View Full Version : ABS problem
I noticed the ABS light on the dash for the first time yesterday.
I've taken the two front ABS sensors off and given them a good clean as they were absolutely filthy, I can't believe they could have been working with so much crap on them...
Anyhow, I've taken the car for a quick spin, and the light hasn't come off! :(
Thinking back now, I remember that everytime I've taken the car on a rolling road, the same light comes on while you're on the rollers, but soon comes off afterwards. So, this made me think that there must be some sensor on the rear wheels that detects movement, or there's no other way a rolling road would make the light come on. Can anyone please help me figure this one out!?
Cheers!
I've now noticed that my ABS is definately not functioning. I locked the brakes up really easily.
I also notice a strange noise when I gently brake and turn left. A similar noise to when you use your indicators, but it's more frequent, about 3 times as fast, and last for about 2 seconds. Any ideas?

sorry mate, no idea, might be worth taking it to a garage and them putting the scanner on it, that will tell you whats wrong, most good garages have one.
good luck and i hope its nothing serious
Just to add... I didn't realise there are the same sensors on the rear as on the front. I gave both of them a good clean, alas, still no joy.
I plugged in my diagnostic tool, but it didn't bring up anything to do with the ABS. I guess the falt code reader only picks up stuff that turns on the engine check light.

It was only Citroen I could find that could pick up abs problems so you could try them it will tell you which ones broken. I had the diagnosis and said the front right sensor was broken so I replaced it and the light was still on!?? Does it need resetting somehow?
What exactly did you get with the purchase? When I took the front sensors out for cleaning, I found they were still contained in a cast iron shell, and I couldn't prize them out at all. Not that I needed to, as I could still clean them...
I don't mean the outter casing that you take off first by the way.

So what about the rear sensors then?
Just because you cleaned them up doesnt mean they will start working again, its usualy an internal fault or a broken wire. I had one go down not so long ago aswell, needed a new one. When you buy a new one you get the sensor and the wire with the connector. Also the only way you will find out what sensor it is, is by taking to citroen and getting the proper diag equipment on it
Hope thats helped :y:

Did you have to reset it or anything?? or does the light just go off by itself? you will probs have to smash them to get them out so I wouldn’t try unless you have a replacement

The light should go off when its fixed. When the light was on mine, it actually went out one night but came back on 10 mins later. When its taken to a dealer they will erase the fault, thats it. But as i said if the problem is fixed is should go out on its own
Maybe you got another one gone down?

Just see this, so what one did you replace?
Front right sensor will be drivers side

yeah the drivers side. cost me £67 from citroen
Thanks Dan.
My concern about what you get from the dealership is because of how the sensors are currently fitted. I found when I took the front sensors out, they still had some cast iron around them. I can't see how they come out of this. Also, the rear sensors seemed completely molded into the actual caliper. I couldn't even get them out.
