heres my problem, when the cars running there is like a whinning/grinding noise coming from the box. when the clutch is pressed in it stops. is this the clutch thats fooked or the box?
along with this is the grinding/clucking noise when i set off fast or set off up a hill (when the engine is under alot of force/pressure)?
any ideas?

sounds like release bearing mate, but then as ya go on about the gearbox, it seems it could be the gearbox (and/or) as ya know mine was knackered, the release bearing had come off the spindle (which was fooked) so the oil was leaking from there, which soaked the clutch in gear oil, rendering it pretty much useless! the syptoms of this were, whining release bearing, then as i set off there was a real loud whine from the gearbox then it would grind until i changed gear, and of course the slipping clutch! but got new clutch a gearbox all fitted for...£150!! (sorry for the essay!!!) :y:

If its your thrust bearing it will whine when you press the clutch in

it whined on mine when it wasnt pressed, and my bearing was totally knackered.

its not the clutch bearing then as it only makes a noise when the clutch is out

so did mine and it was the bearing, as well as the plate being worn and bearings falling out all over the place! lol (that was the first clutch im now on my third)

First port of call is your thrust bearing mate, i've had the same sounding problem for a long time and never had time to sort it. I thought it was the box untill recently i read something about it which has convinced me its the release bearing, i'll see if i can find the quote.
Yeh, thats the way i understood that it worked too but i was told differently by the mechanic diagnosing it (seems like he wanted me to get a new gearbox from him;)), i've done a bit of digging and i take back all that i said about it being the gearbox.
The basic symptom of a clutch release / throwout bearing going is a rumbling noise while the clutch is engaged - Source (http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch2.htm)

take the box off and you will see what the problem is
, my guess is the bearing mine did the same as yours on my vtr engine when i removed the box the bearing was destroyed lol,
i just so happen to have a brand new clutch kit for a vtr and a vtr box ;)

The clutch is engaged when you dont touch the pedal. Pushing the pedal to the floor disengages it.
The english language & the nature of the clutch makes it really awkward to talk about unless we dumb it down to describing the physical position of the pedal

I have similar issues. Probably gonna source a new clutch and a 1.1 box. You get a big whiiiiiirrr when pulling away?

yeah, engaged is obviously when the clutch is out, thus engaging allowing you to drive, and if its disengaged its no long touching plate, allowing you to change gear. LOL, there always seems to be a big confusion when it comes to clutches!
