Does anyone remember that thread from a few weeks back, when we were talking about why people's gear sticks were floppy? I don't know if this applies to all those with this issue, but what I've found on mine, is that it's not directly related to the gear linkages, but a small part that links the linkage to the gearbox. I believe it's almost like a pin. Does anyone know exactly what this part is, so I can get a new one?
Many thanks.

Here's a pic of linkages etc..Is it any of these parts?

Hope this helps..

I'm thinking it could be No.6, which is a guide pin..

I hate my floppy knob. Gear knob that is :)

Thanks for the James!
It's not #6. It will be something like #3... It's where the linkage joins onto the gear box.

No probs... i will try and find some diagrams of that area for you..;)

From what I can gather, when you move the stick from side to side, it rotates #1. That causes the 3 linkages (shown as #4 twice and #5) to move. Those all fix onto the gear box AFAIK, and because those connections, or pins are worn, it makes the gear stick floppy, basically, there's shed loads of play...

Oh right, I see what you mean...
Thats the only diagram i can find of the linkages etc..Duno what to suggest really..:panic:

Toad, do you mean the Pin that wears out, and it if actually falls out the hole its fitted to you can't change gear? Well you can move the gear stick but it wont change the gear. I'm pretty sure you need a special tool to fit it.
There was a thread on here a few weeks ago, it had pictures etc, i'll try and find it.

OK, thanks for that.
It's some type of pin that connects the linkage to the gear box. When this pis is worn, it causes play in the stick, because the linkage has to be moved a certain amount before it has any impact at all on the gear box.

OK, just read the thread. Thanks again for the link. Looks like I'll need a special tool... I will pop into Pug tomorrow and see what they can do.

No problem, let me know how you get on.

According to Pug, there are two of them. They've ordered them in for me. 50p each... Hmm...

Will you be fitting yourself? If so, would you be able to take some pictures of where they are. My gearbox isn't that slack as far as I can compare with other saxo boxes, but it would be good to know where exactly these pins are.

No worries chap. I'll see what I can do. The only thing that concerns me, is the fact that someone in the other thread mentioned a special tool is required. I'll have to investigate when I get the piece.

#3 in the diagram is like £8 inc vat off pug, i got one when gearbox went on my old 106 gti!
theres wee bit of play in mine too, its usually either #4 or the big ball bit were end of #1 and #2 join!! they have rubbers that wear!
Toad

Yeah, I know that "ball" part you mean. I shoot the linkage closest to the actual box, and there was play, so I'm assuming that's the cause and not the ball part. Crap design don't you think?

Toad,
This is an interesting read. My stick is so floppy and I hate it. Makes me miss gears etc and it pisses me off.
If you could diagnose the problem to one specific part that would be great but im sure the problem is in all the linkages somewhere.

Colin,
How much does your gear stick move about? In gear mine probably moves about 1cm left and right, out of gear its a bit more before theres any resistance.
I can't say this have ever botherd me, but I don't mind the gearbox being a bit slack lol.
As for fixing it, don't people recommend quick shift, uprated linkages, and renewing those rubber mounts?
Toad,
Cheers, it looks like a lot of people want to know as well.

Mine moves about 15mm? Maybe 20mm. Well alot anyway!
Quickshift does nout im afraid.

BTW when ive been messing underneath the car, Im pretty sure its number 2 on that diagram, the part that actually screws to the bulkhead. And im also sure its the main linkage from the stick too.

OK chaps. I nipped to a mates garage who's got a ramp... It's not entirely conclusive I'm afraid, but i'm sure of where the problem is being caused.
It's not the part with ball in the centre, but if you are facing the front of the car, there are 2 linkages which go to the right from that ball area, and they are not quite parallel. Anyway, when you move the gear stick side to side (gently, so you are only using the play) it moves that part with the ball in it, which in turn moves the linkages that go off to the right. The top linkage goes to a level type thing which fixes on to the gear box. Basically, this lever moves a considerable amount before it actually does anything with the gear box if that makes any sense?
This will need more investigation, we couldn't get to the bottom of things unfortunately.
Colin

That does make sense Toad. So the problem lies within the gearbox lever we thinks?
Toad

OK, here's that picture again. I've circled the area for clarity.
http://i13.tinypic.com/5yrwv1t.jpg
You can now see the 2 linkages I'm on about. Both are numbered 4 for whatever reason. When you move the stick side to side, it rocks that main beam side to side also. Which basically pulls those number 4 linkages back and forth. Can you see how that works? When they move back and forth, it takes a lot of movement before they actually "do anything" if you what I mean? Hard to explain. So, the problem lies either with the gear box, or whatever type of object attaches the linkages to the gear box.
Toad
29th August 2007, 14:47
Just to clarify... When you move the stick to one side, it moves number 4 linkage with no issues. However, number 4 linkage will freely move left to right a good cm or 2 before it actually becomes stiff. In other words, before it moves whatever it should be moving in the gear box.
I don't now how to fix it! :(
