Can I just start with a quick "Fuck you Dave". :y:

I was about to post a new estates thread but Dave and his harem of lardy ladies pointed out there was already one.

So, here's what I was going to post.

I currently have a hankering for something estatey. I don't really know why, but they're just sort of fapping cool. Preferably fast, but not obviously so.

Anyhow, this got me thinking about various sorts of sweet estates, so here's some of my favourites.

Volvo 240 GLT's are cool as fuck:

So are 740's, but not as much:

Obviously there's the 850 T5R:

The C5 RS6 is cool on an interplanetary scale, it's just off the chart awesome:

The E39 540i Touring is a great looking car as well:

I also really quite like the Legacy GTB Wagon:

C63 Wagon is immense:

But the E63 is moar betterer:

You'd have to be a bender to get one of these like:

Best not to say too much more about Japan, I know they built the Stagea and the Evo wagons, but they're pretty fucking ugly.

The Audi RS2 is pretty legendary:

Mind I was never really sold on the light bar running across the back of the boot plinth.

Out of the 4's, the B5 RS4 is my favourite, it's just the right amount of 'normal' so it doesn't really stand out:

When my 306 explodes it's coming to the end of it's days I think I'm going to replace it with one of these fine barges, I'm doing a lot of building work at the moment and the tip seems to be a second home.

It's got roof rails, extra win!

Do you realise if you'd turned the phone on it's side we could have seen all of it, or are you waiting for the ends to be delivered? :homme:

For the super observant, you would have noticed that the pillars at either side of the drive were obscuring the view anyway, so I didn't deem a landscape shot necessary!

Volvo V50 T5 R-Design.

Blue or red. Same engine as the focus st and rs so plenty of mods around for it, 225 as standard I think? Just get an lsd for it!

Surely being related to a focus is a reason not to get a car?

[smug mode] I has just got myself one of these in dark green. Hdi and meridian spec as well. Pulls like a train and handles well. Will be even better when I've got a xsara vts back axle on it (current one is creaking a little). [/smug mode]

Yes, takes forever to get upto speed, the brakes are rubbish and it runs on coal.

£775 in the end. Had a reasonable amount of mot and a few months tax left on it.

Actually, unloaded locos get up to speed surprisingly quickly ;-), especially when you go WOT on a 3000 odd hp diesel!

My estate will be getting a remap at some point which should take it straight up to around 120. Add an intercooler and sort the pump and it's 150+. I fitted a towbar and towed a caravan chassis behind it, barely noticed the extra weight. Pug rate the estate to tow 1200kg braked!

That doesn't count ;) as it's only turning a Generator, the batteries power AC motors - which means maximum torque from 0 speed.

That system in a car would make it rapid off the mark as well.

Like all electric cars ???

Oli-VTR 4th May 2014 19:13

Going to be getting a skoda octavia vrs estate in a few months. Means I can carry myself and all the massive amount of kit I have around as I'll be moving alot, and can tow the saxo and so have that off the road just as a toy. Think they look good and aggressive, comfy things and good value for cash. What a boring cunt I'm becoming..

Chr15 4th May 2014 20:48

An aggressive VAG. Really?

No.

engine > generator > batteries > motor > wheels. Is what I mean.

All electric cars are just battery > motor > wheels

Hybrids are Engine > gearbox > Wheels & motor assist

I was on about torque, I may make electric cars, maybe, a bit, ish.

the leaf is 100% electric and has a gearbox btw

That's cos the leaf has so little power, I'd imagine. Unless you're being picky, in which case a 2:1 reduction gear is technically a gearbox.

I don't get why the can't just make them direct drive, it's less loss.

I was meaning a setup like a train in a car. :y:

Dat torque doe

Shit aye, just looked up the spec. an 80KW motor hahahaha xD

Single speed reduction gear of almost 8:1 :)

It's a Volvo engine which the focus uses, so all good!

:fcuk:

Not normally any batteries involved in locos. Some locos are D.C. traction motors as well. Hi/lo gearing is achieved by switching the motors from series to parallel wiring, and/or switching the two motor windings from series to parallel (or field weakening), although this does depend on the motor type.

Main reason that electric cars aren't normally direct drive is the motor flexibility required. In general you can build an electric motor to make loads of torque, or loads of revs, but it's very difficult (expensive) to do both. Also, a motor that could shift a fully loaded car from standstill as direct drive would be very heavy and suck down a shed load of amps on startup.

Much bigger motors out there. ;-). The fact that most motors can absorb up to 5x their rated power for short periods and it makes you realise the potential for electric drive trains.
