I want to get my bike license. After ive done my CBT.
How long does it take and how much is it? And is it difficult?

8th August 2007, 10:44
a cbt is easy, it only take half a day roughly and costs 100 and that includes hire of bike, not too sure about a bike license

Bike license costs and arm and a leg. My dad has done a CBT but that only entitles you to ride a 125 with L plates on ;)

Well you can ride any bike as long as it doesnt exceed 33bhp. So id get a nice 600 and have it restricted as i cant afford to be chopping and changing bikes.....
Sounds like ill be sorting this out soon.

No you can't its goes on the cc etc. MY dad can drive a 125cc and nothing more. If he got caught driving a 225cc even though it only has something like 26bhp he would get the book thrown at him.

Sorry i got confused with this;
Restricted A2
Available to persons 17 years and over who have already completed a CBT and DSA Motorcycle Theory Test.
A DSA practical motorcycle test is undertaken on a machine between 120cc and 125cc with a power output not exceeding 25kw (33bhp).
A rider passing this test is then restricted for a period of two years to ride a machine of any size cubic capacity (cc) provided that it does not exceed 25 kw (33bhp).
After two years the rider is then entitled to ride any type of machine without a further test.

Can't be bothered to read thread, but my dads girlfriend has just paid about 500 odd from start to finish to pass her test.
The A2 licence is best to get, as if your only 18, you can only ride up to a 125cc i think.... Or restrict any motobike to 33BHP.
m_cooke999
8th August 2007, 12:15
UNDER 21's:
you do your CBT which costs about £100 and lasts a day, you can then ride up to a 125cc motorbike... this is not a test...
Then with your CBT you can take your theory test (about £30), which is just like a car one really...
Then with your theory test you can take your practical test, most people require some form of training though which usually lasts for about 3 - 5 days depending on the rider skill and experience... you dont of course NEED to do any training but your chances of passing the test will be seriously reduced...
Most riding schools charge about £350 for 3 days training on a 125cc bike and then your test may or may not be included in this price...
Once you have passsed your practical you are permitted to ride ANY motorcyle that has no more than 33BHP output, but you can ride anything aslong as you restrict it to 33BHP should it need to be... you are on this restriction for 2 years or until you are 21, whichever comes 1st...
then you can ride any motorbike unrestricted
OVER 21's:
you do your CBT i think as above but then you can take a direct access course which is basically the same as the normal practical course and test but afterwards you can ride any power motorbike...

the whole motorbike licence laws revolve around the magic age of 21, under it and once you passed your test u gotta get summt thats 33BHP restricted(restricting it is a whole new kettle of fish, u gotta actually pay £100 which wil be restricted by an aproved garage and you will get your certificate of restriction which your insurer will ask to see)
my 250 came with 33BHP as standard so i dnt need it restricting, but i have put race cans on it, and geared it down so i av much faster acceleration...

Spot on - if you're over 21 go for DAS route - varies from £300-£500. Under 21, it's a bit more of a minefield - but yes, you can have a blike over 33bhp as long as it is restricted to that. The actual price of a test isn't massive, but it is fairly expensive if done as part of a riding scheme.
As previously stated, a CBT allows you to ride up to 125cc with L-plates.

Was kinda hooked with the whole experience so that weekend I took my CBT and did an intensive DAS course which took a week.. Cost something like £580 to do it all.
after that I went and bought an R6 lol

Hi, i did my CBT when i was 16 it cost me £90 and that was on a weekend it took from 9 o clock in the morning till around 3... This then entitled me to ride a scooter :P
Then you can complete a CBT Conversion test which then will entitle you to ride a 125cc
Then the best thing to do after this is go out and buy a nice GSXR600 and tell the shop to then restrict it to 33bhp ride it for a couple of weeks get used to handling ect... Then go back to the shop and get it de restricted again ;) You got a 600cc bike on a 125cc License ;)

my 250 can do 0-60 faster than a VTS , and the insurance is only £300 :D
Not bad for a 17yr old! (im 18 now but i got the bike wen i woz 17)
obviously the top speed has changed when i down geared it from about 110 to about 90ish now...
in regards to the test, i don't want any confusion here its not like you have a choice between Direct Access (DAS), direct access basucally means ur doin the motorbike test and over 21 so no need for a restriction...
in terms of the restriction, theres nothing stopping a 17/18 yr old like myself buying a Kawasaki ZX10R and paying the £100 to get it restricted with the certificate and then just taking the washer restrictors out the exhaust yourself (thats all that is restricting it when you get it restricted) and then when the poilce or insurance ask, you have paid to get it restricted and just say 'well ive paid to get it restricted' and show em ur certificate ' its nothing to do with me that the washers aint there, the garage mustn't av put them in'
not that i'd condone that sort of thing

I have recently just passed my Theory & Hazard Perception and have now booked my test for next month which is a Direct Access cos i'm 21,
In total i paid,
CBT = £80.00
Theory & Hazard Perception = £21.50
Direct Access 3 Day Course (21+yrs Age) = £345.00
Hoping to get a Honda CBR600RR 2007 Edition.:y:

Also, you cannot ride over a 125cc or a restricted bike on a CBT it is against the law to do so, if your stopped when riding it, your in serious trouble because your license does not entitle you ride it and any insurance you may have on it, becomes invalid.

yer on a CBT you can only ride anythin with an engine no bigger than 125cc end of! the best 125 if you dont really have a budget is either a cavica mito or an aprillia rs125 which will hit 90 i've heared

if i remember a cbt cost about £80 (was inclueded with my bike tho), and thats a mornings work. very easy just have to show your in control of the bike. i then went along the lines of my theory test (£20ish at the time) the a hour lesson (£20-30 cant remember) then my test which was about £100 inclueding bike hire.
from start to finish this took me 2 weeks and about £200.
I was 18 at the time, brought a aprilia rs125, did my test... said i would keep the aprilia. about a week past and i brought a Yamaha R6 at 18. Restricted to 33bhp (well for 24 hours it was) R6 was the best move i ever made, speed was crazy, and the control the bike gave you was amazing.
As long as you treat other road users as complete nobs that can not drive and have the eye sight of a bat you should be ok!

The garage will have documented the work they did. Your insurance will be invalidated and you're risking a ban.

Please point out where i said it was big and clever?!
At the end of the day i knew the 'risk' i was taking at the time there was no way of telling if its restricted by eye. End of the day mate im not the only person that has done this nor will i be the last, in fact theres probably 1000's doing it now!
one of my friends got caught speeding (over a ton on the motorway) on his 'restricted' sv650, even tho it should have a top speed of about 95 restricted he went to court and got a ban for 70 days, no mention of the restriction ever came to light.

Mine cost me about £350 (A2) in total, im only 17 and i got a 400cc supermoto (retricted to 33bhp) but i done my A2 before my car test, well worth it, 33bhp is ok for a while then you only have to wait 2 years, before you cant ride any Bhp bike. :y: Its well worth it, bike all the way!
I done my cbt when i was 16 £90
17 i done theory for A2 £21 i think
Then 2 training days and done my A2 test around the £350 mark.
The test is pretty easy, just reminded me of my cbt (But it helped me that i road a 125 on my cbt for a few months before my test)
If you want a bike get a supermoto, the most fun you could ever have on the road :y:

No it won't. The R6 is a 4cylinder achieving max torque fairly high up the rev range.
If you want to get high torque from a restricted bike you need to opt for a v-twin that has very high torque low down the rev range.

Good for you.
You're right, it won't. I didn't suggest it did. But, for an R6, if you restrict the bhp to 33 you'll lower the torque figure. If you read your original post, you state that the torque remains the same. It won't. Check out the bhp and torque graphs for an R6 and you amy grasp the concept.
