Dimmer switch on a mk1 is below the steering column. same sort of roller switch as the headlight adjusters.

Chris_Mac 4th November 2007 21:34

right im attempting this tommorrow, had a look today and i have no idea how to get the dials out, i can see the two screws i need to get out, but i have no way of getting them done!

its a mk2 vtr, anyone have any ideas on how to get it out?

carlos45 4th November 2007 21:46

i took steering wheel off and all screws where reachable, might be an easier way though...

Chris_Mac 5th November 2007 00:15

disconnect battery and remove the steering wheel then??

did you bother disconnecting the airbag module?

if so where is it located?

Saint 5th November 2007 08:47

air bags connected to the seat pre tensioners, funnily enough was reading up on pulling mine off last night lol

think the connector is located under or behind centre console. but they reckon you wait 5 mins after disconnecting that wire before you pull it off too.

my mates good at soldering so may give this a go :d

carlos45 8th November 2007 22:42

yeah just disconnect battery, leave it about 10-15 mins for good measure, then unscrew the steering wheel. the airbag just pulls off after you've unscrewed it. this is mine, i preferred the display green tbh,

you definately have them round the right way??

they work in series of 3 so if one doesnt work then the other 2 in that series wont either, do your sidelights work??

yes lad the sidlights work, and the rest of the lights work, the one at the temp gage works, but the ones behind the milage screen dont work and the milage screen wiring has come off

how can it be stuck on again?

Predator_R32 12th November 2007 00:05

so the strip cable connector is buggered on the mileometer???

Chris_Mac 12th November 2007 00:07

yea, the mileometer is currently off the board, it came clean off, the contact are in tack and thankfully didnt rip or break, just needs put back on

predator have you msn??

if so please add me, chris2_hoi@hotmail.com

TU-Tuning 12th November 2007 00:07

New dials then tbh mate. Seriously tricky soldering to get that back on

Predator_R32 12th November 2007 00:08

yeah mate cant really do anything else except get some new ones

Chris_Mac 12th November 2007 00:10

can i just get a board from another car and plug it in?

is the milage stored somewhere in the car, or on the actual board?

Predator_R32 12th November 2007 00:12

nah i think its stored on the actual circuit board mate, so changing th board wont do owt

TU-Tuning 12th November 2007 00:13

Everyones got a different opinion on that mate.

My dials have been nothing but trouble since i did this, i have a second hand dial set but i dont wanna fit em incase the mileage goes mental.

Some say it adds the mileages, some say it uses the one on the newly fitted board, some say it just uses the higher of the two. I havent got the balls to find out which is true tbh
