook, the ground is shaking and i feeling rather rough now lol

Nice one ;)

just had an email from my old boss. they are offering me a salary and a day rate. which is way better than my current, his words were, i will look after my origional boys ;) with my current job, i get a crap rate for siiting in the house doing nowt, this job i will still get a garanteed salary when sitting in the house ;) result.

im going to call him when i get back to my hotel and find out more, then have a chat with the missus and a good think about it ;)

go for it Boz, take the move, more money, the prospects, the achievement, and be known as one of the original founders....

like you needed to ask?! lol

One of my dads customers has probs supplied you with parts, or youve worked with parts from him, he supplies gas and oil pipelines and parts,
used to work for Proclad international, but started up his own company now.

He had to go out to somewhere far east last week, £50,000 for one valve type part?!?

Right industry be in with that sort of money floating around!

27th April 2007, 09:23
Pack your bag, give notice and go, if you dont you will regret it later. Being in at the start counts for alot and it is only a small field of special workers that stand out. You are one of them so go,go, go.

boz
27th April 2007, 09:28
lol probly, the money floating about is unreal.
saw a £750k that exploded in russia due to the water left inside frezzing and expanding! blew a load of the parts off and cracked it. it was supost to be flushed and have nothing in before it left korea. it was set inplace early on during the project, now they have to dismantle a chunk of the rig to remove the valve and replace it, these valves are built to order and will take a while to get out there. then they need to get a team off people out there to hydro test it then nitrogen test it. its going to cost them a fortune, but they dont care lol

wish i got a % of the projects i work on ;)

just going to ring the other company now and see what the crack is ;)

boz
27th April 2007, 09:31
i only have two work 3 weeks notice, the job here is due to finish 1st week in june, i will see if my old gaffa would be prepaired to let me finish this. then that way i wont be dropping my current company in the shit, hopefully that will show that im willing to help out and leaving on good terms.
some peeps at my place would just get on a plane, come home and tell the office on monday that they have rapped lol

i will feel guilty doing it, but i carnt hang around waiting, when somewhere else is offering things now ;)

30th April 2007, 16:05
I'd go for it boz. Like you said if all goes well you will be in good stread to climb the ladder in the business. The UK time might not be so bad either, you will get to spend a bit more time with the saxo (and your gf, i suppose :err:)

If not, you might at least manage to scare a bit more money out of your current work & you can tell them you want to move company because your being sent abroad for too long periods of time ;)

EDIT: Well lol i only read the top 6 posts, glad you made the decision though, all the best with it! :y:

get an offer in writing then approach your current employers and make a demand for the same wage plus more or you'll leave.

then if they offer you a better deal. fire that deal at this new rival compay.

Either way you come out better

boz
30th April 2007, 16:14
new company still has a load of work abroad too ;)

they have offered me more than current employer and its a different pay scheme ;)

so i get a salary even when im sitting in the house, then get a day rate fore every day i work ;)
current job, is pap money for sitting in the house, then i get paid for every hour i work.

will be a few quid better of at the end of the year.

i have made a canny wedge this year with my current employer, but i doubt they will offer more, even if they did i will probs still leave.

some of the techs at this place are on silly money when working abroad, tax free too ;)

boz
30th April 2007, 16:16
