View Full Version : Oil light flashing
I have a VTR '97
My oil light keeps flashing on the bottom row of lights
but only when im in neutral or coasting.
When i am accelerating it doesnt flash.
its not so much flashing but dimming and brightening up agen.
any ideas what this could be?
Have you checked you oil level??! Normally that would cause the light to come on. And is also means "STOP THE CAR". If your oil level is low enough for that light to come on, don't drive it anywhere until you put some oil in it!

either you've got a faulty light or you havent got enough oil, make sure its full to the top of the dipstick

That's not entirely accurate. A dipstick will have two marks at the bottom of it. You want the oil level to be between these two marks ideally. Too much oil can have consequences too.

yes i know that, i always make sure theres plenty of oil either close to or on the max mark just to be sure.

The oil level of his car is in between the two marks.
and it cant be a dodgy light if its only when the car is idle.
could it be the battery?
(ill answer as he doesnt come on here often)

doubt its the battery mate, maybe its a faulty sensor or summit.

possibly...
could it be a filter problem?

why dont you try draining the oil out and fit a new oil filter to see if it makes a difference. i doubt its an oil filter as it only filters the oil

is it definitly your oil light. Sounds more likely to be your alternator on its last legs. is it just a stop light that flashes? I'm just trying to think why the engine speed would make a difference.
Then again if I was going to panic and think of something that was driven by the engine, what about the oil pump in the sump. This is chain driven by the engine and if not working you would have low oil pressure.
Whats the situation when you are at a steady rpm - say driving at 2,500rpm?

it could be your oil pressure switch
