Some of the shadow finishes are painted with a black/gold base coat.

same as some resprays i think dude, a lighter base coat is used to bring out the gloss on the final finish

eg candy paint uses a bright base coat like white or a glossy silver

Silver is a bit of bastard as I've found out... the more layers you apply the darker it becomes.

Danny i'd honestlly get them done by a pro man, me and paul tried with my VTS wheels the best we got was the below picture.. That was with me taking a standard vts wheel to a paint place and asking them to colour match it to the best of there ability lol..

At least if you pay a bodyshop to do it there going to strip the paint back what you sprayed on.. saves you a big messy job.

it depends on thebodyshop to weather or not the strip them back some bodyshops will just sand it back smooth and used the paint already on them for the base coat (cheaper and quicker) there are many ways of doing this if you want to do them your self and do a good job best to keep it simple, smooth any ruff edges with wet and dry 400 would be best prime it with a white primer, use a heat gun to dry to speed up process then smooth that back for a really nice finish use 1500 wet and dry paper then spray a couple of coats of colour drying and smoothing down each and then when your happy with the finish do a nice light top coat with colour and move on to laquor same process as the colour im sure you will do fine

dont forget to mask up your wheels lol !!
