Could always remove the vt bodykit function over form and all that :)

jpsaxo 4th February 2012 22:53

No joe that would just be stupid lets be honest.

Stripping of the bay continues...

Brake servo, oil cooiler and wiper motor etc removed

And removed the interior and standard gear shift system so it's ready for satshifter fitting

Then it started snowing so I put her to back to bed...

Bit of progress with the head. Starting with a bare JP4 head, bit grubby at the moment and desperately needing improvement!

First thing I do, is attach a bare manifold flange and machine it into the ports, to get it matched perfectly and make starter marks for the hand porting, which helps with the precision. This is one really handy feature of making our own inlet manifolds, it can be made with the head, to get exactly the tract shape and size I want.

At the valve end, I start shaping and sizing upwards from the inside of the valve seat:

One of the most important things to master with porting, is repeating what you've done accurately across all the cylinders! When you get frustrated by the differing core shift of the casting, you know you're getting it! One of my frustrations with this casting can be seen here, the slight dip in the long side left by the factory throat blending machining. They go deeper than they need to and you need to balance losing it with getting the size and shape you want. Compromises have to be made with most head castings, how you manage them matters to the engine you create.

And having got the basic size and shape of the whole tract done using cutting tools, I tend to leave it for another day, so that I can come back with a fresh and critical eye, before commiting to the smoothing and finishing with abrasives.

jpsaxo 7th February 2012 19:16

Love it :D

Olly 7th February 2012 19:49

jpsaxo 8th February 2012 16:28

Another piece of the jig saw arrived today... A proper 'spal' fan, not the cheap shitty eBay ones

jpsaxo 10th February 2012 17:13

Another quick update;

I've booked the 180min track session @ FCS Donnington 2012 :)

jpsaxo 12th February 2012 10:17

jpsaxo 12th February 2012 11:54

The car has now been dropped off at marks...

And marks found the first hole already lol

willsy 12th February 2012 18:35

Successful days trailering today mate :-) we got lucky with the weather, glad the rain held off

jpsaxo 13th February 2012 08:58

Definitely a good day Matt, now all I need to do is work out how to get it home lol.

I'm glad it's all going to be sorted now anyway so I have a good chassis to work with from now on :)

Rush - roof (inc cross members) saves over 20kgs
boot inc spoiler and polycarb saved 20kgs, so there's 40kgs.

If I went full out with the hole saw, got all the loom stripped down and did a few other bits I could get it to 775kg's I reckon. I'll save that for another year :D

You need a S1 :D

mines lighter than your predicted figures as it stands now :p

Ash

jpsaxo 13th February 2012 17:36

Lol ash I know I know. It's going to be more than quick enough for my capabilities anyway :D

Interestingly my brothers s1 106 xsi weights in at 810kgs, that's stripped with carbon buckets as well. So without my cage our cars would weight roughly the same

mark1311 13th February 2012 22:13

right my first update of the thread.

only managed to get 2/3 hours on the saxo as i have a fiesta booked in all week for new arches good old rust. must say the citreons are very clean compared to fords rust wise.

anyways got the front end totali stripped down. started prepering the left hand wing for seam welding and rust repairs and strenthening. only have couple picture.

front end stripped down

Baz 15th February 2012 18:49

no messing about I see! Always good to see people get jobs in and get cracking with it, hated taking the car into the garage and they wait like 2 days before they start anything!

Good work thus far :)

JoshB 15th February 2012 19:32

When the bays finished and that engines in this will probably be the best saxo on SaxP.

Fucking lol at the "racing seat" Mark! Can't believe it's still going!

jpsaxo 15th February 2012 19:57

Looking epic mark :D

Sandy309 15th February 2012 20:12

Coming along nicely!

Exhaust ports done as far as I can before the valve seats are cut. The scariest part of the porting.

dannygti 15th February 2012 20:15

Beautiful :)

jpsaxo 16th February 2012 07:48

Yep very exciting times, its all coming together nicely so far... I picked up a new set of wheels on Tuesday night as well

Sandy309 16th February 2012 09:47

Rods have just arrived. This is my latest design, massively lighter than the lightest off the shelf "kit car" style aftermarket rods I've seen and beautifully made, with proper bolts.

Ash

Fingers crossed Ash, I've already got a fair bit planned tbh, Hopefully I can squeeze a track day in between fcs and the ring trip, then after the ring trip I'm heading back out to oz for a bit :)

adamskiTNR 16th February 2012 19:28

Most of the weight seems to have come off the cap sandy. almost as thin as the bearing lol
