taking the engine out to make it lighter wont make it go quicker

Alanapone 31st December 2013 19:33

Ah, I see you're following my theme of; use the car once, strip it all down and mess with it some more!!

Hahaha good one... It needs to come out to allow other things to happen to help it go quicker :D

The car is off on it's holidays today...

Last night in my unit

Subscribing to this.

looking very interesting!

Aly 8th January 2014 17:40

Awesome work Josh should hopefully make it more reliable.
Also to add to the N/A vs boost debate I know it's only a bit of fun anyway but you don't need mega power on track, a well setup car with a good driver will compete with just about anything.

Take for instance this video, This is Dan from AK Automotive, one of the best Mx5 tuners in the country. Tim the driver in this video is driving his Mx5 turbo not sure on exact power but it's over 200bhp.
Dan is in his N/A tuned race car and just look how much faster he is through the sweeping bends as he is able to maintain momentum better.
Not saying boost is wrong sometimes it can be a cheap alternative to getting to the power figures you want (if you were after a low boost setup) but the N/A car will be a lot better to drive.

hard_corejoeboy 8th January 2014 18:26

I do love n/a power but there is something addictive about having the turbo on tap at the ready and just going booooooosh!

greyjasper51 8th January 2014 18:55

another n/a vs boost video

it just goes to show how a half decent driver can pilot something that probably has half the power and not quite half the weight as fast as something that has a lot more power and in theory better handling (4wd)...

iowracer 8th January 2014 18:59

The driver is everything tbh but a car with no power will loose if it can't keep up

Martijn_M 8th January 2014 20:55

It's not only power... It's also weight/tyres/suspension.
It's logical a stock STI "loses" to a cammed/stripped VTS.

Alanapone 8th January 2014 21:24

That vid is good but it shows a guy who obviously knows the track and his car really well. The other drivers could be new to the track or car or both so your bound to piss on them. That said, i'm not arguing against the points being made, i just wanted to highlight this as another variable in the whole "look at me blasting bigger cars on a track" situation.

Good videos though... Need to get back on the track soon!

Cannot wait to try mine on track martin, didn't you say you have a few mates over in holland with mx5's you looking forward to the ring? Ive got a couple track days booked already this year

Thing is though that saxo on the straights isn't far off speed wise to scoobie, not knocking your point at all but the power to weight of both are probably quite close..

Like when my cousin went to croft with his girlfriend in his evo 5, she was getting done by civics, clio sports etc. As she was new to track. My cousin was then obviously knocking spots off them and they couldn't get close.

A good driver makes the world of difference, that's proven eith the tranny van round the nurburgring by that crazy german chick... clarkson was struggling in a much more powerful jag.

saxo66 8th January 2014 23:06

very nice car :y:

greyjasper51 8th January 2014 23:14

Just proves my point of a half decent driver

Yeah soms guys i know drive MX5's. Not sure if they might go to the Ring though.

jpsaxo 9th January 2014 09:26

Good discussion lads :)

The ring exaggerates a good driver vs average driver IMO

hard_corejoeboy 9th January 2014 10:42

The ring exaggerates EVERYTHING scares the living bejesus out of me! Especially going 120mph down foxhole with a pack of 911's and Megane's sat on your back bumper with a left hander coming up LOL

So JP share the love? Why's the engine out?

jpsaxo 9th January 2014 22:00

I was doing 130+ in Alex's gti down the foxhole last year... Love that section!

You'll have to wait and see. Here's a teaser for now...

Martijn_M 9th January 2014 23:18

Foxhole makes my stomach go funky. Love it.

Have to admit i almost shit myself there on one of my first paxlaps. (in a 350bhp caged/stripped/semi'd/prepped Impreza)

Agreed Martin, it flows so nicely, and then the compression at the bottom of the hill + the mentally quick left hander at the top of the hill before the right hander before Adenau Forst - EPIC!

Hopefully we will get the chance to take you out on a pax lap in the mango this summer :panic::panic::A:

hard_corejoeboy 10th January 2014 11:44

All the downhill sections scare me to be honest as you don't quite realise how fast you are going and then its the opposite on the uphill one's as you don't realise how fast you can go. Really want to get there again soon! Maybe next year with you guys would be good. Some pax laps would be a help as done around 10 in various cars over various days/conditions so never had a good flowing lap as of yet. Must be shite scary in a mentally fast little tin can too aye JP ;)

A scooby also costs alot more in parts to repair / replace. My coilvers were £500 and that is a cheap set. Then there is the brakeing, a scooby is heavier so is going to take a bit more to stop. I would not think twice about throwing my old saxo around the roads, yet i dont keep up with corsa's on the back roads in my scooby....untill i get on the straights :)

matt_vtr_15a 10th January 2014 11:53

Lovely car JP it really is a credit to you.

In the debate....

A driver in a boosted car that knows what there doing, with less power, less weight than other evo's and runs a much quicker lap than bigger powered evo's.

Really does solely depend on the driver, if you kept switching the drivers between boosted and N/A it would be interesting to see the time differences etc.

This guy knows the ring, not massive power but it's in the right hands... the drivetrain has been upgraded by the sounds of it though...

Alanapone 10th January 2014 16:53

Why has he got a squeaky toy under his clutch pedal??

Certainly is.... but the old tin can's do suprise an alarmingly high amount of so called better cars :y::A:
