Woolworths

What are your thoughts on what is/has happened to woolies.

Cant believe they are going into administration tbh. 99years they have been around thats a damn long time. Used to love going in there for sweeties and all sorts of things.

The government are trying all these things to help boost spending etc to try and get the economy on recovery but soon enough if people dont start spending they wont be any shops for people to buy. Its insane, especially as you think 30,000 more people will be made unemployed when they go, so surely the government should be helping them stay afloat as more unemployed people isnt really helping the economy as people are not going to be spending.

All this madness at xmas as well. :(

woolworths, never been good in peterlee, its ok in hartlepool imo, but never bought anything from there, hmmm, maybe its crap shop ??

stompin-sarah 26th November 2008 23:22

its crazy if you ask me. uk is totally fuked at the mo though and probably will be for a few more years yet

VTRacer 26th November 2008 23:23

kinda shit how everyone is just crumbling, used to love woolworths :(

Barry123 26th November 2008 23:23

fuked up!!!

jonc 26th November 2008 23:23

Been along time comming tbh. Theres always a shop with better selection and cheaper prices really. e.g. Games and Dvd's HMV ect wins. Also they have lost alot of money with the internet out sites like Play and Amazon taking a huge market share. WHS Smith can't be far off!.

mattchewone 26th November 2008 23:23

The one in Crawley is pretty good but i dont shop in town very often tbh.

Just not really going to be helping the economy with all these extra people unemployed on top of all the already unemployed.

Craddock 26th November 2008 23:24

I used to nick sweets without paying when I was young. I wasn't a thug, I just didn't know you had to pay. I think it's people like me that putting them in a situation like this.

mattchewone 26th November 2008 23:25

Cant see why they needed to borrow 385million earlier this year? Just madness tbh.

I blame the directers tbh its been fine for nearly 100years then it just goes into thin air.

Mr_X 26th November 2008 23:25

we need to stop spending, so the gov (imo) shouldn't encourage it. woolworths has got shite recently anyway, full of cheap crap. anyhoo theyre in £300+ million in debt.

The last thing i want is tax payers money being used to help save it.

Prickle 26th November 2008 23:26

tbh i prefer asda ftw

JC-Furio 26th November 2008 23:28

I'm just going to masturbate till the economy sorts itself out.

d4r3n 26th November 2008 23:28

everything is going tits up at the min, the motor trade is unreal hardly no sales, no one wants to buy so everythings going to have to mess up to get back on track kinda thing

Why?

If they dont get saved and that amount of people get made unemployed its going to cause even more madness for everyone as the government will be paying even more JSA and there will be people loosing there homes etc etc.

craig180 26th November 2008 23:30

They have been going down the pan for about 7-8 years. It was only a matter of time

theyre uncompetitive and shit. why throw way money, when its inevitable?

+ we are running a HUGE deficit

Lol i'd rather the gov kept the 300mill or whatever the amount is. since this is only the beginning of the recession wait in 2years time when maybe banks will need that money like Northern Rock did not a stupid shop like Woolworths.

Mr_Willy 26th November 2008 23:34

JJB have gone bankrupt aswell, another big retailer down the pan ... : /

30,000 people will find a job just like that. How comes there are plus of 1million unemployed? Companies are not employing people as they are cutting costs.

Are you saying you have never shopped in woolworths? Why are people only considering about loosing the shop? Its the poeple working there and the state the economy is in. This is going to make it even worst tbh.

They need to help them out tbh or the economy isnt going to get better, not that saving them will make it instantly better.

Not really but there will be even less when that more amount of people start claiming JSA. More tax money either way we will be paying for this out of our pockets.

So keeping them although will take a huge amount of money will help in the long run of things considering the amount of people they employ.
As you also have to consider warehouse staff, lorry drivers etc etc.

Mattt-VTR 26th November 2008 23:42

Coudln't believe when my MUM told me lol, i was like nah!

kool_tg 26th November 2008 23:43

A new JJB shop has not long been built in Crawley aswell

ok, so say they are bailed out (more borrowing) then because they arent competitive in a years time they head for the pan again. so borrow even more? sound familiar?

the one near the mall?

Dez 26th November 2008 23:47

In all fairness Woolworths have been shit for years, since the bigger supermarkets started selling toys, games and cds woolworths knew they were fuck*d.

What gets me is that these fat cats that are paid loads should of realised this earlier, but oh well.

kool_tg 26th November 2008 23:49

I live in Tilgate. you? I would say woolworths in Crawley has to be the bigest store they have. Also the block of shops MnS, Sainsburys, Bingo are getting knocked down in 2010-11 and have need told that Sainsbury's is going into County Mall

in place of what debenhams? or something

kool_tg 26th November 2008 23:52

I have no idea. just that its going into the county mall

Mr_X 26th November 2008 23:54

the mall is good, altho not over keen on the food court.

woolies is always a mess, staff are unhelpfull, it is a shame, but only have themselves to blame.

Ruka 27th November 2008 00:19

I know someone who was offered a promotion at Woolworths a couple of weeks ago, don't dare ask him if he took it now

wobble_vtr 27th November 2008 00:31

its been on the cards for years, they were like the first shop to sell everything then they got competition from specific selling shops (hmv, toy shops etc) they couldve got out before they built a sh*tload of debt

still going to get a whopper of a pic n' mix before they close though lol

Hey Ho, didnt say 'if' they get bailed out they should run as they are lol. That would be pretty stupid lol.

I think the directors would need to be looked at, on how they are going to turn around the business to be fair. They need to re-think what there key market is and on there products they need to be more competitive on price and value etc.

I think as they have been struggling etc thats why there competitive edge etc has dropped and since they brought in that really shite catalogue idea. Lets fac it they are not argos so why try and act like them, just a waste of time and money.

joemcevoy 27th November 2008 11:46

There is a bran new JJB gym and shop not even opened yet near where i live. I think its due to open in January. Wonder if that will still happen. If woolworths is making no money then there is no point in bailing them out to be borrowing more money a couple of months later.

IMO the banks should be hit harder than they have been. They have been bailed out and they didnt even pass the interest rate on to us. They dont get a bonus for a year is it? That takes the biscuit, they should be getting pay cuts no bonus for a couple of years and sent to gay camp to be shafted for the current economic position we are left in. Understand its not just the banks but is it just me who has no faith in this government to do anything at all?

Amiee 27th November 2008 11:53

always used to be in woolies after school getting sweets, always brought me cds/dvds ect from there too.. be a shame if they did go as you say, they have been round a long long time.

Peejous 27th November 2008 11:56

Quite like these shops going bankrupt etc... all these new places to go urban exploring lol
