Well my car has been leaking an oily liquid and from where i can see it looks to be coming from the gearbox. Will get a pic up tomorrow as its too late now. Could it simple be that the bolts around the bottom of the gearbox just need tightening as they have come loose. My dads mate told me that the oil sump bolts need tightening as he thinks that oil may be leaking very slightly and the bolts can come loose over a long period of time. If it tightened the gearbox and re-fill it would that do the trick?

Here are some pics of my dirty oily underneath, with apic of my oil sump that maybe leaking slightly. I have also tightened up the bolts as they could be done up tighter they seemed reasonably loose but didnt want to overtighten them so i just went along one by one tightening them quarter turn then just a little bit the second time round.

Mine was exactly the same problem- mine gearbox got noisy, a refill sorted it out for the time being. Tighteneing didnt sort it out. Sent to local mechanic- he changed a drive shaft seal i think?? Dont let it leak without filling it up, its quite easy to do so not worth losing a gearbox over!! By the looks of your pic though could be your sump leaking or even that oil filter then running further back down the car.

Its the oil seal on the gearbox will be sorting that hopefully at the weekened when i change the opposite driveshaft. Tightened up the oil sump as i think that may have leaked a tiny bit. Filled up both oils (3/4 or a ltr of gear oil)

Sorry I missed this thread dood!

The underneath of your car is in a bit of a state eh? Not to worry... It's quite possible that the substance dripping from the bottom of the gearbox is actually engine oil. An easy way to check will be to smell it. Engine oil will have a distinct smell of petrol to it, you'll know what it's like, but the gearbox oil will smell totally different, and not very pleasant either! The reason I'm thinking it's likely to be engine oil, is from looking at the pictures above, the area seems so widespread, it's possible that the oil is just making its way to the gearbox too.

Let us know what you find.

As said have tighted oil sump and filled up so will keep checking and will clean up when i change the drivers driveshaft and replace both oil seals. Will then check to see if anything is leaking then. Cheers guys yer i know know read it :( lol

*EDIT* Has anyone got any pics or a guide on how to take apart the brake slidders as the drivers side is not moving freely if anything. Which i think is going to fasten the brake where and petrol consumption ( every P counts )

Possible rear crankshaft seal if its engine oil as thats very close to the gearbox

This is what i have done and what i think is wrong. I have seen oil drip from the driveshaft so im certain the seal is knackered.

I'd still like to know if we're dealing with one leak or two here. The oil running down the sump could be from the oil filter... Have you tried smelling it yet?

No not yet lol Got a cold at the min so i wouldnt be able to smell anything. I think its coming from around the bolts as they are really oily. will try and take another look tomorrow will take some more pics aswell. How would i know if its coming from the filter or not? Also how tight should i have done the oil sump bolts as i didnt want to over tighten them. Cheers

I couldn't tell you how tight they need to be. As long as you aren't using extensive leverage, you should should be fine not to over do them.

Filters tend to leak, as the rubber gasket it not perfect, and they can become a little loose over time. The filter is right above the bottom of the sump, hence why it could be the cause...

I know where it is a replaced it a few months back. I tried twisting it slightly and it didnt move but i might do another oil change in a month or so. Will tighten them oil sump bolts again as i didnt want to tighten them too much i didnt really use any leverage apart from the ratchet.

tbh mate i think you might more than one leak. if it is gear box oil coming from the driveshaft then how would it get all up the front of the engine. i think your rocker gasket could be looking as mine looked exactly the same but changed it and its crystal now. just a thought:y:

Yer im going to replace that this month aswell. I think its just dirt and rain underthere aswell as just a build up of splattered oil from different places. Cheers

How much and where should i be able to get a pair of oil seals? Have just put some oil in the box to stop it from drieng up also put some leak stop stuff in there untill i change the oil seal. It should only be the oil seal, it wouldnt be the driveshaft? Cant afford two lol.
