Just wait for a while, it should dry out and start again, well depending how much water went in i suppose.

I was in the works van yesterday and the same thing happened to me, i got it towed out the puddle, waited half an hour or so and it was fine.

best thing to do would drop the oil out and put fresh in then take the plugs out and try and turn it over. if there is water sat on the pistons this can lock the engine up.

If there has been a large amount of water sucked in then it is possible that you have bent your con-rods, dont know how many but this would explain the non turning over. It tends to happen when a engine 'hydraulics' cant see how water got into the oil though

ok a update on my car:
I took out the spark plugs and turned it over,a mixture of fuel and water came flying out where the plugs sit, kept turning it over till it was all out.i then put the plugs and the coil pack back on and started it up,the whole car shakes and theres a really loud tapping/rattling noise coming from the engine block, the exhasut smokes really bad white smoke aswell, there was also water coming out of a seal on the bottom of the engine, but that seems 2 have stopped now,am i right in thinking that iv probably blown the head gasket?and bent a valve or 2 due 2 hydrolocking the engine?is any1 a mechanic on here and can offer me some advice?

well the white smoke would probably because the waters go into the oil and is being turned into condensation and chucked out the exhaust, dunno about the other problems tho

if the engines knocking mate it could be your bottom end and if it is you might aswell start saving for a new engine unless u no some1 who will do it on the cheap cos my m8 did it 2 weeks ago and fucked his bottom end, luckily his gfs dads mechanic sorted him out.

the tapping could be the tappets but as for the rest if you've brown your bottom end then it will probably work out cheaper to get a new engine rather than getting and fitting a new bottom end

hmm. they showed an old merc on one of the car shows not too far back which they filled up with water. After some drying out it did what your is doing now.
You probably have not changed anything so far with the engine apart from sucked water in- however as said earlier 2 bad things- 1 the water can stifle the movement of valves- thus bending them which sounds like so far they have not damaged a piston- so you might be lucky in a way. The other thing is with this water around and the compression involved with water then you can damage your head gasket.

First- change your oil and oil filter. This will be cheap and you can see if it clears the problem. If it does run slightly happier after this then let it run for a while. With luck the clanking is due to the inefficient movement of tappets due to water contamination. Leave it running in the drive and make yourself a cup of tea... by doing this and coming back you will hear if the noise is clearing gradually (after draining an engine for a head gasket it can take a while for the tappets to clear up and is really really noisy- standing there you cant hear that the noise is SLOWLY going- this is why i am suggesting going away and coming back).

Ok- so it might be more than struggling tappets- however if it clears (and give it 20 mins idling) then you have avoided a massive garage bill. if it doesnt clear then maybe it will need some serious work....

Back to the tappet thing- i took apart a porsche 944s engine a while back and it was in bits for a few weeks. On replacing eveything the noise was 'F**king terible' but it ws just as the tappets were recharging with oil. -So do your oil change and let it run, it could sort it right out. The answer for 'bottom end' i dont really buy. As there was a long gap before restarting then you may have got away without bent rods. The oil contamination would give 'bad oil' to things like tappets which would likely result in the clanging- so keep your fingers crossed and good luck!
