When that light comes on it normally means the immobiliser is kicking in i think. Could be absolutely anything though.

My old 1.1 use to do this every couple of months. When id turn the ignition on, I got an orange flashing key sign, so I just used to take the key out of the ignition, turn it around, and put it back in - and it used to always work

It's to do with the ignition barrel, undo the dash under the steering wheel and mess about with the wires cant remember which ones it was but it happened on mine i think i took the barrel out in the end cos i couldn't work out what it was.
Also when you put the key in the ignition try pushing the key up a little bit towards the roof, think there's sometimes a problem with the barrel contacts.
I used to have to do that with mine to get the power steering and heater to work.
Then i joined the cables from the ignition etc underneath think that may have solved it. Ill try and find the thread that shows what im on about.

I had this problem with mine and it was more serious than just a little problem but mines a VTS if that makes a difference (ive now had to have immobiliser fixed)
But a solution to it in future is try takin battery off for about half hour and then trying again (saves forking money out)
