Sneakydevil89 7th December 2009 17:44

update time:

Seeing as my middle name is infact "fail" my project for teh day failed miserably.

I unsoldered the SMD's from the mk2 digi dials i bought, re-soldering in blue SMD's, made the loom, labelled the loom and got to work.

took me fooking ages to get the wheel and dials off/out. needed a bigger torx bit than i had, so had to go to halfrauds and get ripped off for one of theirs.

finally got it all out. connected it all up..re-connected battery...and...

...NOTHING!

well not completely nothing. The main headlight indicator was now blue, as are the indicators, but nothing else worked!

by this time i thought fuck it, iv had enough, put the old dials back in as need the car for work tomorrow morning...

...get it back in, and oh suprise, now my old dials wont illuminate!

so, now iv got 2 sets of crapped up dials :wall:

think i may have blown a fuse when i put the digi dials in, but cant be sure!

anyone know which fuse i have to change for the dial illumination?

anyways, im fed up, so im ordering plasma dials instead. not as good, but meh, i fail at everything even slightly challenging.

denni 7th December 2009 18:03

aww guttin mate. urm not to sure which one the fuse is.

going to google it now. havnt actually checked to see if the speedo and rev counter works at all, or if its just the illuminations.

haha, this is my second sax, had a 1.1 2 tone first lol
but this one so far has been going as badly as the last.

though the engine seems to be ok...having said that there is a very worrying knockin noise come from the bottom end

Qucifer666 7th December 2009 18:54

did you solder the leds on the correct way, there is a right and wrong way. also its page 5, not 4 ;)

just looked at my fuse box, and not only did i blow a fuse, i melted 2 fuses!

looked at this fuse diagram to see which ones they were:

was numbers 2 and 3, which is odd as number 2 isnt unused apparently.

both are 25amp, which is annoying as i dont have any spare and lippy yoinked the ones from the badger, so cant use that

will have to go to a car place tomorrow before work to get some.

as for soldering in the LED's, i kinda thought they would have a right and wrong way, but there was nothing in the guide...

got plasma dials coming now anyway

Qucifer666 7th December 2009 19:22

there is a notch out of one corner of the leds, look closely and you will see :P

yeah i remember seeing them actually, but still doesnt tell me which way round they should be!

Qucifer666 7th December 2009 19:25

the same way thhe notch was on the ones you took off :)

Sneakydevil89 7th December 2009 19:31

probably should have taken note of that when i did it shouldnt i?

i was trying to save time today, so i unsoldered all the ones i wanted to change last night and then when my SMD's arrived this morning, i soldered them back on.

FAIL

Qucifer666 7th December 2009 19:37

i did one at a time, lol. oh well, plasmas should look good. :)
or i can check mine at the weekend and tell you where they go?

plasma's will look ok, but not as good as the Blue digi dials would look.

I was using my brothers soldering iron last night as it had a pointed tip and i think it was just a crapped up as mine. so that probably didnt help.

thanks man, but i think ill stick with the plasma's. hopefully i wont break them!

Sneakydevil89 10th December 2009 21:30

Big Ol Update Time:

This one is actually a proper one. so my plasma's turned up today, so decided as i had half a day off, to crack on and fit them. were fairly easy to do, but need to tidy up the wiring when i have more time, they look pretty goodi think!

anyways, pics!

Dials before

The kit

Front off...

New dials in...

front back on

and them all lit up

thoughts?

Eskimo 10th December 2009 21:54

Look good pal! Liking what done to my old car! :(

Not so keen on the white dials surround, i don't mean actual dials, the plastic thing! :)

benJee_VTR 10th December 2009 21:55

looks awesome, this is one for the near future for me too. Was it an easy job? looks it from the pics :y: Or maybe you just made it look easy ;)

MrHouston 10th December 2009 22:04

I really need to look at this section more, didn't even know you got a new car :o

Looks sweeeet, nice updates too :)

im undecided at mo, it was lying around so thought id pop it in while i had the standard ones out. Im getting new centre console and heater vents which it will kinda match. so see what it looks like then!

yeah, it is really. its a bit fiddly, but nothing too bad. All you do is take a switched lived so they illuminate only when lights are on and an earth from somewhere and boom boom tahts it.

Theres a little selector box so you can have it green or blue but currently i have no where to put it as its a bit square and theyre arent any flat surfaces near it.

But will sort that out soon enough!

haha yeah, the 2-tone died :( bad times

but im liking the westy so far!

more updates on the way i hope!
some more interior lighting i feel.

Liam-westcoast 10th December 2009 22:05

they look really good mate!!

MR_N 10th December 2009 22:16

Look good mate im in the market for getting rid of my blue dials for some plasma ones. where did you get them from?

benJee_VTR 10th December 2009 22:26

yeah visual performace do. pretty quick delivery too. was only 2-3days i think.

there a bit pricey, but i reckon you could sell your blue dials for a close to what you need to buy them.

gsavill90 11th December 2009 02:14

Hey, Had a look through my first progress thread earlier.. so weird looking back at it!

New dials look good :)
I'm planning on changing the LED's on mine when i get some free time, gunna go red like the new golfs :P Not sure if my eyes are make up for it though.. whenever i go to the opticians the black circles in the green background are ALWAYS clearer than the black circles in the red background... but oh well!

You got anything planned for over christmas?

Lippy 11th December 2009 02:28

christ havent checked your thread for a few days and few changes!

Sorry about swiping the fuses but i thought you'd always give me a shout for stuff like that...

New dials look different to any that ive seen so far! Pred's ones are blue are yours actually white?

yeah it is isnt it! had a look through first few pages of the badgers progress the other day...pre-badger actually lol

i tried the Mk2 digi dial conversion but i think i failed, but not sure as something i know wasnt plugged in, so it might have worked! but will look good red mate. its easy enough to do if you take your time and have a decent soldering iron.

i got a few plans, but nothing major. mostly interior lighting and putting some LED's here and there.

Oh dont worry about it mate! i wasnt trying to get at you or anything, sorry if it seemed like that! i went and bought a shit load of them the next morning anyways, which is kinda what i needed anyway. so its cool! i dont mind you nabbin bits off the badger, i owe you enough!

EDIT: Thinking about it if you meant give you a shout to ask for a fuse, i didnt really want to disturb you over 1 fuse! lol

yeah the dials are a newer design from the ones that pred has. i think i prefer preds ones, but theyre not bad all the same, they are blue its just not a great picture. my iphone camera is wank.

also had an idea about how i can change the other light colours, like handbrake light, main lights etc. its only a see through cover over white bulbs. so if i can some how duplicate it with the logo for each light in blue instead of red or green it would work. but that needs some thinking i think!

Sneakydevil89 12th December 2009 23:54

Update:

Turns out (lol) that i had put my steering wheel on wonky when i replaced the dials, so i took it off again today and tidied the wiring for the dials up, but think i must have put one cable next to another cable that shouldnt be as now the dials buzz quite loudly when there on. need to look into that!

also got some LED strips in the post. so went about wiring them in too. i know they wont be too everyones taste, but a nice bit of blue light goes nicely with the car.

Only thing is, that now i dont like my dials so much, as they are more turquoise than they are blue, so maybe Mk2 dials after all?

anyways, more updates to come! Got a blue rocker switch coming in the post that will be for the footwell LED's and the others i plan on putting in. I (will, as i didnt quite get the wiring right) have them come on with the headlights, but have a switch as well so they can be turned off easily.

Lippy 13th December 2009 00:10

lights look good bud! Im a big fan! (bit bias as I have the same but with neons)
Did you do the wiring yourself? Really getting stuck in with the new car! (RIP Badger)
Theres an illumination wire for the signal right under the speaker in the picture for turning them on! IIRC its yellow or orange and quite small, poss runs to the rear side lights but they are ideal!

yeah i did. its not finsihed as i ran out of time, and the LED strips are good, but the wirings a bit naff. very small strands, so was a pain to get connectors on them.

haha, glad you like them, thought you might.

might have to show me the wire as curently im using the illumation wire from the back of cig lighter and theres only so much i can and want to put off that.

But iv re-thought it all out on a bit of paper just now and i know what i did wrong. got the daytime to work on it tomorrow. If i have some more cable i might as well put it in for the LED's im going to place at the sides somewhere.

Still not sure where to mount my adjuster switch for the plasma dials. dont really want to cut a big hole in the panel under my steering wheel.

and yes... RIP BADGER!

on the down side...something under the car is rattling, the power steering (i think) light stays on for quite some time sometimes and more frequently the car isnt starting first time.

so all things that need to be looked into!

Mallyauto86 13th December 2009 01:37

nice car bud if i get the mk2 posi im lookin at i have pretty much same plans as you lol gotta love em and those white wheels are lush as mate =P

Lippy 13th December 2009 01:55

I have a spare battery which is mint, removed when fitted Odyssea could try that in your car for a bit! been tested and works fine and is still under warranty iirc, just not upto running my stereo etc...

Leds draw such small amounts of current you could connect 4 strings of leds to the dash illumination wires and it would be fine but im anal as you know so would use a relay to pull the power from a chunky cable :)

Check connectors on power steering pump, i think they make more noise in the winter tbh when they first start, few people have noticed that

Clean battery terminals and alt cables, check earths prob fix the probs! (FRENCH SHITE!!!)

adzvtr 13th December 2009 02:05

good progress m8, nice to see things working well now

thanks,
yeah the colour scheme works well. was always a fan of the posi blue cars even though its such a common colour!

if you like the wheels they might be up for sale soon ;)

mind need your services for that long list haha
my wiring no-how isnt anywhere near as extensive as yours so i would need to read up on how to do that first :P

quick question though, your LED's in your side vents, did you literally just run a cable to an LED with a resistor connected to it? as i was just thinking about how im going to wire in the LED's (single ones) i want in various places when they arrive?

as for the battery, i have a horrible feeling that it may be the starter motor or fuel pump. as sometimes when i turned the key theyre is a weird noise that sounds like no fuel has been pumped to the engine. But i dont know. Need to take it to the garage fairly soon as i think maybe one of the hangers has come off on the centre section or something. nothign looks damamged under there but its rattling noticeable from time to time.

That and the MDF board in the boot is really rattling! need to get me some carpet soon!

well theyre working! but still there are problems...
not as many as the badger, but still problems lol

hows your s doing?

Mallyauto86 13th December 2009 12:39

hah yeh mate i think il be painting mine tbh or looking for a set of white 1.2's

Lippy 13th December 2009 20:49

yeah I should be able to give you a hand at some point (not sure when though)

My air vent leds are exactly what you described with a 1 amp fuse there somewhere!

For rattling boot floor you just need some strips to go on top of high bits in the boot here and there but redoing the boot floor itself will solve that!

well let me know if you get a free mo! just driven to bristol and back and it was fine, but still wanna get it looked at i think.

so...

UPDATE!

look what we have here!

xmas project lol

and just 2 crappy-snaps i took out and about last night

this was after i spent a very cold afternoon cleaning it, then got the rear wheels COVERED in grit, so need to clean them again!

the one bad thing about cleaning it was i found a fair few scratches that i hadnt noticed when i bought it. still no biggy, but its annoying to find them. makes it look untidy in places.

Respray soon?

:y:

pics of the new parts need to go? or go up?

anyways, my bad luck with saxo's has continued, and this one is a major bummer really as iv only had the car a month...

Took it to the garage this morning as there was a rather worrying knocking noise that has been gettting worse as of late...the outcome is:
  • New Clutch
  • New Clutch Cable
  • New Starter Motor
  • Possibly New Gearbox (But i have the badgers old one if i do need one)

so thats nice and expensive just before xmas!

So this will significantly stem the flow of updates at the moment, so here are 2 more to put you on til the car is fixed (booked in tomorrow)

new centre console

New volt meter, plasma!

but may be getting some really snazzy guages after xmas if nothing else breaks!

Lippy 16th December 2009 10:39

dude that sucks!
I think Marc is back working on cars again now so once you have a quote give him a buzz and me and you will help him where possable!
Should be able to get done in a day!
Clutch is about £70 for a kit iirc and he just changed a gearbox for £50 for a friend of ours and when gearbox is off clutch is exposed anyway...
Might not be as expensive as you think but still a bummer!

MrHouston 16th December 2009 10:43

I got my clutch off eBay a couple months ago for £40, and was £60 labour to fit just for your info
