My clunk noise comes from the front driverside and is apprant when stationary and moving the steering wheel anti clockwise, it happens at slow speeds also, does this fit the criteria of loose suspension spring cup?

My car is a MK2 VTR 00' X 65k (90bhp engine).

Had another look today and im pretty sure that its not a loose spring cup as it didnt move with a lever bar. The paint that has worn away is the same on both sides an i think its just from the rubber shiled. It sound like it is coming from near the top of the strut. Could it be the top spring cup or is it more likely to be the top mount? Really annoying me now.

i would put money on it being the strut top bearing that aint that much to buy

Keep us posted on your results/findings, I am getting closer to getting a local garage have a look at this very similiar problem also, try and get some images also :p

Could worn shockers aid in this sound also?

yea could be top mounts what happens is the bearings dry out and become noisey but its no really a clonck more a grinding on turning or when going over bumps you can get a slight clonck

SaxOmniaC 14th January 2007 15:34

top man, gonna check this out cos its been bugging me for 6 months

Well it started as a clunk but now is more of a grinding noise and happenes on nearly every turn. If this was the problem would it not still do it when the car is jacked up?

Cheers

having same problem with my car, its driving me skits!

im getting it booked in to a garage although i would love to have a go myself but not sure what is causing the clunk

i checked my car earlier, got my mate to rock my car on the drivers side and i was looking at the spring, i could hear a pinging/clunking noise

im not sure whether the cup is broken or whether its the droplinks or balljoints

***also to add, when i brake, i get a slight clunk, then when i reverse, and apply the brake, get the clunk again***

could someone having same problem confirm the above? ^^^^***

thanks

The problem talked about in this thread is different. This is when people are on full lock or turning. Yours is when the suspension goes up and down and i would say it would be the droplinks. Only cheap to change even if it dont fix it :)

Hope this helps.

so it clunks when only on full lock OR does it clunk when you move the wheel?

thanks

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but this seems like the best thread on the subject.

Having exactly the same prob. Get a series of clunking noises when steering, and not just on full lock. Happens on any degree of rotation; faster I steer the more frequent the clunk.

But as with SAM33R, it does sometimes make a clunk when pulling away from stand still and this sounds very similar to the knocking noise when the droplinks fail ( I've had 4 replaced since ive had the car ) but in this case I dont think its the drop links that are the problem.

Really hope its something simple and not that welding issue :(

Why not mate? Welding isn't that expensive if you know someone who'll do it outside of the garage.
I'd prefer for something to be a welding issue as it means it's not the part that will need replacing all the time, just a simple matter of bunging fifty notes to a guy down the road who is a welder by day, but does side jobs by night :)
