ah thats shite aint it, all depends how much your willing to pay mate and how much u want it, there are some on autotrader for like 800 quid then some for £2000 i would pay more than a grand my self unless it was mint or a williams. there at least 10yr old and most likely used and abused.

go on autotrader select mileage national and search for 1.8 16vs n see what the others go for thats the only way to see how muchyou should be paying, as for worrying about it been hammered just check it over, thats like saying a vts has been hammered, just check it over fully, but i do no the 1.8 16vs cost a fortune to fix any engine probs as they are so small and such a hassle most mecs dont like em n certainly dont do em cheap
