Im 17 and have my test on the 30th july and am hopeing to pass, Ive looked at insurance with Quinn for the saxo furio and it will be £1,747.00 3rd party and the saxo vtr would be £2,011.00 3rd party.

What im wondering is as the vtr's seem quite abit cheaper buying one but more on insurance it should work out cheaper than getting a furio, would a cheap vtr with say around 70k miles mean its had a bad life not well looked after and ragged everywhere? or are they really strong cars and even if they have been ragged everywhere it would be safe buying one?

Any advice welcome please

Thanks

depends on how old it is really, shouldnt be that bad at 70k, who you buying it off? do they look the sort that would have ragged it?

Yer i will learn lol
ive just been looking on autotrader for cars havnt actully looked at any yet im waiting untill i pass to go round looking at them because dont want to get my hopes up and not be able to test drive it lol
What i was thinking is if i got a furio and it had been ragged as its a 1.4 might not have much left in it but if i got a vtr and it had been ragged would still be quite nippy as its a bigger engin.

Strong cars? Nope

My advice would be to get the 1.4 until you have some road sense (and thats not me having a dig) The VTR is quite nippy and wouldnt want you getting into trouble.

i agree...i had the 1.1 SX for around 5 months after my test to become more confident on the road with driving, left it as standard so i could sell it on. i then bought a WestCoast (pre-99 furio(phase1)) which i have now and i love, i'd go for the cheaper insurance just incase anything happens, then when your older and more experienced, go for the VTR/VTS. thats what i'm going to do after uni :)

most saxo's will have been ragged im afraid... except mine.

I'd take a furio over a VTR anyday... great cars... citroen smacked it on that.

maybe ill be really lucky and find one not ragged are there any clues you can look for on the car and be able to tell if it has?

Hazza17

look out for anything you would do on any other car. especially on smaller stereotypical "boy-racer" cars like the saxo just listen to the engine and check exhaust fumes. if you hear tapping noises or any unusual noises then step away from the car lol

if everythings fine just check bodywork, panel alleignment, wear and tear, brakes etc etc! try and stay away from cars that have been resprayed in various places. this usually means accident damage!

then check docments, reciepts and all the boring stuff lol

i know kelly... i know...

maybe ill be really lucky and find one not ragged are there any clues you can look for on the car and be able to tell if it has? not really a lot that can be done to be honest... Although I look for sign of love and affection at services... I would want to know the make and type of engine oil used. Fully Synthetic Only - non of this Magnetec pap :)

On the test drive let the owner take you for a drive. If (s)he decides to open it up on a cold engine, just walk away. ask what sort of runs the driver does in the car, short shop/work type of journeys, you guessed it, walk away. Motorway driving is more favourable.
I wouldnt take buy a saxo that looks like it been owned by anyone under 30.

the tapping sound is a very good indicaction that the car has been driven hard and that the engine is worn. the louder/more obvious the noises from the engine, the more its worn. saxos can last very well if looked after and driven slow :)

With those insurance prices I personally wouldn't get either for now. You will be paying £1700-2000 for a policy that if you were to hit someone else you wouldn't get a penny towards the cost of your own car. But that is up to you

I wouldn't be put off by mileage too much because if it has been looked after and they are motorway miles you shouldn't have a problem. Plus you'll find a lot of higher mileage cars that run better than lower mileage ones that have been ragged around housing estates. I wouldn't be put off by a young owner either. I got mine when I was 18 and I've not ragged it around. It's a VTR, it's not fast, there's no point lol :p

dont get a vtr, get the furio, they are basically the same, shop round for some more quotes too 1700 isnt worth paying for thirdparty,, my advice.

i was looking for a vtr aswel, but ended up getting a furio. tbh, i would defo go for a furio, it would be cheaper so you wil get more car for your mony, tax and insurance will defo be cheaper, and this will allow you to spend more on the car. plus it looks like a vtr/vts, even if it doesnt "go" like one.

you also have to take into account insurance and tax next year and the year after etc. you might be able to afford them on a vtr now, but something might happen during the year and you might not be able to afford it next year.

and if youre buying a furio, i would defo look into hazza's one, it looks to be in great condition and looks well aswel

saxo 8v engines tap anyway, the tappets arnt self adjusting. you wana watch out for oil in the water and water in the oil and if theres any knocking sounds.

im 17 and ive got a vtr, i dont think its too much for a first car it depends on what sort of person you are wether you will drive stupidly or sensibly. you should test drive a furio and a vtr when you pass to see what you prefer.

hey buddy, i dont know if this has worked for anyone else but i have a vtr and i am 17. i havent passed my test yet so decided to get insured on provisional license with quinn direct. Before i was having similar quotes as yours like £2000+ with tpft. anyway, rang them up and they did a quote for me on provisional license..£1189.77 on tpft!! and they said that it dosent go up when i pass my test! saving of £800:y: try ringing them up and see what they say for you

Hey and welcome BTW mate :y:

Id say Furio for you due to insurance and the reasons above
If you feel that you can handle/want a VTR and the insurance doesnt bend you over than go for it

Look out for noises, signs, read the FSH and give the car a good check over if your not sure about anything or the car doesnt feel right, walk away

Sayer pretty much said it, if it aint right dont buy it, rule of thumb look for low mileage and overall condition. Good luck with your test and new car mate :A:

alryt mate im 17 and have my test on 1st august and i got my vtr about 3 weeks ago, got the old l plates on it and i love it lol its done 60k and in great condition, on my dads insurance fully comp protected no claims tis 880 provisionally i think and drops to 840ish when i pass. I dont think its too fat for a first car, as long as u drive responsibly :P
