View Full Version : Sub Not Working - Anyone know why?

Ive got a JBL 500 watt sub. Nothing BOOM BOOM but I noticed it didnt sound very bassy last night and its been like it for a while, just didnt pick up on it. I found the sub isnt working at all.

The power light is on
The earth is connected to the seat bracket
The L and R wires are connected to the amp

Has my sub blown? Would I know about it straight away if it had blown?

Any techniques to try as a process of elimination?

Ive checked the wiring that I can get to and couldnt find any problems.

check the inline fuse thats on your power cable rfom the battery mate

Also go over all the wiring yourself again mate

Was it working before

try softly pushing the sub cone when its supposed to be working and see if it starts.

If it does then the sub is fecked I'm afraid. Same happened to mines a while back.

I checked the red power wire fuse near the battery and it looks ok.

It was working fine about a month ago.

The sub is enclosed in the box.

I was doing some thinking - wouldnt the sub have some sort of bass even if it was blown?

Yeah the earth looks fine but ill double check in a sec.

Theres a light on the amp and the sub which says there is power.

Would the power light still come on if the earth wasnt working?

Nope the cone is inside a box with a small opening at the bottom

I cant picture how that would look mate. Is it a bass box as opposed to a sub in a box?

Me mates sub blew yesterday.. He's got the bass box like yours. And all smoke was coming out from the holes on the bottom of the box.

Stupid of him, didn't disconnect the power cable when i was unscrewing the wires on the amp.. Sparks nearly ad my eye out :panic:

checked the fuses on the amp??

best thing you can do is take it all out give everything a check over, when mine did it before, first ever sub it was, i connected it to my home stereo on a low volume just to see if the cone still moved, then when it was all back in it was fine, could just be a dodgy wire somewere mate, you may think the look ok but pull on the connectors as it may have become loose, make sure where its earthed is on bare metal too

yeah as pred said mate, check everything over again and ensure the earth and other cables are all good

Disconnect the negative aswell ;)
