Whats the most miles you've had from a saxo gearbox?

As the title says? My saxos just hit 100k and its still on the original box :S
Is this a normal thing with saxos/106's?

Furio-92 25th December 2011 01:57

Mines on 118K, origional box

SNewham 25th December 2011 02:01

Mine blew up at 28k but it wasn't really the gearbox's fault. My driveshaft broke in half and went through it...

LSOfreak 25th December 2011 02:03

lol! hate it when that happens

CrouchyM 25th December 2011 03:02

Mines on the original box at 93k...

...probably why it's fucked and the syncro's on 2nd, 3rd and 5th are shot.

danny-vts 25th December 2011 04:07

before i stripped my vts, gearbox was on 127k
the box was fine, it was the fucking engine which was the disaster lol

AlexB 25th December 2011 09:08

my old gti was on 137k whem i took the box off it for an xsi
Sold the gti box on it was still working perfectly

If you arent an animal with shifting and just slot it in they will last quite a while

LSOfreak 25th December 2011 13:11

ah ok so its not that ununusual then for a high mileage french box. I always see people having problems when it gets upto ~80k

joe333 25th December 2011 14:34

Sorry to hi jack

Just wonder is i got S2 box and it on about 97k so i was thinking of getting it rebuilt!

Is it a DIY job or would you take it to a specialist job?
and what's involved with a basic rebuilt

wicked-vtr 25th December 2011 15:53

I rebuilt the xsi box that's in my car now joe, it was a bit of a pain in the arse but not a total nightmare. There's a guide on here for premiums

yeah how long did it take? and how much was all the parts?

wicked-vtr 25th December 2011 16:38

Took a while as I got pissed off and gave up. was like £150 in parts i think, you need a few special tools but you can just use mine.

Thanks mate not that pricey then!

do you think 2 of us could do it in a weekend?

How much do you think it would cost to get it done in a shop??

wicked-vtr 25th December 2011 17:27

Erm probably yeah if there was no fuck ups. Couldn't see a specialist will charge massively more tbh, get a few quotes. That way you would get a warranty on it as well

wicked-vtr 25th December 2011 17:45

I haven't got a clue mate sorry

Tom5190 25th December 2011 18:10

Bondi 26th December 2011 00:02

97000 original box

works a dream

chinkostu 28th December 2011 09:08

had 127k on my 1.1 on the original box. whirred like a bastard :-/

think the vtr went about 100k before jaytee changed the box, and that one lasted less than 30k :-/

rick_VTR 28th December 2011 09:49

i changed the originaly box on my vtr at 99K only because a driveshaft popped out and when i put a new one on, forgot to top the gearbox oil up so basically ran dry from mid wales to london and back :S

and i put one on that had 75k and the car is noq on 116K and its whining abit, and is hard to select 1st + 2nd, but my linkages dont make it any easier tbh so guna change them first.

LSOfreak 28th December 2011 17:04

my original box is at 100k, still works fine, sometimes isnt that smooth into 1st 2nd and 3rd and whines a bit in 3rd. Still perfectly useable though :)

BenM508 28th December 2011 17:09

My box is what I believe to be the original and my car is at 126K, has started making noises though, sounds like a food blender when you accelerate, mechanic says its the diff, so ill need to replace it soonish, that and the driveshafts! Gearstick doesn't even feel connected anymore, so actually, ill be needing new linkages too!

:)

skidzVTR 28th December 2011 17:11

mines 105k . got a oil leak on g-box but works fine . That reminds me have to top it up .lol

BenM508 28th December 2011 17:19

I don't even know how to change my gearbox oil lol, and I don't have any idea when it was done last, any way of telling the level of oil? Or a direction to a guide on how to do it? Thanks

LSOfreak 28th December 2011 19:09

theres a way to check the level but im not too sure.
An easy way to fill it though, alternative from the original fill up point, is if you remove the air intake pipe, there is a small breather on the top of the gearbox with a plastic cap on it

easy way to overfill it...

the filler and drain plugs are at the passenger side of the gearbox, behind the splashguard(?). mine doesn't have any so its a 20 second job if i fight around the wheel :y:

LSOfreak 29th December 2011 16:21

yeah you can overfill it easily, id only use that method if i knew exactly how much to chuck in

0rang3peel 29th December 2011 17:04

I've had 3 saxo's never had one gearbox failure on any of them, seems to be one of the decent bits to be honest.

this saxo's on 103k :)

BenM508 29th December 2011 17:25

To be fair, there isn't really a reason why it should go wrong if it is looked after and maintained correctly, which mine, and a lot of ours, clearly haven't lol

kmak577 29th December 2011 18:42

mines on 132,000 its a bit stiff to get into first down from 2nd, but that might be the linkages? Slight high jack there :P
