480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p HDTV

basically i bought a new TV for xbox360 purposes (32", HD digital LCD) whatever that means and the split screen when playing 2 player used to be horizontal,

now since owning this TV its a vertical split and for us gamer geeks everyone knows you cant play a co-op FPS game with a horizontal split.

anyone know how to change it?

it only seems to have happened on halo 2 (XBox 1 game), works fine on all other games.

my guess is its because halo 2 is a XB1 game not a 360 game?

shed any light?

edit: ive went through all options on halo 2 and the dashboard.

it seems now theres a couple more games that are doing the same.
help me :)

got it sorted, it was the settings, needed to change to 480p for xbox 1 games and 1080i for 360 games

What do 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean?

High definition programs are encoded with a type of resolution: 720p, 1080i or 1080p. The number stands for the amount of lines embedded within the signal. The letter describes the type of scan the television uses to display the picture. The ‘i’ means interlaced and the ‘p’ means progressive.

Why does the amount of lines matter?

The number of lines on a television is important because it allows for greater detail in the image.

This is a similar concept to digital photos and how dpi determines print quality. The type of televisions all of us grew up watching had 480 visible lines on the screen. By doubling the amount of lines in combination with the type of scan, HD essentially doubles the quality of picture.

Was doing training on this at work actually, 1080p is the best as you get a more smooth transition with the pixels. Even 720p is something like 5times better quality than normal tv's.

There will be a negligable difference between 1080 interlaced and 720 progressive. Personally I find 720 a little easier on the eye if you're playing for some time. It's a slightly more natural on screen movement as well compared to 1080i

480p is the standard format for ordinary DVDs and therefore isn't classed as HD. It's hardly 'shitty' especially on a decent TV, just a bit dated.
