View Full Version : Whining Noise Doing My Head In

Right, first off, I have already searched through and tried everything stated but to now joy (before I get told to search :p)
Just recently I'm getting the whining noise related to when the car is idling and accelerating/decelerating. This noise is of a high pitch (so a ground loop isolator didn't work as it filtered out all the bass on my speakers) and naturally only affects my amped front components.
As soon as I remove the RCA's from my HU, 95% of the noise goes (I can still hear a small bit of noise from the speakers though (until I turn the HU off.)
All of the ICE has been tested out of the car and has no problems. Separate RCA, power and earth leads have been run outside of the car. (still happens) with the kit in.
Three different earth points have been tried and same to battery connection points.
A treble blocker was suggested (as the pitch is very high) but this filters out everything above 100Hz (and seeing as the speakers output 20-32000Hz, I Only had low level bass output)
What the hell is causing this whine? Its been getting worse over the course of the last week to the stage where i've disconnected the RCA's from the HU and I'm just listening using the standard rears.
I will try to give more info where possible
Any ideas then guys?
TIA

I do get this problem some times when i got my 6x9's connected to my amp......though its fine when subs are connected.......it cud be your earth? make sure where u bolted your earth its not bolted down on to paintwork......if so sand it down so its bare metal then re-connect it.......if you no what i mean then try it again
Im sure theres a thread on here about all this :y:

Already searched. I may sand it down even further to make sure (there's no paint there already and its been fine upto now)

Where have you got it bolted down to? i used to have mine in the boot hatch......but i changed it and bolted it to the seat bolts

Its on the bolt under the rear bench. I've tried all three threads that are under the bench - all the same. Just made sure the earth connection is good - problem still stands

Id had this problem for AGES tried different earth, sound suppressors the lot. Turns out i had a faulty PREOUT on my headunit. Soon as i changed head units it went!!!
Try a different head unit if you can.

I really do hope its not the HU - for what i've got (Pioneer DEH-P9800BT) i so badly hope its not to blame - will run the preout tomorrow then to my speakers indoors and see if its still there....
Anyone know where the earth to the HU lies??
Also, whats the odds of it being that the alternator is on its way out??

i had the same problem a few years back. so i replaced the cables with decent ones and ive never had problems since

All the cable are autoleads cables. Is this common for this to suddenly appear with autoleads then?? (Ie that the terminal on the amp end where the wire goes in starts to weaken??) if so then I may try another lead as we only ran my power lead out of the car not a different one...

not sure about what you mean by the above. also im not sure if the autoleads are any good. but when i had the same nippy whinning noise years ago, i replaced all my cables with the fusion leads apart from my earth. i used the same earth lead. maybe the fusion leads aren`t the best but it solved my problem. the same leads are in my saxo now all taped together including the power lead from the battery, and there is no whinning noise whatsoever. they only cost 20quid from halfords for the fusion leads. thats what i would do is replace the leads.

i had this problem was dodgy preout so i used the other preout and its gone if that doesnt fix it try a new head unit then try earths and alternater

i got the same problem mate! have re-wired whole of ice system with better quality cables, replaced standard rca leads with coil wrapped foil shielded cables. tried different earthing points, fitted an alternator suppressor and still no good. turned engine on the other day and let it whine abit, then pulled headunit out and found if i tap on the back next to all the wires the tapping noise is produced out through the speakers, which made me think the hu isnt earthed properly. anyway disconncted earth from wiring loom and connected directly to car and still no joy. beginning to think either hu is faulty or amp, need someone who i can test their hu and amp on. will let u know how i get on!

sounds like HU is to blame. I was using a Pioneer headunit at the time aswell and it wasn't very old!!

I've had the RCA's disconnected from the HU with the Pre-out cable disconnected and the whine is still there. Have been thinking about it and a dodgy power cable could be the problem as the terminal on the amp end has been well moved (ie getting the odd fray cable appearing) Will get another set of power leads and will see if that fixes it (seems to have for some)
Will also look into alternator suppressors (car needs a service so may have it looked at)

I've had the RCA's disconnected from the HU with the Pre-out cable disconnected and the whine is still there.
Sorry mate i don't understand what you mean by this.
When i had this problem, I tried all the RCA outputs on my headunit and made no difference untill i physicvally changed the HU over for another. Power cable should be fine aslong as its not next to the speaker wire or RCA leads.

The RCA's are disconnected from the HU (preout disabled as well) and you can still hear the whine (about 1/3 as loud) I'm getting the alternator checked this afternoon...

Another thing that can cause your noise could be if you have all cables running down same side of the car this can cause interference.
What i mean is low budget cables with a bad earth can cause an electrical frequecy to appear, sounds just like a low buzzing noise and sometimes a low bass note sound.
Try moving power cable away from your pre outs and speaker cables then sand earth connection point down to bare metal(out of amps way).
hope you get this sorted.

Right, lil update. I got the car checked yesterday to eliminate that from the ICE. And after a few tests, prior to previous belief, it may be a fault on the amp that is causing the problem (as its now getting worse without the engine running)
I'm going to get the amp checked again today (as they only checked it with a sub - and its a high pitched noise - so won't be heard)
Will report back in a bit, but we have found the problem

i had an amp that used to make a high pitched buzzing noise. it wasnt from the speakers it was from the amp itself.
the noise went when i changed earth, and moved all my wires about. So i'd try those two things mate

Right, the HU is going back under warranty as when i got it checked again yesterday it was doing all weird things (prior to previous belief). Also the remote out doesn't work unless the aerial is connected. He had a closer look and said to return it under warranty and get a shiny new one :y:
So thats what i'm doing. Hopefully this'll all be sorted in the next week and life will be all back to normal

I had this today, to fix it i moved the power cable away from the rca cables and it disappeared. Was also getting louder when i reved car lol so i guessed must be power cable. Now running power cable down middle of car and rca's down passenger side :D :D

hiya mate,
just wondered if you have sorted it and if so how as i have the same problem as you do matey.
i get the whinning noise through my speakers when the ignition is on and it gets even worse when i put my foot on the accellerator and when i turn the steering wheel, also gets louder.
ive tried everything same as you mate and still no joy.
let me no, cheers.

iv got this noise. currently takin out my carpet to lay wires properly think the power cable is right next to speaker wire see if it solves it

well to be honest i havn't I just live with it now as it happens.
Since this thread last year, I've laid all new power and speaker cables, new amps have been installed, the HU has been tested, new RCA leads laid, uprated the Big3, new earth points on the chassis and a new ground for the HU (via a interference filter).
After a period of driving, the whining gets a little quiter, which is now pointing me to the battery and/or alternator.
I'm sson planning to change the battery for an optima yellow top to see if that makes any difference and i hope to get hte alternator refurbed as well:)
