View Full Version : Harv's EP3 - Kpro fitted and made 241bhp - Video #515
Hey, as some of you may know, i own a 1.0i mk1 saxo. It is in very good condition (i think anyway lol ;) ) and am still learning to drive.
Lately, i havnt really had much money (as i have no job atm) and still studying for my a-levels. Money goes on drink, driving lessons and food atm :A: . I did some small exterior changes but they didnt look right.
I have put a kenwood headunit in (the most costly 'mod' yet at £150 lol .) Dosent sound much but it is for me :P. I am very pleased with this so far.
When i bought: -

Anyway...... first change was I meshed the grill: - (excuse the dog - dunno why he was in there :homme: ) AND EXCUSE THE WINDOW WIPERS - THERE :homme: :homme: :homme: :homme: I KNOW!!!!! ;)
http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8894/photo0047id0.jpg
Hated the meshed grill tbh - so i then t-cut the badges - hated that aswell. So this week i returned it to standard but painted the chevrons white as well as the rear badges.
So now my rear badges and chevrons are white - im getting white compos so i think it will look good with the badges and grill : -

Heyyy - now dont laugh at my towbar. I tried to take it off yesterday but it wasnt having it. Dunno how to take it off :homme:

Looks alot better IMO.
Plans are : -
- Remove the f*cking towbar ;)
- Remove the windscreen wipers and replace with STANDARD BLACK ONES:y:
- Fit 15" White 3 Stud Compomotives (off ebay most likely)
- Get a sportex full system exhaust with either 4" jap backbox or 3.5" inward roled.
- Lower it 50mm on from and 40 on the rear (spax springs)
- Get bumpers colour coded.
- Fit the induction kit in my garage.
- Got tinted windows coming tomorrow (off saxo180)
- Fit a mk1 vtr spoiler
And thats about it for now.
I know there isnt really much progress atm but im saving :P. Should have 90% of the stuff listed above fitted by september.
Feel free to comment on the car as it stands, and the plans for the car.
Cheers guys
Harv

Aye, should do the trick. Is looking like a bit of a 'shed' atm :P ;)
Taking the towbar off will be a job lol, i need to strongest man in the world to take it off. Some WD40 may do the trick though on the bolts.

oh erm, this stuff i got from my local garage - 'Simoniz white spray' - something along those lines anyway. Then just used some clear lacquer.
yes, the rear quarters arrived today from Saxo180.
Opened the package when i came home from school :D.

I was going to fit them on the car in the rain (its raining here today). But then i came up with a genious's plan :P - i reversed the car into the garage and fitted them :P :p . My garage is full of junk btw - so i managed to fit half the car in.
Anyway - fitting was piss easy so there on now, came with the 'saxperience' stickers aswell btw ;) :y:
They need a wash btw but its p*ssin down so will do it when the weather is dry.

Had me fooled anyway mate.
Right, well i thought i'd pop the bonnet up today and give the engine bay a clean. I knew that it want in that good a condition but thought i would give it a bit of a clean.
I didnt realise how much needed doing - i gave the rocker cover a bit of a a clean and some other bits. But i want it looking reasonable - and reasonable is not the word for it at the moment.
What do you reckon i should do about it guys. Want to fit an induction kit some time. But the rust needs to go :panic: :panic:

Get a nice degreaser, a toothbrush, a hose pipe and scrub like hell!
what about all the tusty bits? - i was thinking about taking the bits that come off out, getting a wire brush head on a drill, remove all rust and then paint with hamerite or something?
Thats one dirty engine bay mate
Indeed - i want to do something about it lol. It still runs fine but really needs a good clean, but its kinda beyond cleanable in some areas.

Man thats dirty, good opportunity for some before and clean afters.
hmmm yea. I will invest in a new rocker cover and other covers to tidy it up a bit. then just clean the hell out of it.
Ideally - the engine needs to come out. But i aint arsed doing all that really. Will just spend a week on it say and it should be looking ok by then
ChrisJ
18th May 2007, 12:13
If you want to do a proper job of removing the rust, ideally, you would need to remove the engine, sand all the rust down, and then hammerite the whole bay tbh. It's a lot of work though.

UPDATE
Well.........in the end, I didnt bother buying a new car :P. Weighed the situation and just wasnt worth it as the age i am i cant really afford the insurance on anything bigger tbh. I mean there wasnt really much point me getting a 1.1 as the difference would be hardly anything.
So anyway.........I bought a few things for it. Angel eyes etc. Left it and then though lets get some alloys. After having a good look around, went on ebay etc there wasnt really anything in 'amazing' condition. So i bought some new ones from Evolution R up in Durham. Well.....they said '2 weeks and you'll have them mate'. So the money went out my account and i waited and waited etc. But after a long waited 5 weeks I got them this morning. Sealed them up and that and was going to fit them. Then my 'Shitroen' wheel wrench thing to get the nuts off snapped :n: :P. Im just too strong you see :A:. So will go and get one later from Halfrauds.
Pics of Alloys:

UPDATE
Fitted the alloys 30 mins ago. Fronts are fine - no rubbing at all. The back is rubbing very slightly on the rear suspension arm thing (where the arm comes out for the brakes). Its the inside lip of the tyre (probably like 0.1-0.2mm in it. Been for a drive, cant hear anything though so just going to drive to 6th form and back - only like 6 miles until my spacers come. Should be here Thursday. They look nicceeeee though. Very happy with them.

ANOTHER UPDATE
Well.....got woken up today by the pgone going (6:30am) - it was my dad saying that one of the tyres on the back was flat :homme:. When we were fitting them one was 'flatter' than the rest but though it might of just been under-inflated so pumped it back up and seemed to be ok.
So anyway.....got up, took the alloys off and put the steelies back on. Was like an F1 Pit Stop :p. Took the alloy with me to college and nipped to the ATS garage at lunch. Guy had a look at it, couldnt find anything obvious, dipped it in water and there was quite a big air leak.
He said he would break the seal where it was and then found a chunk of CARDBOARD!!!! Like 1/4 of an A4 sheet. Got it out, sealed it back up. Guy did it for free :y:. Happy now however that was really weird.
Just have to wait for my spacers to come now :A: :y:

Having trouble deciding on a system or just a backbox. I know im definately going with an 'Ashley' whatever but not sure. Dont know if i want the hassle of changing it over for MOT time. Read in some places that it can void your insurance but i dont think that is right is it?
I mean theres £40 more for the system - but then the hassle of changing it over. If you got pulled with a straight system on could there be a problem there or not? I know quite a few people have them but not sure :p
Cheers

love the new alloys harv:y: a full system will sound nicer and a better note than a backbox, aslong as the full system still has the cat in the exhaust you will be fine for an mot.

Well another update:
Bought an Ashley Cat Back for it and fitted it last thursday. Sounds much better now and look pretty good. Went for the 3" tail pipe after a long hard think about getting the 2 1/4" tail pipe - however this one was much more expensive.
Only thing is though is that it stick out a little too far maybe - not sure if its supposed to sit like that though. It also hangs a little low....as I have a flat arched saxo, there isnt an exhaust semi-cirlce thing cut out in the bumper so just hangs around 1cm under the bumper. Looks good from up close but backbox hangs a little low from far away. Is it just a case of getting better rubber mounts and cutting the bumper away to look like a VT* bumper?
Will get pics tomorrow as its a little dark now :P.

Well today I had a little photoshoot kind of thing that I needed to do for Media. So off we went.....ended up at Deeside Insustrial Estate as there is some nice places to take some photos.
The car is absolutely FILTHY BTW! I washed it on friday aswell :n: :homme:. The roads have gone really dusty around here with the dry weather and that.
Im afraid the wipers havnt gone yet - keep forgetting and havnt got around to it :y:. They will be gone soon I should think ;)
Anyway...

Yea it looks smart. When the guy lowered it to the floor off the ramps I had a huge smile on my face :P. Was like Chrsitmas all over again :homme:.
I used -50mm Spax Springs (people say they arn't the best but a 1.0 dosen't exactly fly and I'm not bothered on handling). They cost £60 delivered. I was intending to fit the springs myself but didn't have the time tbh. Had all the tools as well :panic:. Got it lowered at the garage I use....lad who owns it loves renaults and is good with french cars :y:. Cost me £140 for the front and back. But that was with a new back bearing which cost £30. So labour was basically £110. Pretty good for round here :y: :y:

Its fine mate. As some people say 'spax is pretty bouncy' which is probably right as it does bounce a little. Makes the ride better IMO though as its not too stiff. It handles much better and looks it. Very, very happy with it at the moment. Takes a bit of getting used to...like not going up curbs etc (school car parking), and trying not to reverse to far into a bay lol.
It all good at the moment though. Not too sure what to do next :geek:

Well....its stopped doing it all of a sudden. I took the exhaust off, changed all gaskets and took the manifold off. Gave them all a clean and re-sealed everything. Exhaust sits nice and actually sounds sealed for once. Seems to have stopped the problem. Its running smooth again now ;).

Cheers matey. I'd go for white wheels mate even though there a b*stard to clean. Look good on darker coloured cars. And yes....they've grown in popularity but there still reasonably rare and different IMO. Well round here anyway. Its lowered on spax springs (-50mm) and 45mm on the rear. Doesn't rub what so ever so its all good. People say spax are rubbish but I mean your not going to use a good suspension setup on a 1.0 are you (unless your track mad).

Cheers bud. Yea the keys were still in it lol. And to top it off......my battery decided to go flat whilst in there. So I had to push it at least 20m and turning it aswell to get it to the ramp. Then jumped in it and bump started it as I was going down the slope. Looked like a right t*at and a pikey to say the least. Got some funny looks lmao.
And its opposite Piccolino's (restuarant). By the shop 'Pier' and Habitat. Infact....its behind Habitat. Down that road on the right and there is a car park which you go into like a shed to pay the man. Anyway....the outbuilding thing I took the pics in is part of that lol.

Looks its had a clean
Right, I know its not an update but as people have kept on saying 'It needs a clean' I thought....'hmmm, why not'. Nipped to the shops and bought some stuff. Only wanted to spend £20 and did just that ;). Got some new wheel cleaner (autoglym range was doing a 100% free bottle of the stuff). So paid £6 for 1 litre of the stuff. Then got some Turtle Wax Nano Tyre Gel, a wash mitt, and a small microfibre cloth.
Dsh's thread in the detailing section said that the TT owners raved over adding a cap of Johnsons Baby Oil to the wash mix. Was good until I noticed oil marks all over the drive :wall: :P. Oh well sorted it out.
Pics of it clean for once (I couldn't be bothered dressing the trim today - will do it tomorrow):

I will get some pics tomorrow. Nah there is plenty of room between the tyres and the flaps. Just the mudflaps are quite close to the floor lol. I've got ones for the back as well but there a little bit tricky to fit as the back bumper doesn't have a solid fixing. I also gave the alloys a good clean when they were off the car lol.
So at the moment, the car is absolutely filthy (would give people a heart attack on here) with bright white alloys lol. Looks quite good ;)

Cheers mate. I want to come as well, can't ditch a good mate though to go to a car show compared to his 18th B'day lol. Oh well....I will see how it goes.
Petrol cap will be going I think if I can find the old one, its a tw*t using different keys as well, plus if I lost the key i wouldn't be able to fill up ever again lmao.
You don't need different keys, just take the key barrel off the petrol cap you got now.
I like that a lot mate, cant fault anything on it tbh. Good job. :y:
Thanks mate ;).
I like it too.. Nice work :y:
Cheers mate :y:

Haha yea, looks a whole lot better with them off. I quite like the mudflaps tbh, I had them all round for a while although they looked a little strange, one got ripped off so just thought I would take the other one off lol. Front ones are good though :y:.

Thanks mate. Yea there quite good really, I like them alot. If you need the place I bought them from I will try and find it for you (if I can remember) lol :fcuk:

Erm, i'm after something a little faster and I can get cheaper insurance now. Looking at 1.4 furio or even a VTS :y:

Guessing you've just got your first years no claims :y: Hell of a difference in price between the 1.4 and the VTS, what sort of price is the insurance for a VTR? And how much you looking at spending?

No mate, No No claims. Just done a couple of quotes, for a VTS its £1000 tfpt as a named driver. And as a furio or westy its £600-£800. Found a few nice VTS's around the £1500 mark.
Will just have to wait and see if mine sells soon

fair enough mate, just be careful with being a named driver. They're tackling down on it now and foolishly I bought this sax with me being a named driver however I want my own No claims so I'm paying excactly the same this year as I would of done last year but in my own name :y:
:wall::wall::wall:. Grrrrr, don't even know if I can sell this f*cking car. I know I will miss it too much and from looking at cars, I can't afford a decent VTR or VTS in good condition. Geez man, its fooking annoying. First car as well - still makes me smile when I see it :n:.

Haha yea, its not the fact I don't want to sell it its just that if I was to sell then I wouldn't be able to afford anything better as i'm still doing A-levels and live off an 8 hour a week job which i do get good money for but still...... The saxo is pretty much staying I think. Got some more plans for it as I will be keeping it for another year or so :fcuk:.

It already is lowered mate :P. -50mm on the front and -40mm on the back. Doubt I will include the fogs if I VT kit as I find them pointless and there too much messing around lol.

Agreed. Just need to get some dollar together now :y:
Painted the underneath of the car today as it was pretty rusty and horrible. Need to give it another coat and spend some more time on the tricker areas (rear arms etc).

Little bit of an update
Today, I decided to give the car a wash, and give the wheels a good wash also. Normally I clean them with soap and water but the build up this time was way too tough so had to resort to AG Wheel Cleaner. I don't normally like using this stuff as it seems quite abrasive but it worked (ish).
Anyway...havn't got any pics of the car before washing, but just have it a quick clean to tidy it over for a while. The front alloys were really bad from build up of muck, brake dust etc.
This was when I took them off the car:

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa177/Saxo-Harv/DSCF0111Medium.jpg
As you can see, its really mucky:
http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa177/Saxo-Harv/DSCF0112Medium.jpg
Anyway.....after a good clean, hose down, sealed using AG Wheel Sealant, tyres dressed with Megs Hot Tyres they looked like this. Oh, I also got a tyre pen to suit the white theme and it looks rather good imo.
I know people say it only looks good with good tyres, but there isn't much point in having proxes, R888's etc. on a car that never goes around a track and barely reaches 70 :P. I want something different, and I like it - its supposed to last a couple of months as well, even with washing :y:.

Few mods, and it looks awesome.
IMO keep that for a while, GTI interior maybe? Don't colour code it... but get some Trim Restorer gel on it.. Poorboys is the way to go with that, or megs.
Mk2 rears would fresh the car up a bit for pennies really!
Really nice car as i've said mate, will come up soon to meet you and a cuppa!

Yea, maybe on the interior. I'm after something anyway! I normally use trim restorer however it doesn't work as the actual plastic has faded and there is not way that you can make it black again. I've tried everything :wall:.

Yea it is looking good I must admit :P. Really liking the look of it now it just needs to be faster lol. VTR engine is an option though, can't really do a VTS lump conversion as insurance would kill me. Had a nice big bonus from work today , so will try and save a fair amount then either VTR engine or buy a vtr :y:.

Bit of News
Well its D-Day tomorrow, MOT time :n: haha. Hope to god it passes, if it does its staying, even though it will probably stay anyway as insurance is :homme: on better cars.
Just gave it a good clean inside and out (not bothering taking pictures of it as the same as it was). I also fixed the leaking manifold to downpipe joint with some firegum. Sounds so much better now and is much more responsive. Got a few plans for it and parts will be ordered for it if it passes tomorrow :y:.
Parts to buy and fit will be:
1) Raceland 4-2-1 manifold and heatwrap.
2) Lower strut brace.
3) Compbrake Quickshift.
4) Raceland induction kit with green filter.
5) Decat pipe.
That should all be ordered tomorrow if it passes :y:. Every think is checked and seems to be running sweet. Standard backbox is back on as well. May even decide to strip it and purchase a pair of buckets as well. Extra hours FTW!
Wish it luck tomorrow :p.

The wheels really do suit the flat arch, and suit your car awesomely. I wish I had bought them when i had the chance :n:
I've just been browsing manifolds too, going after Snewhams old setup:
Supersprint 4-2-1 manifold
Supersprint *race* centre section

What are you looking at for the 1.0 all together? :y:

Gave the engine a clean today as it was really bad. I don't think its ever had a clean in the 9 years its been around lol. So I got the toothbrushes out and AG degreaser and started, I wasn't planning spending all day on getting every piece perfect.
But lets be honest, a VTS is alot easier to get looking clean as most of the engine bay is taken up with covers etc compared to seeing most of the floor in the 1.0 and therefore seeing rust etc lmao.
I blacked the plastics using AG bumper care and degreased under the bonnet aswell as it was filthy.

I'd say just plain Anthracite wheels would look really nice, it's come on a long way :y:
Don't forget to do your badges the same though ;) or debadge!

Yeah now thats what I was thinking and have told other people. I know about the badges as that would look real shit haha. Its a hard decision but white are too hard to keep clean really.

Not sure with the red rim yet. Maybe the lip is too big on the chops im not sure.
And yea, i've probably spent 2 or 3 times the amount I bought it for quite easily. Its worth it though as it makes me smile when I drive it :P.

If you're struggling with the white, I think that black with the white/silver rim looks ace on your car and would look great if you went down the euro look.
As for red with white wheels take a look at the chops in my progress matey ;)

I've done another chop but with anthracite and it does look good I must admit. I like the white, but they turn grey after a couple of trips to work :homme:. And im not really into cleaning it 24/7.

Unsure =\ It looks good, but i've seen some lips on here that look mint, see them in real life, they don't look so good and slightly tacky.. So i don't know really.
I think Gunmetal grey\dark blue theme is brill! Looks sexual.

Anthracite with white lip looks awesome! I'd go for that one, but tbh i think they look spot on in white.

Cheers for comments guys.
Well the white alloys......don't say keep them unless you've tried them. Honest to god, there so hard to keep clean. I also don't like cleaning the car every day and limit it to at 2 cleans a month max. I can say, that after a 5 minute trip, the alloys will be caked in dirt again :homme: lol.
I agree they look good in white but keeping them clean is so hard.

Will do mate although it sounds pretty much the same. Just a little more 'throaty' and pops when i let off the accelerator. Hopefully will decat it soon as I like the sound of pops and bangs haha. The exhaust itself is mega loud now though as flat arches don't have silencers lmao.

Still deciding. I may just refurb them white again :y:.

Its done now......lol....
Anyway, the time has come I need to make up my mind what colour. I was thinking about an antracite centre fading to white around the edges. Basically a gradient. Still not sure if I should stay white though as its getting common round here now :homme:.

That would look new and interesting Harv, and if you want to be different go for that. However I do love the white, and I'm worried the new idea may look like the wheels are dirty in the centre but not elsewhere? :ponder:

Something like this (chop isn't the best but..):

Still unsure about the whole thing. 4 people from college have white alloys now the twats, just copied me :n:. So i'm after something a bit different now like a lip or gradient or something. Its a hard decision haha :homme:. Hmmmmmmm.....

Seeing as I'm still deciding on what colour to refurb the alloys. I've just bought a flocked dash for £40 :P. Full dash as well. Going to pick it up later this evening if all goes to plan. Woooo!!
