TBH it better be Rush lol.

Nah seriously its fine, Josh used that on his and its more than adequote. Its clear that the bottom end is painted black originally anyway as its cast iron and would develop rust if it wasnt. Where the paints aged over time (R reg engine) theres a few small bubbles that are formed under the original paint.

These bubbles at the moment arent any real problem, but when dremmeling over them there is some rusty colouring just under the surface. Well worth keeping clean for anyone else who looks after their engine and perhaps top up this paint. Hammerite is guaranteed for 5 years aswel on a single coat

cheers pred.

still waiting for news from QEP of head being done, but not expecting to hear anything until about wednesday i guess.

ive got a load of parts sitting in my room- i.e different bearings here and there, piston rings, big ends, little ends, etc etc. all of which i think most are bottom end related, havnt got the foggiest idea what im doing with them though, bit relictant to start fannying around with internals. may get someone to do that bit for me when my timing gets setup again. Going to see if a bloke from local Specialist will come and do it in his spare time

jpsaxo 14th October 2007 16:53

Hammerite will be fine lads :)

willsy 14th October 2007 19:12

Josh how easy/hard is it to change all those bottom end internals that ive got? would i be best getting someone to to do those to ensure that theyre 100% correct.

Do you know of anyone that can do the timing/how much would you expect to pay for it?

Bought the hammerite today for painting the bottom end and some spray to do the sump. So a nice lil update should come tomorrow.

Replacing a fair few nuts and bolts aswel as theres plenty that look shagged tbh especially the crappy torx ones which i always fear rounding.

willsy 15th October 2007 13:14

Monday 15th October

Started to paint the bottom end today and a few other bits and pieces ready to put them back on.

Pleased with how the bottom end looks, only done 1 coat to 1 side so far (will probably do 3 just to be sure its fully covered)

So far though the sump looks piss poor. No matter how much ive cleaned it with gunk remover etc etc when applying the Hammerite it still seems to have had a bubbly reaction to the first coat, which looks crap (see below pic)

After whacking on a 2nd coat though it seemed to cover fine with no oily marks so im thinking that the first coats absorbed any remaining oil. Ill rub it back a bit tomorrow morning so a smoother surface and give it a couple of coats- should look spot on then all being well :)

And the only other bit i got round to painting

rushy_23 15th October 2007 13:15

Good stuff there Matt. Hammerite literally is FTW. I really do mean that lol.

Wayne 15th October 2007 13:15

great updates:y: saxo engine is coming on nicely:)

Predator_R32 15th October 2007 13:18

good stuff mate, should of used some vinegar to clean the parts, there supposed to come up well, and would of been good for a good painting surface, think its white vinegar you use though

willsy 15th October 2007 13:23

2nd coat of sump, looks less patchy. will definately sand back and do again on a smoother surface :)

another of the bottom end after a bit more drying time

Predator_R32 15th October 2007 13:26

yeah a suppose a bit of sanding it back smooth should sort it out :y:

Cheers Pred, had a try of the vinegar last week on some of my bolts, they came up ok, but Dads got a wire brush machine and some hefty goves so i dont sever my hands. Brings them up perfectly in a very small amount of time :)

Alot of the bolts with torx or allen key style fitments im going to buy new ones anyway as some look a little worn.

Coming along nicely though. Going to tackle some of the big end/little end bearings myself tomorrow morning, and start to fit some of the other seals. Also getting a price for doing my timing aswel when the heads returned :)

Coming along nicely mate, bottom end looks good :y:

jpsaxo 15th October 2007 18:15

How many text's have we sent each other today? Lol

Looks good mate, going to dig some pic's out now. As said on text try getting hold of some brake dust cleaner, did the trick for mine....

Def think pistons are a must if its had compression issue's in one cylinder, first thing you should be doing is taking the pistons out and have a good look at the bores. If they are fine you can either go with new rings or froged high comps - choice is yours. But while the pistons are out you might as well go for forgies IMHO.

Chances are oil cooler wont be necassary untill summer anyway so giving your bank a couple of months to recover!

I think at this point you should be taking the pistons out and have a nosey around, then look at fitting as per above, after that the bearings and trusts can go in - also a couple of crank seals that i supplied in that kit for you mate :)

jpsaxo 15th October 2007 18:20

The 2 different types of bearings we spoke about earlier...

Bottom end pics:-

Old pistons

New pistons on rods

Bare block

Crank

1st piston in

That should get your juices flowing if nothing else, Lol :)
