View Full Version : Steering wheel vibration.
Hi folks.
I've had this odd problem for a few months now, and with a different set of rims. I've picking up a lot of vibration from the steering wheel at speed. I've had both rims balanced and they are spot on. Does anyone know what else I could do to figure this one out? Could it be a driveshaft problem?
Many thanks in advance!

Mine does this a lot after the refurb Toad, dont think Ive had them balanced
yet but the thing is there is a hell of a lot of vibration in the wheels.
Looks like your GTi is copying mine again :p
Oh and get them pics up of your wheels ASAP
It's dark out mate, gonna have to cross your legs till tomorrow! LMAO.

Saxos and pug aint really built that well so you should expect some vibration at high speed or is it really bad?
It's bad enough to realise something isn't quite right. I've driven it in the past with no vibration at all, so something is amiss....
I've also noticed that when driving at speed, the car seems so wander a little. Difficult to explain, but it's a bit like driving at speed (motorway) when it's a windy day. The steering feels like there could be a bit of play there, as it often gives you the feeling that a tiny movement you make with steering doesn't get picked up, but sometimes it does. Very odd...

You checked all the powerdtreering parts, Fluid ect?
Fluid is a little low, but I can't see how that would cause this... Would it?
Could it be something as simple as the locking wheel nut throwing it out of balance? I could always pop the matching normal ones in place and give it a quick test drive.

Erm it might be the steering rack, not sure how or why or what to look for. I just remember someone describing a problem exactly the same as this a while ago and his solution was a new steering rack, which is also a big hassle to get at to replace :err:

ive got this, think ive said in another thread?
doesnt really bother me, it only happens at around 70 and depends on the road...
i just put it down to alloys and no power steering?
ever curbed your car hard? heard that can cause the problem
No, I haven't kerbed it bad. It used to be fine...
Steering rack might be the cause. Hmm...

Do the rims have spacers? If so it could be that.
Or they havent been balanced properly!

Bushes, gotta be the bushes.
No, it's something I've noticed slowly creeping in. I have hit a few pot holes in my time, but the rims are sound. Plus, just 2 days ago I put a new set of rims on and had them balanced and the problem is still there, and possibly seems worse if anything!
I've just taken the locking wheel thingie out and weighed it. It weighs roughly 15g less than the standard ones. I've put the standard ones in place for now, and I will give it a test drive later.
Oh, I had the bushes changed about 2 months ago. I went for some Powerflex poly bushes.
Almost forgot, I don't have spacers, both sets of rims I have used are the correct fitment.
I could always try swapping the wheels around, front to back and vice versa. As they were only put on 2 days ago and balanced, I doubt that's the problem. I watched them balance them...
