hi
am i right in saying putting a 106 rallye box on my vts will improve the acceleration??
how much do they go 4 & how much does a gearbox rebuild cost ruffly?
I am thinking of getting 1 & having it rebuilt with an lsd.
thanks

s1 boxes are rare.

they use the same sports gearset as any sport box on a saxo/106 its the final drive that differs.

They got for 175-200+ usually.

rebuilds are prob about 300-450 depending on where you go with fully new bearings etc..

quaife ATB diffs are also about 550 and you need the crown wheel machined to fit. if you want to rebuild a box i have a s1 rallye box here thats been damaged and needs a rebuild.

Is the S2 rallye box differently setup than the S1 box Ryan?

yes different final drive.
both use the same sports gearset as the s1,vts etc..

irc the s2 is the same final drive as a vts, maybe a tiny but smaller

1.4xsi is the 2nd best after s1 rallye for short final drives

Just to give a rough idea... :

106GTI FD -> 3.93
1.6 (S2) Rallye FD -> 4.06
1.4 XSI FD -> 4.29
1.3 (S1) Rallye FD -> 4.54

So in all fairness changing the box isnt really worth all the work unless your adding LSD and other uprated internals.

Is that a fair statement to make?

depends what engine you run, and what you intend on using the car for.

a mate has a 183bhp na engine, it needed the xsi box, all the otheres were poo lol!

and alot have noticed big changes from going for a shorter box (final drive) so its personal perference.

and what other uprated intenrals are there :P the diff is the only part that can be classed as weak the gearset is fine

When I was into my Fords more than I am these days not having one - RSturbo owners used to change the box for a Diesal item as they belived THAT to have a slightly shorter final drive and also beleived it to be stronger - Wheather this was true Im not sure as Im no expert.

So if your just looking for a slightly shorter 0-60mph time and you might do the odd strip and track event considering the money involved I take it you feel it would not be worth changing from a S box to say the 1.4 XSi box.

lol i know about the old ford homos and the diesel box..

i personally would switch from an s to an xsi box, as its a good compramise, as it will improve in gear accelleration yet wont give you a ludicrusly small top end like an s1 box
