View Full Version : What to do.. sell the sax or not?

Right..
Basically, I like my car, but was kinda thinking of other people when i decided that it wasn't practical for the work run.. 40 miles a day with 4 people.
Its lowered so isn't overly comfortable, however there's 4 of us, so the driving is now only 1 week a month.

The plan was, sell the sax for as much as i could get - Pay the credit card off £1400 (Full).
Buy my mates P reg Diesel mondeo for £100, get the clutch done, £250 and MOT it, needs tires and should go straight through with minor things needing doing.

Then, the money i save each month on the card would go into the savings account, towards a car.

I have a lot of fun in the sax, and have done lots of work to it, not just mods, but mechanical, ie new engine due to headgasket, driveshafts, clutch and loads more...

I'm not sure what i want to do.
Its being sprayed back to its former glory, including colour coded bumpers etc this week, should be on the road by friday, and i think its going to look the part.

What should i do?
I was really thinking of the other guys when i thought about changing it, as in the long run the diesel wouldn't be any cheaper to run, dearer tax, dearer insurance (Not declared my mods yet though...)

What do you guys reckon?
I've had massive diesel cars before and not had a problem, so thats not an issue... i'm only 17 though! 18 in august!...

Just not sure!
Think i need a boot in the right direction.. whats the right thing to do guys?

Save for a new car and drive an old mondeo for a while...
OR
Keep my car, get it paid, keep mine as long as it lasts, or until i find a good deal on a car on finance, or loan, or with money saved up once i've got some driving experience...

I'd miss the sax, and i wouldn't miss the sax in other ways.

Kick in the right direction please guys!
David

p.s - Probably a really pointless thread, pretty sure i know what the majority are going to say!

what do you think???

tough one that. depends how good you are at saving?

id go for the mondeo thing basically cos i like change, and it would be a good challenge to get the money saved up andddd paying the credit card off will be a big load off your shoulders.

Seems a bit daft to spend all that money getting it up to scrath then shifting it. My Furio was quite goot on petrol, surely it can't be costing that much if you're only doing it 1 week out of the month.

If you do end up getting the diesel I can almost guarantee that within 4 months you'll be posting pics of your new Saxo ;)

Thats the thing, i don't know.
I love my saxo, it still does 39 MPG how i drive it, Its got potential to be changed into a faster one next time the headgasket goes, as no doubt it will, be it 10, 20, 30k down the line.

I know for a fact, that i won't ever buy another saxo after this one.
WHen its gone its gone! I've had a lot of trouble over time, and its still going on, got a leaky brake hose on the back as we speak, the brakes are shite and so on, but i love it, just wish ABS was an option.

Really think i'm gonna appreciate it even more when its done...
I'm not a great saver, however i do have a tendancy to spend money on the saxo a lot, where if i had the mondeo i wouldn't.

Seriously considering keeping it though, why should I change it for other people?
I've a reputation for changing cars anyway, infact this is the longest i've had a car, since 2nd feb! lol 5 months now!

Think i've made my mind up anyway, just waiting to see the spray job results, and I think that'll tell me, feels like a real project.

If i keep it, I might even Re-MOT it next month so i get my engineers report stamped, unless anyone on here can do it cheaply?

Need my mods declared on the insurance is the only problem, and with a claim against me (Hence the blue wing, i'd had the car 5 days.. ice! :(), i'm not sure what its going to do, come 18th birthday and insurance renewal (Same date)... Any good insurance companies for people in my situation to help twist my arm?

Help!
David

My future Brother-In-Law (hopefully) who posts on here, once had a Corsa 1.8 Sri but when he moved in with his Girlfriend, purely for financial reasons, he sold it and bought a Mondeo.

He sold it within months and bought a Vts and hasn't looked back since.

Keep the Saxo - the Mondeo will bore the tits off you.

i did sort of what ur saying

sell the sax and get a cheap run around, made driving so much funner cause i didnt care one bit about the car i loved it. But it was a piece of shit and was slow.

i would say no mate to be honest saxos are great little cars

Yeah i think i'm 90% on keeping it now.
Only problem i have, is that it is plain fucking slow along beckington dual carrageway (SP) with 4 of us in it, bit worried about damaging something or straining something? otherwise, its their tough shit about being in the back.. used to drive every other week, then 1 in 3.. now its 1 in 4, so hopefully the mileage slows a little... i've done 10k since i bought it on 2nd Feb... its on 96k now!

Well i think i know what i'm most likely to do now...
Thanks for the advice so far guys :)

Thats what we do, lift share.
We all drive 1 week a month, and split the parking 4 ways.
Works out £50 a month each.
More than happy doing my fair share of the driving, just makes the car slow, don't wanna brake anything... saxo's aren't the best built cars out there thats for sure!

Yeah think i'll just have to go easy with the lads in.
They can't be that heavy, but the car just feels plain slow with 4 of us!
Cheers

Nice one mate, I couldnt have said it better!! :clapping:

I'm the future brother in law in question and the mondeo I had was soooooo boring!! I was trying to be 'captain sensible' at the time but i missed having a quick little car 10x more than i thought i would.

It all worked out in the end though because i ended up in a VTS ;)
