So I finally had the time to rip out some of the interior and sort out some things that were either annoying me or something I felt needed done.
Before ![]() After ![]() So to the interior I had a massive crack in the plastic binnacle for the odometer plus the petrol needed was missing so I had to rip the whole lot out Before ![]() During ![]() After ![]() Always felt the speakers even though I change the units to Hertz about 3 years ago, so I knew the speakers had to be bigger upfront. So I flicking through a few progress threads and decided to make a door pod. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Still got some sanding and smoothing to be done on the first unit then add some more fibreglass just don't know wither to wrap it in alcantara or try and match it to the plastic look. I will prob make my mind up on that front in the next week or so. And then to the leathers, put the rears in but the fronts won't be going in until the carpet has been taken out and given one hell of a clean. Whilst I'm doing that I will also try and spruce up the leathers as they were sitting in my garage for the best part of 8 months, see if I can get rid of the bobbling by giving it a shave. ![]() ![]() Got some Jesus grab handles to put in also but those will be a five minute job I will hopefully have the time to do tomorrow. Long Term Project... ![]() Oil catch tank, still have to trim it down to the size I want it to be. Have to find out how much it can hold right now roughly right now I think it can hold atleast 1.5L but I will be happy with 1L. Don't know which would be best either stainless wire wool or baffles inside the tank. Gonna put two fill pipes into tank and plug one off until it goes 16v as I'm pretty sure I will only need the one for the time being. Once I've found out the answers to my questions I will crack on with this as I think there is a few hours work on it max to finish it. Merge Collector Bit bored at work today so I started on a merge collector for a manifold. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As you can see with this picture I should have taken one of the lines right to the topof the pipe, but I will sort that out the next time I try this in the next few days. ![]() Still have to clean up the welds and then smooth them down but I will add some more photos when that is complete. So I've made a jig to make life a little easier ![]() ![]() Done ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Finally finished the merge
![]() ![]() ![]() This will be kept until I start to make the manifold up, won't weld until the pipe have been tacked onto the merge then it will be broken down and welded singularly then tack the merge together again with the manifold flanges. This will be kept in a jig so I don't end up with the warp that DP engineering all seem to have. Will update this tomorrow when I finish the catch tank. And with that its finally complete ![]() ![]() One oil catch tank welded up and polished complete with AN -8 fittings and a sight glass, with a baffle plate and stainless wire wool inside. It should have never take this long to do it as there is only about 2>3hrs max in making one to a high standard. Only thing missing is the bolts for locating it onto the car, but since I don't know where it will fit at this time being it can stay like this until I've ripped out the airbox and actually had a good look at the bay. |
Building An Oil Catch Tank
Started off wondering how the tank was built and what it needed inside and the designs. After a fruitless search on here trying to figure out what I needed and how to go about it. Looked about the internet for a bit and found these images and a thread which helped me a lot. ![]() ![]() So going to the drawing board on now I had already started the main body by using 83mm OD stainless pipe (could've made it out of aluminium but I really couldn't be arsed folding metal), Using 9mm stainless pipe and a set of pipe benders I formed two 90 degree bends. Drilled out two holes at 10.2mm inserted the formed pipe and then welded it which would then form the "sight glass". I then cut the pipes to size and used some clear plastic pipe and crimped it. ![]() Inside Shot ![]() As I didn't know how I was going about this I didn't weld the bloody baffle plate in place... First mistake made on making this and will be remembered when I will be making more. ![]() Next step was thinking about how this would be getting filled up BSP fittings was the first idea and then started seeing a lot of AN fittings. So because the AN made the bay look a who lot cleaner. ![]() Welded two AN -8 stainless fittings to the top of the tank ![]() And welded one to the base of the tank but also incorporated a fine mesh at the base to act like a filter (just because the oil that ends up in there will be going back into the engine) ![]() ![]() Filled the tank with some stainless wire wool (could use copper but steel wool is a defo no-no) ![]() Welded the base on and the tank is complete... ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyone who is building a tank themselves I'm more than happy to pass on help of any sort (the AN fittings and stainless wire wool where bought from eBay and the rest of the material I was able to use from my work). |
