Bring the noise

After the car passed its MOT it has either been A) Sat and done nothing or B) took my mrs to work. I went to uni in it once and missed the responsiveness that the new cat lacked.

The funny thing is any minor change that happens with this car and I'm on it like a shot, it's instantly noticeable, nevertheless I set about fixing it.

I bought myself a Sportex decat as a little milestone present...

Yep the chassis has finally reached 100,000 miles. So what does that mean? Well, the chassis, the carpet, the doorcards, the sounddeadening, the interior loom, the dash, the brake lines, the servo, the headlights, the wiper arms, the bodywork and windows have all covered this mileage. Whereas engine and suspension is another story lol! In actual fact I'm running driveshafts that are over 100,000 miles thanks to curran :D Surprised they're still going despite the abuse I've thrown at them.

Anywho. The decat is awesome. It runs quieter at low revs, no annoying rattle either... and my god has it opened the car up. Much more responsive... but that said I've only done a max of 40mph in third gear so I haven't enjoyed the full flavour of what the car will sound like when it approaches that little invisible red line (still need a rev counter)

So it had been too long since I'd burnt petrol unnecessarily and took a diversion on a drive home. As a video was needed of the de-catted supersprint system (somewhere quiet and secluded was required) I set off and ended up travelling a nice 20 miles before noticing that I should pull over whilst sunlight was still available. But the drive was sure worth it!

As promised here is a quick vid of how the system sounds now. The main gain from the decat is throttle response and noise but it feels noticeably quicker, we'll see if there are any gains at the next RR.

And again here are some pictures after the drive:

Sorry for the long post.

The latest

Again been a while Since I've updated so here's a pic to get us going:

Back in December my battery died... :n:

So I bought a new bosch unit with slightly higher CCA's

At the start of February Northampton had a load of bad weather, resulting in the council bins falling flat onto the bonnet. Causing me to wake up and discover two little dents.

Brilliant. I got the dents pulled out a tad but due to the metal strengthening beam being behind the dent it would not pull/push much further out then what it is now leaving me severely p*ssed. :wall:

I then bought a JVC R611 unit to replace my old knackered Kenwood. Ten times better!

At the end of february I purchased some new gearbox oil for the sax before the warmer weather could roll in.

Some Fuchs titan sintopoid 75W-85, and some new sump plugs to ensure of no leakages.

And now into March - and on one of my many washes of the sax a leak has developed. :wall: I combated the usual targets; aerial, and window seal yet still a few trickles were coming in from behind the dash on the passenger side. It's going to be a dash out jobby me thinks as it's doing my nut in, but thankfully it's not as bad as it was!

I then headed to the fast show with performance torque and had a great day out getting sunburnt and smelling like rubber.

Some pics:

Cheers for reading. Expect updates in time for FCS! :y:

mk1 venetian red ftw! lol

just went through the whole thread mate, love it!

can tell you love and take care of this car with no expense spared, wish all saxos were treated like this :y:

i ant help but think a vt front bumper and colour coded bump strips would finish this of nicely, the car is really up to scratch i just really hate flat arch front bumpers lol

sparkes_westie 31st March 2011 18:56

^^^ couldn't agree more i really think that a VT front bumper would set this of :)

Update - of sorts.

So I travelled to FCS the other day... "any new additions to the car" I hear you roar... well no, other than a few thousand miles and a Northampton Saints tax disc holder to replace the ripspeed jobby bought for me 4 years ago. But here are some pics from the day:

Eitherway at FCS I was asked for an up to date spec list by a few people so here we go:

Suspension:
Full four stud hub conversion - taken from a 106 GTI
Drum beam axle taken from a furio - modified to suit application.
Spax VSX (non adj) dampers all round
Spax 115lb 40mm lowering springs
22mm front ARB
Powerflex front ARB bushes
22mm rear ARB
19mm rear torsion bars
Powerflex lower engine mount
Recently renewed front wishbones, droplinks and bushes.

Engine:
1.6 8v Tu5 single plug VTR engine
Green panel filter,
Standard internals - running Fuchs titan supersyn 5w-40 oil.
S1 rallye downpipe
Sportex "race tube"
Supersprint 2inch exhaust system
Running a 3bar FPR and reworked return line.

Exact carbon braided brake lines.
Furio rear drum beam - recently renewed cylinders and lines.

Interior and ICE:
Full 106 Gti leather interior
Black carpet mats (none for driver - prefer the feel without oddly)
Thin sole driving shoes - genuinely prefer the feel; Nike Renzo's left in the back.
1.1 x black doorcards
JVC R611 unit.
SPS dynamics front components, standard rear speakers (switched off)
No rear soundproofing
14 inch spare wheel and jack (bought new)
1.1 sx dials awaiting fitment.

That sums the majority of the car up. There are other minor changes, but nothing worth mentioning of real depth.

I've been to Cornwall since FCS with a huge group of friends, Car didn't miss a beat on the 1200mile trip :D

I've since been had a few B road blasts, trips to Brum and a trip to Swanage Dorset. All epic trips with a few lovely compliments from randomers in between:

"Most cared for saxo I've ever seen"

and...

"This car is mentally loud" (which tbh was an overstatement in my opinion, made me chuckle nonetheless)

This last week I've bought some new Lemforder droplinks as my Pearl one's had worn out... and I've been getting fed up with my droplinks wearing out year after year I went for the most OEM droplinks I could... £43 out of pocket and they're sorted:

And the car has now been over a three day period:

Cleaned under the bonnet,
Washed,
Claybarred,
polished,
waxed, (Dodo juice orange crush on reccomendation from Mr Myers :thumbup1: )
Cleaned and sealed the wheels,
Interior cleaned and leather treated.

Feels a totally different car to drive... which is odd because it's just really clean atm. Eitherway Looking forward to tomorrow, and I'll see some of you there! I'll be on the Performance Torque stand, think we're near the Pits. I'll head over to the saxp stand as I'll try and seek out Viper and Alex.

Just seen this sorry bud. Thanks a bunch! Come say Hi tomorrow if you're at trax!

Total change of course...

Been a while since I've been on here, but since I last posted the car has changed dramatically.

The car went into storage back in December when the arrival of...

... my focus sport TDCI became my daily. Doing 60miles a day in a crashy, noisy, fun saxo was killing my body so something comfortable and enjoyable became the daily. The saxo was tucked away and now lives in a garage not far from my home.

The saxo has become a toy and something to work on in between work and play, it's a little legend and really needs to get to where I want it to be.

The car is being re-taxed at the start of May and I have a huge list of things that need to be done before Practical Performance Car in the Park and certain things will need bedding in before then too... but for the meantime:

And the word... "pins" will be your teasers till I'm ready to reveal all. :y:

That it is my friend ;) Sadly a house comes first at the moment so the current plans will push through for an enjoyable summer with the car and keeping the focus ticking over everyday till April next year. :y:

I've just been looking at the Rallye! Will give it a full read through in a bit but it looks very interesting.

jayline 23rd April 2012 22:32

i have to say this is one very inspirational thread! i love the time and effort you have put into this! im also going the same route as you atm with a 4 stud conversion and 1.6 8v lump! i love the fact thats is small subtle things that make this car so amazing in my books! well done lad :D

Apologies for the lack of updates (Picture Heavy)

About time I updated you poor folks on what has happened with this little legend...

So the car got setup for track last year and it really exceeded my expectations.

Mallory was ticked off (in the rain) and so was Silverstone. The car went past alot of quicker cars on the track and was left in the dust by many others :p

VIDEO at silverstone (if I'm honest, saxo's don't suit Silverstone... too long straights on this track).

The car was different now it was fully stripped. It was eager and it had gained alot more attention. 2012 was a good year for this car. In october that year I took the car off the road with the sole intention of rust proofing the car and caging him.

Work began on stripping everything down further and treating the car. The car was getting ready for another year and it's MOT and passed with flying colours. :A:

Another year awaited...

So Mallory Park came round again and it was time for some more sessions in the dry... I'd been away in Romania for work so needless to say I prepared the car left it in the garage, came home then drove straight there caged up and ready to go.

I'm planning the cars first proper drive somewhere in Wales in July so the idea at present is to sort the exhaust (blowing since Mallory in may), refresh brake fluid and bleed, Fit shorter box (need to acquire) and get some lighter 14inch wheels.

As you can see the interior isn't perfect. But it's more than functional. I will this winter be stripping the interior down and ensure that it's all venetian red and not just black hammerite in the footwells for ease.

AlexB 10th June 2013 12:23

Love this car still man :)
Nice photo of what appears to be my mates 205 rallye too (yellow with the european spec arches)

Glad to see its still in use
Last time i saw this it suprised me on the a43 leaving trax lmao

shooorn94 14th June 2013 10:21

I'm glad you do fella.

I must apologise if it is your mate then fella. I put him under alot of pressure on track and he lost the rear end once when looking in the rear view at me on the long sweeping bend that I forget the name of. Otherwise the car looked awesome :)

Haha that was some time ago! I remember at the time not having a clue who you were :P

Just bought a B+M quickshift for the sax :D

The focus has the saxo's old stereo fitted and smoked side repeaters fitted yesterday so as I'm moving out next month and the rent will be somewhat more expensive :fcuk:I will be putting the saxo on hold. A shorter box will do me for the rest of the year :)

Gandi699 14th June 2013 10:31

whats the spec of this to make that power?

1.6 8v engine, green panel filter, supersprint full system. Loved and looked after by a one of a kind owner :A:

shooorn94 12th June 2015 10:17

Storage hurts.

Hi all! This year I decided to make a stupid decision... I put the saxo into storage whilst I figured out what to do with my life/money/house/cars.

I also picked up an Octavia VRS 1.820vt to use as my daily that was in desperate need of work (June 2014) I pieced the octavia back together again and rolled on enjoying the extra power, space, comfort and boost that my old daily (Focus TDCI sport) didn't give me.

Needless to say I started modding the Octavia. New suspension, exhaust, stiffer mounts, M1144 pads etc. etc. all in the aim to get the VRS to 220bhp some time in the year.

So the SAXO... is covered in dust. Is sitting in my garage feeling desperately sorry for itself. My thoughts and feelings at the moment? Part of me says sell up/brake for parts and buy a new project, then there is the part of me that knows I will miss it far too much even if my daily does give me smiles per mile.

The saxo had a great year in 2014 - competing in sprint events - the car performed awesomely - Nothing went wrong. The new rad kept cooling low and the car exceeded my expectations... it just needed more power.

The saxo just has alot of memories attached to it now and the car now can only really be used as a fun/track car. Long distances really do grind you down! So some serious thought is required...

I'll let you know my decision. :A:
