December 1998... The beginning.

In December 1998 I went along to my local Citroen dealer (Barclays of Warrington) to blag a test drive in a Saxo VTS. I originally had no intention of trading in my nicely modded Escort Si, it was just one of those days when there was seemingly nothing else better to do than take a couple of cars out for a test drives.

Unfortunately, there were no VTS models left in the North West region, so I took a VTR for a spin instead. I was so impressed with the VTR's handling and performance that I decided to order a VTS straight away, without even driving one! My only concern was whether or not I could drive the thing, as the pedals seem pretty close together when you've not driven a Saxo before

I picked up my new toy from the showroom on the 5th January 1999. I drove it straight home and proceeded to rip out the standard head unit in favour of my Panasonic setup, which I had removed from my Escort. So... the car only had 2 miles on the clock and already the modifications had started!! Oh dear...

January 1999... The Mod's continue.

About 4 weeks later the car was booked in at DP Motorsport for a 40mm suspension drop all round. This enhanced the already great handling of the VTS - a mod' I am very glad I did.

In my Escort I had installed quite a lot of stereo gear and knowing I wouldn't get a decent re-sale value for it, I decided to build another custom boot install for my Saxo. Out came the tools and MDF and after a couple of evenings of hard graft the build was ready.

The finished article consisted of a stealth shelf, amp rack, false floor and a base box to house two 12" subs. All of the equipment was connected with the help of my mate Garry.

The next mods to appear were a K&N 57i kit, a 4" Devil backbox and a Superchip. These mods gave the car a great induction & exhaust note, but the best aspect was the Superchip. It didn't give any real performance increase on the road, but it did raise the ECU rev limiter to upto 7,700rpm.
