View Full Version : Back from garage with a wobble!

Car been in garage for numerous things:
Fitting Mintex pads on front
Fitting OMP pads on back
Fitting Mintex Discs
Change back to standard manifold for MOT
Fitting Goodridge Stainless brake hoses
Lifting exhaust and modifying heat shield
Picked it up today and at 60mph there's a wobble in the wheel which lasts all way up.
I do know they had to take struts out to get the Hoses on properly but it vibrates like fuck now at this speed. Thought they may have put wheels on backwards but no, and then I thought that maybe one of the weights have come off wheel causing it to mis-balance. Stumped frankly. Gonna give them a buzz tomorrow to get it booked in again on Sat. Doh!.
Any ideas on what could be causing this. Despite burning oil in the cat on way home causing smoke (cured by running engine for 10mins to burn all oil off) there isn't anything else wrong at all.
After new brakes, is it normal to have a shittier brake force than before ie, waiting for brakes to bed in?

yeah, think its about 100 miles you usually have to drive before the brakes properly bed in, but dont quote me on the 100 miles bit. :y:

You need to properly bed in the brakes..
To save me typing I ripped this of the AP racing website
ROAD CAR DISC BRAKE BEDDING IN PROCEDURE
Bedding the disc from new or stress relieving the cast iron disc after it has been clamped to the mounting bell is of paramount importance if premature warping is to be avoided after the brakes are used to their full potential.
AP Racing discs are produced from the same castings as our normal race discs, but when used in the controlled area of motor sport it is easy to instruct a driver to gradually bring the disc up to working temperature with some moderate braking over a small amount of measured laps, progressively increasing his braking effort until an Engineer assess the disc visually or by temperature readings.
For road car installations the process needs to be as follows:-
For the first 10 miles, light braking from 50/60 mph down to 30 mph if possible in blocks of 5. Do not attempt any high-speed stops down to zero at this point, as only the faces will heat up with the mass remaining cool along with the mounting area. For the next 100 miles increase the braking pressures similar to stopping in traffic, again avoiding if possible full stops from above 70 mph. By now the area around the mounting bolts should be a light blue temper colour. This is a good indication that the correct heat soak has been achieved. For the next 100 miles gradually increase the braking effort after this full power stops can be used. The disc should now be an even dark to light blue temper colour, depending on the pad type and the braking effort being used during the process. This process must be completed before any race circuit use.
Do not leave your foot on the brake when parked in the paddock after a track session. If you do, the hot spot created by the pad can distort the disc in that localized area causing a high spot, resulting in vibration under braking.
The wobble, I'd guess they knocked of a wheel balancing weight. If something was incorrectly fitted i'd expect wobble from low speeds also

Took it back last night to the garage, got front 2 wheels balanced (1 was way out). Took it on the motorway and still there. Dammit!.
Booked in again tomorrow morning for a more accurate balancing and tracking. Hopefully that shit disappears tomorrow. So annoying. Can't even hold a cig in same hand as touching the steering wheel...

:panic: i had this problem on my old sierra had to have wheels balanced on the car

Get the rears balanced as well mate, i had a wobble at 60 mph and one of the rears needed balancing, this sorted it

Balanced twice now and still there. Could it be anything else?

Who does them on the car?

The steering kind of feels a little bit lighter too, would this indicate anything else wrong with it?

You got standard VTR (centreless) alloys? Mine were a pain the ass to balance - so got rid!
Wheel balance usually comes on and disappears once past a certain speed.
Drive-shafts or all manner of things can cause vibration. Had mine replaced and a hub/bearing, that all caused shaking and stupid noises.
Your problem with vibration sounds a pain, but could make sense from the work you had done... If it's through wheel that suggests the front end. With your brake work would be easy to assume it's a problem there. Did you go easy on the new discs when you started driving, new ones don't like getting too hot too quick (ref post above)?

No they're aftermarket 15". Just been to another wheel specialist. They rebalanced (again) and did tracking too.
Problem still there. Pain in the fucking ass. Feel like selling the french bastard.
God knows what else it could be. Defo not bearings as had them checked, as well as the droplinks etc. Maybe driveshaft problem or strut??

are the wheel designed for your saxo do they have spacers etc and are they all on and aligned properly

Are the tyre pressures ok?
FILVTR

Yeah, they came off a saxo previously and had these on for about 2 years with no spacers. Tyre pressures are ok.

Might be easier to try another set of alloys if you can get a lend of a set to rule out the wheels themselves fil. The only other thing i can think of is a knackered steering rack or associated steering gear but i would have thought that it would vibrate at all speeds if the rack was faulty. Good luck mate.

that wobble could be
wheels not balanced
worn bushes
centre or wheel spacers not on correctlty or not put on (seen it happen)
also wheel nuts not fully tighterend (seen it before to)
Tracking is out
brakes are binding slightly

I have the same problem! Car went into garage for 2 new front tyres, went to drive it home and at about 60mph steering wheel goes nuts. Have taken it back 2 times and had the them re-balanced, still no better?! Could it be the tracking?

Had the same problem on Monday, got new back tyres and had all 4 balanced as i had a bit of a shake on the front. Get to 50mph and the steering wheel goes crazy have been back to garage now and had them balanced 3 times now and no better. Today i put the vts wheels back on and it's fine now so i don't know what they have done?

i had this exact problem, it ended up been my driveshaft. Yours may not be this but i would get it checked out. I can remember when mine went the bloody thing shook so much, i had to stay about 20/30 mph.

could be somthing to do with the brakes

Have you had any joy fixing the problem? If so what was it?!
